this is life changing video for me!! Trumpet playing is not deep breathing, trumpet playing is just sighing. I made a beautiful high high G outside the staff today :D instead of being stuck normally with a high G. Just sighing, and no tension

Great video Paul. You taught me back at SWCHS between 1999-2003... I've barely played since then but recently dusted off my horn. Was amazed how much of the muscle memory remains - I can play a scale (and played a serviceable Last Post before I could oil the seized valves...) but can't remember what notes are which. Chops killing me after 2 minutes. I googled 'trumpet warm-up' and there you were, looking not a day older.

Hi Paul ~ Happy New Year! Want to thank you for all the really great information you have been providing to trumpet players worldwide! I was wondering if you could do a series on just lip buzzing and mouthpiece buzzing one of these days. I have been playing for 30 years, but recently have lost a lot of control on my embouchure. I am assuming my teeth placements have changed, but I having a hell of time trying to gain embouchure support on just one side, since I am playing mostly to the right. Almost to the point, it looks like there is no lips showing on my right side when I play. Rather than a natural buzz, it feels like I am using pressure to close one side of the lips to make a buzz. Though, I have been trying to correct this, I have not found a methodical way to correct my problems. Would be great if you can get to the raw mechanics of lip buzzing and mouthpiece buzzing when you have the time. Also, do you do private lessons? Thank You ~ !

hi paul, i practiced dropping the pitch until the magnet takes my lips, and it perfectly works, it feels like my lips are sucked into the mouthpiece and get a very good massage there. but now sometimes this happens already on the normal low c, my lips get caught, get a massage, and the c no longer sounds like a c. :-) i am sure you know this problem. is there something i can do, when this happens? i have the feeling it can occur at any time. but maybe it is because my lips are getting tired? thank you for your answer! all the best, gerd

Hello Paul. Love your approach. I've been working on a method that involves using a didgeridoo to promote relaxed playing. Similar and different at the same time. Any thoughts?

Hi George I think that's a great idea. I had a conservatoire student who experimented with this once too. I occasionally use a trombone which makes a similar noise when I play it!!!

what would your recommendation be for relaxing the upper register and removing the tension?
@krakenjm6877

As a trumpet player coming up on 10 years, don’t press your mouthpiece back into your face, use more air force rather than “more air”. Sure it’s important, but it will come as you need it, air support is a good portion of what you need. Also look up “Caruso Magic 6 Notes” I have used it since day 10~ on recommendation from instructor and it helped a lot.

What about blowing the mouthpiece until it gets warm enough so you don’t get an airy sound? Are there any cons in doing that? Great video btw. Cheers!

What's the real point of Warm-Up? lip or breathing, or throat, or to remember, how did you play yesterday? what do you think? (Sorry for my English)

nabuckofly blood flow? I know whenever I just start cold I suffer later but when I have patience to play even a few of those low chromatic scales from the first Clark book exercise, I often feel more relaxed and smoother between large intervals, like it’s easier to target the center of pitch

Christina put it beautifully. It's about preparing your body to play. It's not about playing. A relaxed lip will function more efficiently which will give you better endurance. It's about finding and locking in to the sensations of good technique. Of course many players feel like they can play higher without warming up but that's because the lip has more tension and is tighter at first. Warming up isn't for everyone but I highly recommend is and personally wouldn't play without! Paul

Thank you for your very useful tip for playing trumpet. I have one question. I play with different buzzing point on each note(high or low). How can I find my sweet spot? I’d like to play with consistently tone.
@TrumpetTakeaway
@TrumpetTakeaway 5 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for your question. That's a difficult one to solve without seeing you play but try experimenting with mouthpiece placement. Try placing it a little higher/lower/left/right. Have you tried a different size mouthpiece? Just don't be afraid to experiment!

Should you try to get the proper pedal pitch, or let the instrument take you to whatever pitch it resonates at, my 'pedal c' / fundamental is a few steps lower than pedal c, I can make the actual pedal C pitch but it requires some effort.
