🦞 In this no-nonsense buyer's guide to Spirited Away (DVD, 2003), I unbox the two-disc DVD of Spirited Away first released by Walt Disney in 2003. I show the first disc, which features the original film, an introduction by John Lasseter, and " The Art of Spirited Away " which displays how Spirited Away was translated for audiences who speak English.
ℹ️ Disc two features four bonus shorts: a short storyboard to scene reenactment, a Nippon Television Special with closed captions, the original Japanese movie trailers, and a storyboard-to-scene comparison.
The movie can be purchased from online retailers for around $US 10. When I originally purchased the DVDs, which Studio Ghibli licensed to Walt Disney Studios in North America, I thought perhaps the movie was split between two discs. However, this didn't turn out to be the case, as the entire feature film is released on the first disc.
I really enjoyed Spirited Away as it took me back to my childhood. Chihiro, a ten-year old girl, moves to a new home with her family; before they arrive, however, Chihiro's mother and father eat food from what appears to be an abandoned theme park. This food was meant for the spirits, and her parents are turned into pigs. The child must now save her parents from slaughter. Chihiro's new name is Sen under the leadership of Yubaba, the head of the bathhouse.
Can Sen save her parents and leave the spirit realm?
