I always reuse charcoal. No sense in wasting a fuel source. Many years past I doused lit charcoal with water to put out the fire and then tossed it all out. But when I got my WSM, I learned about shutting off the air source and snuffing out the lit coals. Ash separation is easy and with the help of another of Chris’s videos showing how to fashion a flexible scoop from an old plastic vinegar bottle, cleanup is a breeze. That same scoop used to get old water out if the water pan is also great! I learn something new from this channel very often and for the money, the WSM cannot be beat.

Like others, I leave the left over coals in the bottom of the WSM for next time and just cover with new coals. Tying the charcoal ring to the coal grate (using aluminum wire) with a secondary smaller grate inside turned 90 deg (thanks you tube) really saves the charcoal and makes it easy to get the ash out.

Reuse always, I relight like you do Chris , line chimney with new than dump used over top nice relight every time. Spread more used over top of lit charcoal after dumping if needed. Cook on 👍🏼

I reuse, generally just keep the leftovers in the cooker, which I store in my garage after a good 48 hour cool-down. Then I separate the ash out, but leave the used coals in the cooker unless it's going to be a really long time until the next cook. Most of my cooks are "minion" method, so I add as many new briquettes as it takes to completely fill the charcoal ring along with my smoke wood (under the coals), and then I remove 12-15 brand new briquettes from the center to use in the chimney as starter coals. No problems yet.

I use my leftover charcoal from my Weber Smoky Mountain the next time I grill on my Weber Kettle. I put the used charcoal in first and then add 10 or 12 new briquettes on top.

I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or if I just had a different thought process. I will put the used charcoal at the bottom of the chimney and use them to light the new charcoal. I figured the used charcoal is close to burnt up anyway so let it finish burning up to get the new batch going. I've never had a problem with them clumping.

I always save any leftover charcoal from my Weber Smokey Mountain to be used later in my Weber Go Anywhere Grill or my Kettle Grill

I don't find there's much heat remaining in the leftover briquettes. I don't bother saving them and if any are left on the the grate then they usually end up in the metal ash bucket

I'm lazy. Like some others have already commented, I just leave the old charcoal in the ring & pour new on top. Is there some reason this might be a bad idea?

I guess it depends on the conditions where you live. It's important to keep charcoal dry, and leaving it in the cooker potentially exposes it to humidity, rain, etc. But if it's working for you, don't stop doing what you're doing!

I reuse mines, after they are relit I pour them over the unlit coals. No waste of product

You bet I use left over charcoal, and prime 6. Place one layer of new charcoal in the chimney. Pour used charcoal on top of the layer. Top off with new charcoal.

I always reuse leftovers. I clean out the grill or smoker each time and put the leftovers in a plastic bag like you do.

It's against the law in some states if you don't reuse your leftover charcoal

Which state(s)? I'd like to learn more about this.
