What a great video, and I recognise quite a lot of the places you visited. I could have spent every day of my 7 day holiday up in Dinorwic Quarry…….is it being selfish to say that preferably just me and my camera..!! Only came back home to Yorkshire yesterday, and been up and around the quarry quite a few times. Can’t wait to head back into Snowdonia.

Thanks for that explanation. I don't use my TS-E as much as I should. Never thought of using the 1.4x with it.

Interesting approach. Any reason why you're not just measuring the height of the camera above the intended plane of focus and using a tilt-table to work out the degree of tilt?

Stunning work throughout! Are most of the shots at the end from your first morning stop that day at Aiguille du Midi? I particularly love the shot at 24:08, 24:30 (and the panorama between those two), and 25:31 (what gorgeous light)!

Hey man, thanks for the comment. It's over 3 years ago since I posted this so I cant really remember in what order I did things. I went up the Aguille Du Midi 3 times I think.

Why not just focus stack with a nice 24 mm prime or a sharp 24-70 mm F2.8 zoom?

This is the only video I know of that actually explains the technique of achieving focus with a digital camera. 1. Compose and set aperture, etc. 2. Focus on the foreground. 3. Tilt for background focus. 4. Alternatively refocus and re-tilt until you've nailed it. Thanks Greg!

Greg you are so bloody funny, wish you was still on here, this is great comedy and nobody does this, everything is so serious KZbin about landscape photography, I just love this type of stuff
@n1k1george Жыл бұрын
A most practical primer! Most videos on this subject dwell on and on about the technical aspects of lens tilt that it seems so difficult to use. Also, another benefit of tilting that seems to go largely unmentioned is that by using tilt you can use much wider apertures to shoot at higher shutter speeds, e.g. F/5.6 vs F/16 when photographing a field of flowers blowing about in the wind.

To avoid sounding silly do some research as to the place your talking about. The long "distribution she'd" was a very large mill for processing the slate, as for not interesting its huge aprox 2 football pitchs, if you can't find a good composition your not looking hard enough.
@GregWhitton Жыл бұрын
Dude, you’re commenting on a video from 4 years ago. You can learn calculus about a dozen times over in that time…hence, i care not what i didn’t know then, only what i know now. As for a good composition, i stand by what i said (no idea what i said btw, haven’t watched it for 4 years) 😀😉

The "trolly" is part of a blond in. It was a wire rope haulage system that raised and lowered waggons. The winding wheel is a compressed air winch, depending which one it could have been part of the blond in. Love the photos.

@GregWhitton2 жыл бұрын
@@OliverHollingdale no, there is no patrol and nothing to pay. However, you enter entirely at your own risk once you leave the public right of way (path) that bisects the quarry. Many people enter the quarry though, climbers, photographers, explorers, dog walkers, etc.

Brilliant, thanks for posting I thoroughly enjoyed all four parts and you've been a massive help with locating several subjects I want to shoot there, all but one that is, another video of Dinorwic I've seen features two carts loaded with slate and still sat on tracks, but for the life of me I can't locate them, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places or perhaps they've since been moved or buried in a rock slide, can you help? Thank and keep up the good work 👏

Thanks Greg, I have since located them on Google Earth and confirmed their position by flying the drone across on a quick recon, they're quite some distance from the areas you've covered in your series so I wanted to be sure I was right as it's a long walk to get there if I was wrong 🤣

so, what you have to do: 1. decide upon foreground and backgroud 2. focus on the foreground with the focus ring 3. focus on the background with the tilt knob 4. accept that it will take few attempts, each time the adjustment should be less

Fine Image, but as we could not see the screen while you was setting up the system it would have been nice to show at least the images during the diverse steps.
@Indigo47112 жыл бұрын
Sorry Greg but you're doing it wrong. To use this lens for tilt focus you first have to use your focus ring to focus onto the mid-way point of your subject. Then tilt until the closest and further distance points are in focus.

Hi Greg, great video, thank you. Just curious if you have to press the depth of field button when checking sharp focus at near or far subject? Otherwise the dof showing is that of widest aperture- f3.5? Thank you from N.Z!

Just so I'm clear, you made a video to diss other KZbin photographers/channels for 'lying' that they take successful images frequently, and your only real b-roll footage was two sequences of you walking over the same bridge twice from 5m apart, and then you didn't post any landscape photography? I'm failing to see the beef myself

No, always down from the datum, but up and down below that when adjusting. You're effectively zeroing in on the target.

@@GregWhitton I sat with friend, who is thinking of buying such a lens, watching this epic but we realised afterwards this was nearly ten minutes of our lives we could not get back - sadly! There are other videos that give good examples of what can be achieved with such a T & S lens as in ‘before and after’ shots that would have been nice - constructive even - as opposed to seeing loads of the local scenery, canned music that could send somebody to sleep but to be fair, your comments in the last few seconds summed up very much how we both felt.. PS: I have just checked online and Jeremy Beadle is no longer with us, so it was not one of his little pranks..

Man's impact on the global temperature is ridiculously small. These periods of melting and freezing are a minutes in historic scale but just a bit too long for us to get our heads around. So smart guys and girls invent an explanation for why the ice melts - CO2!!! (of which we in fact have too little) - and they easily makes us all guilty because they own all the fancy models and nobody care to investigate the "problem" themselves. Then the smarties begin to take money to save our souls, and soon they own an environmental industry. But actually we are facing a new cooling period - a new ice age. Get your batteries topped up and return with a video of the 3 to 5 kilometer high ice barrier we Europeans faced last time. It'll be back, I promise.
