Nothing like sitting on the fence with your thoughts Greg. Monetisation is a no brainer. I’m not sure but it will probably improve the algorithms as well as pay for the Millionaires cake. I’m looking forward to picking up my copy of Capture Lakeland on Saturday. Anyway, I better go, I need to serve another customer wanting a print. I really don’t know how I find the time 😬Keep going matey👍

A point that has always stuck with me was from Casey ... he didn't' monetize his first 100 million views ... Too many folks are thinking about the $$ from YT as soon as they can and I think they are missing the point ... I've said this before, 2019 is going to be the critical mass of vlogging, the tipping point, perhaps we have already reached that and while there may be a few new kids on the block who will rise to the top, I think for most of everyone else that boat has already sailed, in fact, sailed early 2018 ... That's not to say they shouldn't keep doing it (do what you love and ignore the haters) and in fact, they may get interaction from different markets which help to sell books, prints and workshops, but from a pure YT perspective .... I'm not too sure, or at the very least they will get a pretty rude wake-up call in regards to subs and $$ .... And yes, I was one of the first to comment on your first video that I didn't like your vibe as I felt it perhaps was a little too critical of those trying to make a go of things .. I'm big enough to stand corrected on subsequent videos and have indeed enjoyed your various posts this past year :)

This is the thing, virtually everyone who if pushing out videos similar to me, is monetising when they can. In reality, the income is tiny at this level, and being in a full-time job, I don't have any need to do it. Is that the differentiator for me? That my videos aren't monetised, at least for the foreseeable future? Possibly. Though, another thing struck me, would monetisation lead to stronger growth? Possibly, I mean, does the YT algorithm, amongst other things it looks at, does it favour monetised content over un-monetised content? There is certainly more incentive for it to favour one over the other. Anyway, I remain undecided, like I say, I don't NEED to do it necessarily. Thanks for sticking around Nigel, thought you'd left near the start until you commented recently :)

I've often wondered why some people vlog - I can understand it if your a full time professional driving a business then it's about getting your presence out there as with any business. You didn't really say why you Vlog. I'm glad you do as I find you quite engaging in a no bullshit way and have learnt from your location vlogs. If it helps with your Book Sales then hopefully that will balance the books but I have no way of guesstimating that. I probably will purchase a copy. Drones ... Don't get me started ...

I think you should monetarise your channel. I've been vlogging for the last six months and have found out for myself how much time and effort it takes to produce hopefully quality vlogs. So keep up the good work and I hope you get some reward for your effort.

Good insight to the costs involved. Who'd have thought it'd be so much. Although I'd imagine if you weren't vlogging you'd still incur the trip costs to photograph Snowdonia, the Lakes and Scotland? Hope the wife's not injured you too much, wish you a speedy recovery
@GregWhitton5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, many of those trips would still have happened regardless, but even so, interesting to see how much it has all cost. Neither of my eyes are black...yet.

I do nature videos in Utah . I don't monetize and never will. The amount youtube gives you is not worth the money to me . I make videos because of my passion of the whole process. Getting out in the mountains to capture the footage. Taking it home to edit and turn it all into a nature show is my hobby. The cost of the equipment is just the tools I use to get the footage. You have the passion too or you would of thrown in the towel years ago. Keep capturing beauty and if you make a few bucks from monetizing , more power to you .

Interesting insight Greg, there’s definitely is a lot of bullshit around print sales etc. I think that photographers don’t really tend to buy other photographers prints to hang on their wall these days maybe something like small box sets is the way to go, but still has the ball ache of putting them together. Did you forget to factor in Monty’s appearance fee into the costs?
@GregWhitton5 жыл бұрын
Generally I think most photographers acquire the work of others whom they consider peers via print swaps, I know that's how I've acquired many prints over the last few years. I'd still fork out for something very special, but I certainly don't see many folks regularly buying prints from other photographers.
@summitpaul5 жыл бұрын
I don't think any of us enter into making these videos with any intention of them being a get rich quick scheme? But don't go adding up the costs, Greg, that's just beating us all up! Haha. Nice video. Also, I reckon most people see (and click away from) ads as standard now. If an ad were to put you off watching a video, you'd never watch anything! Turn em on mate.

I tried vlogging for the 1st time the other day (test run before Torridon next week), my tip, don't use the flip screen. with the m50 you know focus will hit all the time at 1080p. I found that when I moved it out the way, problem solved. Oh and just turn on the adverts dude... It's expensive why the hell not! Will still watch. Keep up the good work.

I'm really sorry :'( Jeez, I feel like a cheapskate now, as I bought the Matin green cloth elsewhere, from your recommendation. I'm so guilt ridden that the next time I see you, I'll throw in a gold pound coin to your hat, which should boost you to £12...BOOM I actually fell depressed that after watching this vlog, the truth hurts, regarding the level of money spent on camera equipment, planning, staying and driving to locations locally and around the world etc. Its always a nagging thought in my mind for me as I don't get anything monetarily back, due to being rubbish haha. But I would say the enjoyment of being out in the field or wherever in the wind, snow or sunshine with my camera soothes all the thoughts away. Its a passion I think, and while I watch a few vlogs from others I can feel it in their commentary as well. As for turning the Ads on or not? Its a tough call really, if its only a few pennies then is it worth it?
@GregWhitton5 жыл бұрын
It's really as expensive or as cheap as you want to make it tbh, I could have done things a lot cheaper, I just didn't think about it. And, don't worry about the cloth ;)

Turn the ads on, nothing for free in this world; they’re a tad annoying certainly but I don’t understand why people get quite so incensed about them. Just a thought re the new camera angle, it seems fine apart from you getting very close in a few times which is quite scary! Felt like I could smell last nights kebab on your breath 😜 Ps hopefully your vlogging efforts, while costly, will help increase your book sales 🙏🏻 I might even buy it ;)

I have never bought anybody else's photo's why should I? I take my own pictures, the same goes for calenders, l have never paid to listen to a lecture by a so called pro landscape photographer either, if I wanted to hear a live commentary with pictures shown I would go to a local photo society, how ever I have travelled once with a well known photographer and 22 other photographers to another country where we all split up into pairs and done our own thing, and every evening one of us would do a talk on what we had been up to, I can honestly say I am self taught in photography, I have never desired to be a paid photographer. After saying all that I do get great enjoyment watching you guys (and girls) on KZbin on how you do things, some of the best images that I have ever seen are on Y/T....the money it costs to set up blogging would be a big no, no for me I would rather spend that money on travel....if somebody wants to pay you then yes take it and eventually it will pay for all you gear and work you put into your channel.....once again thank you for sharing...
