Depends on opportunities. If you're constantly turning away work because of lack of tools, careful use of proper business loans can be a big boost.

Personally, I think you are on track doing what you’re doing. You turn out good work with your old equipment! You fall in to the trap of being in debt to upgrade everything and then when the economy crashes you’re stuck! Do what you can do, pay cash for your equipment and you’ll survive just fine. Trust me, you will be an old man in about 2 blinks of the eye. Shop looks good!

Thank you for the tour, and very well done for accumulating enough equipment to carry out such varied work, without being crippled with debt to get there. "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" and to adapt and get there, is the sign of a Natural Engineer with the skills and experience to get himself out of a pit of Muck without having to debate whether to use a spade or a shovel, and whether they should have a flat or pointy end!

Love the stuff. Charge yourself rent for all the space you take with junk. Ex. The tractor you rebuilding. Take the sqft of how much the tractor takes up and how much you building costs in sqft. Then see if it’s worth having it sit there. I do this for everything I have sitting around to see if it’s worth keeping around or if it would make my work life better without having the clutter. Love your set up.keep up the good work.

The philosophy of making things work serves you well. So many people trying to get started rack up huge initial debts by buying the latest, greatest everything. Even if they hardly know what they are doing. You bought what you could afford, and adapted. Being old I like all the old machinery. It was built to last. And built to be serviced by a human. Not a computer. Things have changed and some things improved. But anything that totally relies on a computer. Will break down or have built in obsolescence. From watching your videos the kit you have pieced together can turn out most things combined with your knowledge. Be interesting to see what else appears in the next few months.

Nice video. You should pat yourself on the back for all you've done and accomplished so far at a young age! You've accumulated lots of great heavy duty equipment to help you do your job day in and day out. Sure, some of it is older equipment but if it's gets the job done for now, that's all you need. As you mentioned, you can upgrade down the road when you have all the revenue from KZbin from your 500k subscribers! :) You remind me of a younger Kurtis from Cutting Edge Machinery. He's grown his business and equipment from his hard work and I'm sure a nice check from KZbin each month due to his 600k subscribers.

Great to see around your place. Remember everyone has to start from humble beginnings. Don't worry too much about the Archdale drill rumbling. Curtis at Cutting Edge Engineering had a similar problem with his drill. After stripping it and replacing all the bearings it was still as noisy, and put it down to how the teeth were meshing. Good luck for the future, look forward to seeing how you progress with the shop in the coming months.

When you talked about buying old tools because they were cheap, and one was worth more as scrap than what you paid, you reminded me of Kurtis on Cutting Edge. That's a good thing. Not only do you have skills and improving, but you also have a head for business.

The old H50F Hyster is still a great Lift truck from the 60s . They were rated at 5000lbs at 24" LC with 3 stage upright and sideshift. Putting 72" forks on it moves the load centre moment way out (42" forks were standard for pallet work) and I dare say like many lift truck users in a machine shop you use the tip of the forks for lifting or working a load off the deck. At the tip you don't have much more than a ton and a bit before the steer axle gets real light. The Hyster is a comparable machine to your other old lathe and mill (strong and robust)- a bit of care and attention and they will last a century.

Pretty sure you have enough equipment to fabricate a machine to put a monkey in space. I’m an old guy, and from experience I can say that I don’t know that there is an easy solution to acquiring the right equipment. I’ve tried acquiring the “best” when I start something, but I found I didn’t have experience to know what was the best equipment for me, for my personal work habits are. So acquiring equipment that I know I won’t loose a lot of money on, then using it, and abusing it, and modify it and learning everything I can allows me to know what gear will work the best for me. I thing you are very smart to acquire equipment to allow you to start gaining the working knowledge, and determine what you need going forward. In addition some machines have changed so much in the past 40 years, that some thing are obsolete today. You’ve got a really great shop, and if there a way to make a 36 hour day, life will be beautiful. Thanks for sharing your work, I’m sure you will be very successful! I also watch cutting edge eng., and he’s got some great videos, and a lot of shop made tools. When I was very young I was interested in a very specialized metal working area. The first year was spend learning how to make the tools to move forward in the trade ! That always stuck with me that making the tools is a big part of being a master.

Sweet!! The old kit is always the best. You should do a video on the profiler, I've never seen one and I can't believe it cuts 50mm with propane, well handy piece of kit I would imagine!!!

We all have to start somewhere, when you think of what you've achieved with the machinery you've got must be really proud of yourself. Hopefully when you get your new milling machine set up, it will make a lot of difference. Really like that cutting table with the magic eye set up, it looks dated but am sure it would go on forever.

It’d be awesome to have all brand new top of the range tools but you make do with what you have. Those old tooling will last a lifetime and if you do sell, you’ll probably get more than you paid with the way the market is at the moment. That’s a pretty decently equipped workshop for a relatively young man. I’m enjoying watching what you do, from sunny Wakefield 🙂

Sounds like you got your head screwed on for buying at the right price .. it makes perfectly good sense to buy the older equipment in my opinion because its usually within the budget and being older more chance its solid and it was built to last to begin with . Easy to go out and buy new however unless you got a huge bank balance and a lot of work in the pipeline you can go skint very quick . 2 things in any fabricating or repair shop that are essential are a good toolkit capable of doing what you need it to and the right amount of space , too much and you end up with wasted areas usually filled up with waste or junk . And if too small your climbing over yourself or the job with nowhere to store possible stock or even the next job inline . I've only been watch a few months but I'm enjoying the videos . Keep up the good work and good idea on upgrading when you can

Careful cutting up the pressbrake, all that metal is likely there to keep it rigid, you might end up with it flexing.
