I go to an old school Italian barber once in a while. When I lay backwards with a wet towel over my eyes and hear the guy sharpening the blade a pray God let me leave this place alive. Awesome experience. As long as you don't hear a whisper in your ear " Don Corleone sends his regards "...

Plenty of old-school gangsters have met up with UNNATURAL CAUSES of death with warm towels over their faces while getting shaved at their favorite barbershop. Which brings their overall intelligence into question. I mean, you're a f**king gangster with a multitude of enemies; Why in the hell would you allow anyone to place a towel over your face much less at the same barbershop that you patron every Friday at exactly 3:30 pm? When you have those kinds of murderous enemies, you either shave your damn self or employ a barber who does house calls. 🏃💨 🔫

A solid year now. Only minor nicks occasionally, no bandaids. About 12 straight razors, 3 shavettes, 4 strops, 3 hones and gobs of soaps, mugs, balms, creams, witch hazel, brushes, etc. SUPER SHAVES and a real feeling of accomplishment. I even wonder if I've forgotten how to shave with a cartridge razor because I don't want to waste a good beard on one. LOL. I'm 75.. I learned about 75% of it from your videos, Geofatboy. My grandfather was a barber. This year I started cutting my own hair and I then got interested in shaving as well. I asked my family if we inherited some blades when my grand father passed away. My oncle got me a briefcase with lots of scissors, a couple clippers and 3 straight razors. They all are in quite good shape and super sharp. After watching your video I practised a bit and now my arms and chest are a mess lol. But thanks for the detailed video, in 15 minutes I already broke my fear barrier :)

Just attempted my first straight shave today after my eldest son bought me a Dovo razor for Xmas. I was surprised at how easy I was able to use my left hand and felt more comfortable with my left than my right, which was strange and not what I expected. Only a small nick which I think is to be expected. I feel that I am leaving a lot more bristle than when using my safety shaver. However, I am not going to push this to much or apply more downward pressure as I believe it will as you say just take time to master. All in all, I was impressed with the Prorasso shaving soap. Just got to practice now and remember to do more than one pass to get the result. Thanks for the video, very helpful and comforting to watch before I started myself. Now I'm going to make a strop to keep it razor sharp. Thanks again

Nicked my self twice on the first 2 shave. 1st time I slid the razor a little sideways and drew blood. The 2nd time I started with the wrong angle (i knew it was like 55-60° and took the risk since I didn't know what it would do...) and the razor dug in a little. Start with 20-30° and short strokes. It's actually scarier than it really is!

The only essentials for s straight razor are the razor, strop, hone (or service) and cream/soap. Though if you use a soap a brush is more or less necessary, but don't discount either. Brushes allow a little to go a long way. To be honest with a brush, a $3 bar of shaving soap could last a year. It will also help conserve most shaving creams yore already using since it helps a little to a long way.

A great video! I just received a Feather Artist Club folding razor for my birthday. I told my wife if she bought me anything related to shaving that she should consider Shave Nation as I've benefited from your videos. She did use Shave Nation and I hope others do as well. Amazon may have it cheaper but your videos help and also inspire. Anyway, I have to admit I was a bit nervous since it was my very first time. I also have to admit that I cut myself several times. Nothing big but enough to get my attention! Afterward, I found this video and discovered I wasn't holding the razor in the proper fashion. I've watched it three times now, pausing at various points to practice my grip to make sure it is right. I think my next go around will be better. Finally, I was happy to hear you say that the learning curve is steep and not short. That makes me feel not so bad about my first attempt! Thanks again!

I think it's just that when you try a safety razor or straight razor and get the hang of it, you realize how crappy the multi-blade jobs are. That and, like you said, it's a lot cheaper to shave using the older style methods. I'll never go back.

Then the other day I went to get my haircut at an old barbershop, and the I got a shave there with a straight razor. My face didn't get irritated by the straight razor and I left feeling relaxed. Thanks for the tutorial, I been shaving with a straight razor with the last 5 months and I'm happy with it. No cuts, bumps, redness on my neck, and a closer shave compare to the 4 blade razor. Yes the straight razor is really pricey but worth it and its my partner in crime now and for life. Now I feel like a badass when I shave which is a plus. :D

Good info for newbies and or people that don't have dad's to show them the way. I saw a lot of people with problems of burn and irritation. I used mach 3 and now, at the moment, I use safety and straight razors. I can get a close shave with any of the three I mentioned above. What you have to do with a "disposable" and even safety razors is just have your skin wet. The "shave" with cream or soap will get most all your hair off, but to stop that burn and get smooth, splash your face with cold water and have your face drenched with water and put the disposable razor under the cold water, don't shake off excess, and pull your skin (you will feel the tiny, tiny stumbles; good enough like that, but to get ultra smooth) and shave your neck or face a few or 4 strokes and then rinse blades again, maybe put more cold water with left hand on area to be shaved and repeat shaving. You will stop all burns and the like. I know people that shave with a mach 3 in the shower without soap. Remember, it has nothing to do with the razor, as long as it is relatively sharp. It's like cutting tile and using water to help the cutting process. Really wet face with some water on the blades and there will be no friction, that's why we burn or get irritated, outside of pimples and the like. My dad and his friends (dad born in 1919) used to use safety and straight razors but switched because of the ease of use.Watch old movies (1930s to 1970s) and everybody and their brother, all ages, are using straight or safety razors and it was no big deal and blades didn't cost and arm and a leg (referring to straight razors). Just use good soap and cream and plenty of water and the "disposable" razors won't burn you and will do , but a lot more safely, the exact same thing as a double edge blade, it's only a double edge blade with one side exposed, that's all it is and you only use one side at a time, when you get three with a mach 3. Like I said, the last few years I have been using safety razors and straight razors, but every now and then I throw in my mach 3 and it does a good job. Thanks God BlessJamez

Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. Just did my first straight shave, and thanks to this video, I came out with a cleaner shave than any cartridge I've ever used. I have no razor burn or bumps, and I only nicked myself a couple of times (and with a blade this sharp, the cut was so gentle and clean, I didn't even realize I'd nicked the skin until I saw a bit of blood coming up). Geo may be right in saying it will take around 100 shaves to reach your perfect technique, but with a little bit of homework, even a complete novice can come out pretty well. For anyone not sure that they want to try straight shaving, let me expound on the benefits. First is cost. Straight shaving can be expensive to get into, but the long-term costs are nowhere near what you get with cartridge systems. The cheapest decent cartridge I've found is the Pace 6 from Dorco USA. This company supplies Dollar Shave Club, so you may know the blade as the DSC Executive. These babies run $1.70 apiece when you buy a single 4-pack. A Gillete Fusion will set you back a whopping $4 per blade at WalMart. I bought a Parker straight razor with 100 disposable blades for $30 on Amazon. While I definitely want to get a proper razor eventually, I highly recommend this for anyone just getting their feet wet. You don't want to invest $200+ in the razor, strop, hone, etc and then find out it just isn't for you. My total initial investment including the razor, blades, pure badger brush, brush/razor stand, lather mug, and a big cake of shave soap came to about $60. If I get even two shaves out of a blade, that equates to almost 2 years' worth of shaves for the cost of about 1 years' worth of Fusion cartridges. Replacement packs are about $7.50 for 100 blades. Second, you get a better shave. No matter which cartridge I used, I always got missed stubble and razor bumps on my neck, even with a fresh blade. I've been shaving with cartridges for almost 15 years, and my first try with a straight razor is as close as any cartridge shave I've ever had. I also have no unsightly razor bumps. With even a month of practice, I know I'll be well beyond what I've ever been able to do with cartridges. Third, It just feels cool. Yes, it's more of a process (until I get a solid timed routine down, I'm going to be shaving at night instead of in the morning), but that process includes a bit of pampering yourself. Yes, putting a hot moist towel on your face helps soften the whiskers for a better shave, but it also feels damn good. It's relaxing. It's somehow just inherently more manly to bust out the lather mug and brush instead of some aerosol tube of goop and scrape off facial hair with an actual blade instead of some flimsy plastic nonsense. If that isn't enough of an experience for you, you can always play the Sweeney Todd soundtrack in the background.

When applying the cream, do you 'paint' the lather on with the brush or push down so it separates then go in circular motions? Which one are you meant to do, my new badger hair brush only works with painting it on allowing me to keep the brush's natural shape, but its giving me poor lather (isn't thick).
