So FINALLY had some non-rainy weather so I started to rasp with my 1/2 cm thick round rasp tool against some 1cm - 2cm thick bamboo sticks to create fishmouth joints but bloody hell it's a lot of work just for one! Managed to get 2 done (4 joints: 1 on each end of 2 pieces of bamboo). The Rotary tool I bought isn't sufficient for this as the bamboo is so damn tough it causes friction smoke as well as the sandpaper getting shredded after just 30 seconds. Perhaps I was pushing down too hard though. Will try again today as weather looks good.

I'm trying to make a hole bigger outside of my house for a wired doorbell without damaging the doorbell wires, can these types of tools do a workaround to make the hole bigger? Also, I don't want to push the wiring inside the wall just so they'll get dropped or lost inside the wall. If not, what tool would you recommend? New homeowner here. Much appreciated Sir.

Trying to look for wood rasps small enough to create fish joints on my bamboo sticks. Not sure if I should just manually carve them or use a Rasp tool but nonetheless still very good tips. Ty mate

will these rasps work with really hard wood like rosewood? thanks!

Hi Mike, yes, you can use rasps with any timber, including super-hard woods. In fact, the softer the timber, the more challenging rasp work can be, as the wood tears and 'fluffs' and makes accuracy a challenge. Whereas, hard woods tend to leave a cleaner face when rasped.

Have a great Xmas, one of the tools I fear is my set of (inherited) rasps and riffles. I might give then a clean and an honest try. $0.02
