A friend crashed a Q1 into a forest. He survived. Took a bit to get back to walking though. Be careful. His mistake was adding dual ignition. All the airport guys made him paranoid that he needed it. But the modifications weighed it down and weren’t wise. A good rule is don’t mess with what works.

Probably good advice. This plane crashed after I sold it, due to exhaust pipe failure which stopped the engine. It ended upside down in a corn field and luckily the new owner wasn't injured, but might have head injuries if the corn had not cushioned his impact with the ground. There wasn't much of a roll over structure. Otherwise it's a pretty safe design.

Hi Mike, Did you build this Quickie yourself? It is too bad the pitch on the prop is not a degree or two increased to bring down the rpm of the engine just a little bit. It does make quite a bit of noise. Burt Rutan designed some amazing aircraft, this is one of my favorites. The French Cri Cri is pretty amazing as well, especially the one where they replaced the the twin single piston engines with two AMT Netherlands model aircraft turbine engines
@MikeToomey Жыл бұрын
I bought it as a project and finished it. More pitch on the prop would reduce power and climb rate which are already minimally acceptable. The noise isn’t bad with noise cancelling headphones. Loved the quickie. Would have been perfect with a little more power.
@chrisdaniel1339 Жыл бұрын
@@MikeToomey What about finding an old Rotax and having it rebuilt. Rotax 277 at 26 hp, Rotax 377 at 35 hp, Rotax 477 at 41.6 hp, or the Rotax 503 at 50 hp. A 503 would be great for a short ground roll takeoff and a good climb out and then be able to throttle back to 50% or less for a nice cruise. Hirth in Germany also makes small 2 stroke aircraft engines. Another option is use a micro turboprop from the RC plane world. The link below is a Pilatus PC21 model weighing 143 lbs (the same weight of a quickie) and it has a Jetcat turboprop engine and a 5 blade propeller. It has a super short ground roll and the climb rate is sick, even with the added weight of a pilot your quickie would probably really move. It is amazing and would be very smooth as everything rotates the same direction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnXFnpJ8ZbGNodUsi=HUQQ4k-rgPYnvcBB Jet Cri Cri kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3mpaK2GnNSqZ8ksi=fbDrr0qng113_j6W

Top speed is 115 mph
@harrisonvc91754 жыл бұрын
I’m confused... the description states that this aircraft consumes 1.2gal/hour @ 90mph. I did the math and at 1.2gal/hour fuel burn you’ must be getting 75mpg. That seems to good to be true, are you sure 1.2gal/hour is the accurate number?
@MikeToomey4 жыл бұрын
Samson H it’s difficult to get accurate burn rates at that low end of consumption, but that is close. I used 60 mpg for flight planning. You can google the CAFE flight efficiency competition of the mid 1980s and see carefully certified results for the Q1, Q200, Varieze and others. 75 mpg is possible.

What kind of engine and prop are you running?

Onan 18 hp with 20 hp heads and a Prince carbon P tip propeller. First flight was underpowered because I had the wrong prop, but could climb 400 fpm with the prop you saw in the video. You can see the difference if you watch my first flight video on the Q1 Quickie playlist. Thanks

Por favor, veja meus vídeos do Long Ez e Cozy 3 no meu canal. Low altitude, low airspeed, high power climb over populated shopping mall? Maybe a little different climb platform would be safer.
@MikeToomey5 жыл бұрын
No good options straight ahead. 20 hp doesn’t allow any better climb. An early turn over the shopping mall keeps me close to the runway and within glide distance to the nearest bean field in case of power failure. Got a better idea?

@MikeToomey5 жыл бұрын
It’s a very small 2 cylinder Onan 20 hp engine that fits just forward of my feet. You can seen the seam of the upper cowl... that’s where the firewall separates the engine from the cockpit. The engine flywheel actually protrudes aft into the cockpit, but is shrouded by a 13 “ pie pan (yes, the kind you use to cook pie)😳

Average climb was 400 fpm, but I had the wrong prop on first flight and only got around 50 fpm. Watch first flight video by searching "n83mt". I think it was 4 laps around pattern to get 1000' agl.

With R 503 it would really come alive.
@MikeToomey5 жыл бұрын
There have been a couple fly with a Rotax 503, but I’ve heard the 2 stroke engine doesn’t do well, except in a narrow rpm range, which complicates power management during landing. The Q1 also lands at relatively high speed which increases risk with a less reliable 2 stroke engine. I have to admit, the 2 stroke power is impressive and definitely cures the sluggish climb.
@dmitryc65325 жыл бұрын
@@MikeToomey the reliability concerns has been addressed about 15 years ago. These rotax engines that rotax churns out are bullet proof. I have a friend with 1200 trouble free hours on rotax 582. I have 643 hours on rotax 503. If used with rotax muffler it's a very responsive engine throughout the entire range. But to each their own they say. :-) neat airplane!
@MikeToomey5 жыл бұрын
Dmitry C you have 643 hours more than I have with a Rotax, so Your opinion is based on actual first hand experience. My opinion was just based on speculation and internet stories. Maybe if battery technology makes another leap forward we can all fly electric for quiet and powerful reliability. I think the Q1 would be a good airframe for electric power. Thanks for your comments.
