This method really won't clean the back side of the throttle body which is where the sticking of the throttle plate occurs. Secondly drilling holes in the intake hoses and taping them will encourage a vacuum leak in the future.

i am no mechanic but putting holes in a truck doesn't sound like a good idea, it just as easy to take the parts off and do it right, i do mine once a year and takes 15 min to do

Interesting approach, I generally just move the intake tube over to the side and use a blue shop towel with the throttle body cleaner to scrub off the carbon with the vehicle turned off. Keeps nearly all of the contaminants on the disposable rag, only takes a minute or two, and keeps the intake tube intact instead of trusting a tiny screw to stay in place. although it only makes a small hole, if that screw falls out your intake will suck air through it at a much higher velocity than it will from the rest of the system as in doesn't have "flow restrictions" such as the filter and MAF sensor. An intake will always draw air from the source with the least resistance at a much higher rate, and that high velocity air coming in will be from the top of the engine bay away from the edges of the hood where it stands a chance to suck in fresh, cool air. Heat rises so the middle top of the engine bay would theoretically be the hottest point in the bay meaning the air coming in at a high velocity from that hole will be as hot as possible, be unfiltered and very likely filled with contaminants such as dirt. Basically if that screw ever falls out than you could end up suffering very minor performance losses with potentially medium engine damage as dirt will be free to travel into the combustion chamber. Maybe try gaff or gorilla tape, taking an extra 30 seconds to clean it with a shop rag by hand, or just avoid the build up on the throttle body by installing a $12 breather filter or spending $20 on an oil catch can? the PCV valve is what causes the build up in the first place. I honestly respect your ingenuity and think that your video was very well put together. I don't mean any disrespect towards you with this comment, just adding what I know from experience.

Screw will never fall out. The hole is very small. Some engines will not run when you unhook the air cleaner. Running the motor will help the get the gump out in the intake a "rag" can't reach also. Thanks for you comment!

but the engine doesn't need to be running in order for you to clean the throttle body. just do it by hand with the engine off, it doesn't ruin oem parts, takes a comparable amount of time, and does an all around better job at cleaning the throttle body ;)

Jeff Knaack ....But trying to spray in to the intake or cleaning where a rag won't reach is not an advantage? Inside the intake is where 70% of sludge hides. Try getting a rage in them passageways!. ..But I get your point. I often to extra distance ...to achieve maximum results. Spraying will clean out inside the intake some if you can keep it runing.

i dont know bro i think this is a pretty good idea. i gust read about a guy doing it your way & he ruined the throttle body sensor cost him 180.00 bucks. its only a freaking truck. usually when you have to do this am pretty sure you have over 100,000 miles my truck has over 350,000 & still ticking witch im about to clean the throttle body this way cause i cant see me buying 180.00 bucks for a new throttle body. but i can tell you i would not do this to my family car.

That's the equivalent of the one stupid kid that everyone laughed at in high school for jamming a paper clip in the electrical outlet. 1. Warm up engine. 2. Remove air box and duct.3.spray into throttle, and open throttle spraying the underside of throttle plate 4. Take a clean rag or paper towel and wipe.. let the car sit for 30 min.to let excess cleaner evaporate..start the car... No need to rev the engine.just let it idle.more the likely when you first start the engine it may run a little rough. No big deal.:) . .

This did a great job in cleaning the intake manifold valves in my 2008 Jeep Patriot 2.4l engine. I didn't create a hole in the manifold. I just disconnected the air filter and sprayed past the air mass sensor. Worked great! Thanks for sharing.

I would like to see how clean the throttle body is on the down stream side of the butterfly , you didn't show that . I can clean the front of the TB and both sides of the butterfly with engine off,using a tooth brush and some TBI cleaner. Then start it up, open the throttle a little giving it a shoot or two of mouth wash. The tooth brush will reach way down stream and get that too .

A couple questions for the people worried about where the "crud" goes. Where do you think it came from? Where do you think it would have went if it didn't stick to the throttle body? Do you think that the "crud" that is stuck to the throttle body is 100 % of the "crud" that entered the throttle body?

For fuck's sake, this way all the gunk will be sucked in to the engine. Not to mention ruining the feul injection. Please do not do this to your car. Take the air flow hoss off, its just a couple of clamps, and then clean the throttle body with, carborator /throttle body cleaner.

You cannot use non-conducting cleaner on the MAF sensor MAF sensor is a special sensor special cleaner in the cleaners made so that when you spray the sensor the cleaner has no residue at all Left Behind where some of these other cleaners will leave behind some residue or some lubrication because that's what their call for be very careful with some of these sensors expensive to fix

Low Idle, sometimes stalling. But this is not a always a cure as there are other sensors that tell the EMC how to run the engine. But having said that, its always a good place to start. And anyone can do this 'first step" in acquiring a issue of a poor idling stalling auto. Happy fixing!

Throttle body cleaner for throttle body. Or you can use the SeaFoam spray and follow the instructions. Works the same way.

Mechanics take the cover off the throttle body and spray right into the throttle body. People think mechanics shops and stealerships take everything apart spend and hour or two cleaning and wipe it with clean clothes so the crap don't go in the throttle body. Big repair bills make people think he worked his butt off. HA

i'm not a rocket scientist but how would this get into your oil and require two oil changes? it's going into the combustion and out the exhaust. As for whether it cleans the other half of the TB, my question is why do half the job? And secondly, why poke a hole in anything at all? another way for moisture to get where it doesn't belong. and lastly if your system is so fragile that you cant open the hose or port then that part is bad already ... right?

that stuff just breaks up the carbon build up.... it does not disolve it. You basically just added a whole bunch of gunk to your engine oil. you should NOT do this!!!. I would do an oil change and run it about 50 miles and do another oil change to try to get the carbon out you just dumped in there and keep it from building up inside the engine!! This is a HORRIBLE idea!!! I am by no means a mechanic, it took me a half a day to watch a couple videos and take my throttle body off and cleaned it. not to mention there is a lot of carbon on the back side of that comes from the IAC valve ports.

True....But its such a Miniscule amount. 2/3 will get blown through the exhaust. We are talking just a few ounce's. It's not like you dumping a quart into the motor oil. Hell I bet the oil in most engines that need intake's and Throttle body's cleaning really bad....all ready have horrible oil in them... and need a oil change. Been doing this for 40 years....never a Issue...So Its not all doom and gloom ;)

yes you are by no means a mechanic.Most of the fluid will burn up. a small reside in your oil. so if this concerns you , do the throttle body cleaning before an oil change.

Too much people leaves the throttle body without any cleaning. Sadly, because it's a trivial job to do on most cars. Just done it on mine, by removing the throttle body from the intake and replacing its two gaskets. Now the plate is shiny and the little 1.2 has a faster response and a clockwork idle. No calibration problems at all.

Why not just clean the throttle body out by hand with a rag? Much more efficient and effective... Also your not sucking chemicals into your engine doing who knows what. You just wasted that whole bottle and only cleaned the outside of the butterfly.. I absolutely do not recommend doing this because you could potentially lock up your engine or maybe even set it on fire lol. Anything going past is just being sucked up and not thoroughly cleaning around the edges and walls, which is what's important. I recommend using a screw driver to prop open the butterfly, while using throttle body or MAF sensor cleaner the proper way and use a rag because the spray alone won't remove the deposits. Doing this will actually make a noticable difference. Just did it in my '99 expedition 5.4 liter engine and it brought it back to life! It was choking.

Rumor has it, he still cant figure out why he's getting a lean code on both banks :) Just remove your throttle body and use a toothbrush with the cleaner folks. Good time to clean the MAF as well. Only use that CRC stuff he showed. It will be done right and look brand new.

Fuel doesnt touch the throttle body unfortunately. Tank additives only clean where fuel goes so your fuel line, filter, injectors, top of pistons and intake valves. Lucas fuel additive is best, it lubricrates the upper cylinder as well
