Very beautiful Quickie! Nice job! I first saw these in the ‘80’s as a kid at Oshkosh and fell in love. I always wanted to build one...with a Long-EZ sharing the hanger ;-)

A friend crashed a Q1 into a forest. He survived. Took a bit to get back to walking though. Be careful. His mistake was adding dual ignition. All the airport guys made him paranoid that he needed it. But the modifications weighed it down and weren’t wise. A good rule is don’t mess with what works.

Yes, sorry for the boring 5 minutes. The video was unedited because it was just a demo flight for the buyer. I just stuck the go pro on my head and went flying so he could see how it should look for his first flight. Never expected this video to go viral after two years with only a few views. The plane is called a Quickie or Q1, designed by Burt Rutan in the early 80, kits produced by Quickie Aircraft Corp (QAC). It has a 2 cylinder Oman 20 hp engine which burned about 1.5 gallons per hour. Top speed is 115 mph.

Probably good advice. This plane crashed after I sold it, due to exhaust pipe failure which stopped the engine. It ended upside down in a corn field and luckily the new owner wasn't injured, but might have head injuries if the corn had not cushioned his impact with the ground. There wasn't much of a roll over structure. Otherwise it's a pretty safe design.

It’s docile once you get to know it’s landing temperament. The tailwheel has very little authority, so good rudder control is important to keep it straight on landing. Otherwise, it’s very stable and easy to fly.

I see a normal tail rudder, but no rudder pedals (0:35); does the rudder have a fixed link with aileron input? Therefore no side-slip capability? And tail-wheel steering.. how is it controlled? Everything via single stick?
@MikeToomey

The rudder pedals pivot from above and are not easily seen in the video. The rudder is conventional. Motorcycle brake levers are mounted on the rudder pedals to provide (minimally effective) differential braking.

I'm still a student pilot, but I'm hoping to get my endorsement right after I finish my license, I already have a little bit of TW time. I figure this project will take me at least a year, so I'll have plenty of time to build more experience before I even attempt to taxi this thing.

Hi Mike, Did you build this Quickie yourself? It is too bad the pitch on the prop is not a degree or two increased to bring down the rpm of the engine just a little bit. It does make quite a bit of noise. Burt Rutan designed some amazing aircraft, this is one of my favorites. The French Cri Cri is pretty amazing as well, especially the one where they replaced the the twin single piston engines with two AMT Netherlands model aircraft turbine engines
@MikeToomey
@MikeToomey Жыл бұрын
I bought it as a project and finished it. More pitch on the prop would reduce power and climb rate which are already minimally acceptable. The noise isn’t bad with noise cancelling headphones. Loved the quickie. Would have been perfect with a little more power.
@chrisdaniel1339
@chrisdaniel1339 Жыл бұрын
@@MikeToomey What about finding an old Rotax and having it rebuilt. Rotax 277 at 26 hp, Rotax 377 at 35 hp, Rotax 477 at 41.6 hp, or the Rotax 503 at 50 hp. A 503 would be great for a short ground roll takeoff and a good climb out and then be able to throttle back to 50% or less for a nice cruise. Hirth in Germany also makes small 2 stroke aircraft engines. Another option is use a micro turboprop from the RC plane world. The link below is a Pilatus PC21 model weighing 143 lbs (the same weight of a quickie) and it has a Jetcat turboprop engine and a 5 blade propeller. It has a super short ground roll and the climb rate is sick, even with the added weight of a pilot your quickie would probably really move. It is amazing and would be very smooth as everything rotates the same direction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnXFnpJ8ZbGNodUsi=HUQQ4k-rgPYnvcBB Jet Cri Cri kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3mpaK2GnNSqZ8ksi=fbDrr0qng113_j6W

@MikeToomey
@MikeToomey 5 жыл бұрын
This a great little aircraft which is easy to build and easy to fly. I purchased my kit in 1978 and completed it in 1980. I flew the bird out to San Diego from Austin, TX in 1982. It took appx 10 hours. It was wonderful weather and I met lots of neat people along the way and the airplane performed flawlessly . I sold the airplane to a gentleman in 1983 and moved back to Austin during that same time period. I have not seen the airplane nor have I heard of the gentleman who purchased it. Does it still exist? Really good price for cool plane. Engine started very easily. Is it direct drive? I wonder what it could do with 60 horses. Such potential in aviation
@MikeToomey
@MikeToomey 5 жыл бұрын
Dan Frederiksen yes, direct drive. Loved that plane. 60 hp would have made it awesome. There are a couple Q1 builders installing electric power. That would make it great once the battery technology advances enough to provide more endurance.

@DanFrederiksen 5 жыл бұрын
@@MikeToomey it's odd that the Q200 versions can't go much faster than 300km/h when the Q2 does close to 200 with 20hp. Maybe the wings are designed for too much lift for high speed flight.
@MikeToomey
@MikeToomey 5 жыл бұрын
Dan Frederiksen both Q200 and Q1 are nearly the most efficient airframes ever designed. They both routinely won the CAFE flight efficiency competition races in the 1980s. I don’t know the km/hr conversion, but a Q200 can cruise at almost 200 mph and the Q1 max is 115 mph. That is better fuel economy than most hybrid cars.... and a lot more fun!
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 5 жыл бұрын
@@MikeToomey yeah it's amazing with 20HP but only 193mph at 2000 feet with 100HP. Little over 50% more speed for 5x the power. I'm guessing the wing is too thick for speed. It would need thinner wings for the 100horse

Samson H it’s difficult to get accurate burn rates at that low end of consumption, but that is close. I used 60 mpg for flight planning. There have been a couple fly with a Rotax 503, but I’ve heard the 2 stroke engine doesn’t do well, except in a narrow rpm range, which complicates power management during landing. The Q1 also lands at relatively high speed which increases risk with a less reliable 2 stroke engine. I have to admit, the 2 stroke power is impressive and definitely cures the sluggish climb.
