This tip made my mixes sound substantially better. I was always guessing the channel volumes, and when it came time to master with a limiter, I struggled with volume maximization due to clipping. Thanks for the great tip!

it is funny I have known this technique for over a decade.. but for whatever reason (probably my own pride) I have ignored using it as a quick and dirty way to get my mix under control early on.. Today I went back to 3 tracks in the works and within 5 minutes I had substantially better sounding mixes. One quick tip i would add to this is to take the more prominent bus channels and put a Dynamic range meter on them so you can assure you are mixing to range that is suitable to your style. In my house music tracks this usually is a 12dB range for my bass, drums and leads. Cheers for reminding me of this great little "trick"!!

Does setting the levels in mono help?

Yes, you should be in Mono. Stereo tricks the ears and mono is a more sure way to get accurate levels

in that case, when the sound is at it's loudest, assuming it's the volume you have automated, that's when you would compare it to the noise

This should be used as very first step in mixing to get a static mix with volume and panning only. Try to use automation afterwards. Pink noise is really wonderful to get balance in the mix :)

What was the level of pink noise?

it doesn't matter too much, maybe around -9dB. What matters is that it helps you set the levels in relation to each other, and then you can turn them all up or down later while keeping that relationship.
