I used to polish the headlight housings on my expedition, but after almost 20 years I finally bought a pair of the clear lense headlight housings off of Ebay and they light up the road better. Still not like a new vehicle as I'm still using halogen bulbs. I didn't want to blind oncoming traffic with HID's or LED's. Those things are horrendous when used in halogen housings and blind you, especially on a dark two lane highway. They way you're doing it is a heck of a lot better than those headlight restoring kits for sure. Some of those are marginal at best.
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
I've debated just buying a new set a few times.
@vegasfordguy4 жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford I'll tell you my experience. The first set of OEM "style" made in China housings fit fine and looked factory, however the thin clearcoat peeled off within 4 months and then they pretty much looked like the factory ones. I think I paid $30 for the pair with bulbs so no biggie. The second set I ordered were the clear lense housings, they've been on for a year and so far still clear, however I do use wax on them just as preventative maintenance. The road is brighter, but not by as much as I expected with halogen bulbs. I think I paid around $45 for the pair and happy with them so far. I know some people like the clear look, I actually prefer the OEM look, but needed more usable light for driving these dark Northern Nevada highways. Your factory lights came out really nice though! I definitely agree with your process. I've done the sand and clear coat on other headlight housings and they looked excellent for a year or two before the clear coat started peeling. My 89 Jeep has glass sealed beam headlights as does your 79ish 4x4 Ford truck! Problem solved.

Best method for polishing headlamps. Thanks for sharing. Wear a dustmask ...fibers and abrasive are not organic. Your lungs will thank you. Best to hand wet sand with green scotch bright pad to breakup the oxidized surface before using rouge bar. Makes polishing go faster. Also clean your wheel with a rasp ,or 'rake' made for that purpose, to fluff up polishing wheel fibers. Clogged fibers develop a crusty surface that slows the polishing action.

Worth noting that this will also remove the protective coating from headlights. So once you start you have to repeat or put a protectant on them. Even then you will need to do every 12 months or so. Careful on the fine cracks in the plastic also as it can make them worse. Weigh up the cost of this verse new headlights depending on age and condition of vehicle.

clear coat is a sacrificial layer and reduces the impact on the plastic by environmental damage. Each time the plastic is buffed its reduced in thickness. The sacrifice layer can be removed and replaced and affords a longer life to the clear lens than just buffing. A buffed lens will need rebuffing every 12 months or so, whereas a lens with protective coat can last 5 years before it has deteriorated to the point of needing restoring again.
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I can rebuff in 60 seconds. So 5 minutes for 5 years. To sand, polish and repaint takes hours. And that's if the recoat is flawless and doesn't start peeling off in a months time. I've had many customers cars come in with failed clear coated lenses.

I've played around with that method. The Acetone or Lacquer Thinner melts the top layer. The oil fills in the voids the wax holds the oil in. Original headlights have a clear coat with UV inhibitor on them. It last a long time but eventually wears away. UV is what really kills the outer layer of plastic. So after you polish the headlights spray on a clear coat that has a UV inhibitor in it. Easy to find if you search for clear coat UV. Then the polish job should last for yrs. Just depends on how good a job you do with polishing and how good the UV clear coat is you spray on.

Very nice results. How do they look 30, 60 and 180 days later? If this is sandling out the millions of microscratches to a smooth surface, should not re-cloud any faster than original. If it is just cleaning the dirt out of the scratches...they will fill back in quick. Those sanding and clear-coating kits are a joke... I got suckered into buying one of those. As far as Tripoli, and the Pad..... cost?

It lasts for a year or two for an outdoor kept vehicle or longer for a garage kept. The Expedition in the video was last done around 4 years ago, the Buick has never had it done. It essentially sands the top layer of plastic away. It's just like using 10,000 grit sand paper but your moving it so fast it actually removes material. You can buy everything to mount in your drill and the polishing compound for around 20bucks.

I saw a vid about using paint acetone on plastic headlights, have you seen, heard or tried that??
@sixtyfiveford4 жыл бұрын
Acetone, lacquer thinner or bug spray. It melts the plastic and looks great for a week or so then it's worse than before you started.
