Very smooth but when you are that good some of the "moves" are hard to follow. It would be beneficial to confirm the settings for some of the commands and slow the presentation when new commands are being used (off-setting the bottom polygon is very hard to follow) . I am working with two screens and pause the presentation or repeat it many times.

Hi Jonathan, I'm trying to make the roof but the polygon doesn't snap to the midpoint (1:58). I've tried changing the snapping options with the snapping palette but it didn't change anything. Do you know what the problem could be? (I'm using the 2021 Designer Vectorworks)

Hi, it is hard to know without seeing, but are you sure you have the correct snap settings and were you using the correct automatic working planes?

@jonathanpickup Jonathan, the option for 'create multiple viewports' at 17.11 isn't available on the version I am using (educational university version). Is this only in the regular version and have you encountered this issue before? It looks like a very helpful option ... Many thanks.

Using VW-A 2024, whenever I use the "shell-solid" tool to create a roof in your second method, and select "outside" It won't automatically create the peak-instead it extrudes the shape it perfectly tangent to the lines, leaving a 60º triangular gap at the peak of the roof. Any idea of what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
@archoncad7 ай бұрын
I think I know what the issue is, but you will have to confirm this. When you extract the roof faces, they have to added them together using Add Solid before you have tried to use the Shell Solid tool? I have a movie that will go live tonight. here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaGxpZKVasamnqs

@@archoncad That video helped-especially isolating the roof shell-solid operation inside the roof group. The error on my part was not keeping track of my undo-history-so while I had created a solid, I reversed it unintentionally while trying to undo my "shell-solid" operation. Now I can see that in the Object Info palette it will tell me whether something is a "Solid Addition", or "2 NURBS Surfaces". The shell-solid tool works exactly as you show it when isolated in a group, but when not isolated it tries to combine all adjacent and unselected geometry-I think this is a setting I have unintentionally selected.

Hello Jonathan, great videos. I've got a problem creating hollow interior with Extract + PushPull tool. I'm able to do it almost succesfully, but there stays some "floor" element, which I remove afterwards by another step. You in your tutorial didn't have to do anytning more, than just pull the indoors up towards the roof.

Hi, sorry for the later reply, make sure you are using the Automatic working planes and you have selected the correct options in the tool bar, instant push/pull.

Excellent tutorial. As always, you show how to use multiple tools and thats super. Can one duplicate the doors and windows (openings) to place some more of them in the model? Can you place stock doors and windows in the model to speed the process? Ramón.
@archoncad4 жыл бұрын
It’s possible but editing the solid addition or solid subtraction and copying the extrusions. It would be better to use the model method to make the holes and then use the Vectorworks door or window objects.

Its not explained how, for example, when you want to create a new window how you could position it accurately with measurements on the wall exactly where you want it. it seems it just positioned where ever you randomly click the mouse.
@archoncad Жыл бұрын
I know it looks like it is random, but you look at 7:27, I snapped to the head of the door and I have my automatic working plane active. At this point if I hit the G key on the keyboard, that will set a floating datum and I can then use that datum to control the positioning of the window relative to the door.

Hello! When I click offset, the polygon i made just offsets on the Z plane (it moves downward and the size of the shape does not change) instead of appearing the way your's looks (inset) What should I do?

Mr. J Pickup, Part one was very useful, I 've tried it but I failed to select the area when I made the line to do the slop of the roof, what snape you used at that step, you notice there was no snap box to view during your lesson if you can explain what arrangements we have to pick to make it works?
@archoncad4 жыл бұрын
Hi. The snaps that I always use are: snap to object angle snaps snap to intersection smart cursor These are your 4 most useful snaps. When you draw your polygon to create the slope on the roof you must ensure snapping to the left edge of the object. When you get to the top all the peak of the roof, ensure you are snapping to the top edge ( and I snap to the center or midpoint). Finally, ensure that you snap to the right edge. if the polygon does not snap to the edges, you will not be able to subtract the parts that you do not want.

Hi Jonathon, Great tutorial. I'm on Vwx 2020 and it doesn't have a option to create multiple viewports. Am I doing something wrong, or is the feature somewhere else now?
@archoncad4 жыл бұрын
Usually, the option is on the top right of the drawing window. I tend to use the “M” key, which is the shortcut. If you are using Vectorworks Fundamentals, it might not be in the workspace. Hi, When I try to move the window back into the wall with Move by Points tool, the window does move deeper into the wall but it also moves from it's original location. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help most appreciated. Robert
@archoncad5 жыл бұрын
I do not understand why you are using the move by points tool on the window. The Move By Points tool is great for moving a window object that is in a wall. This movie is about fast 3D modelling without using standard architectural objects. If you are able to move the window using that tool, watch out for the plane you are working on. Use automatic working planes to find the face of the wall and move the window along the wall. I hope that helps.
@TheBBDEE5 жыл бұрын
@@archoncad Thanks, Jonathan. I realize this is free form modeling however at approx. 10:30 into Pat 2, you use the Move By Points to sink the window deeper into the "wall". I think you click on the corner of the window object and then click on the midpoint of the bottom of the door frame. For you, the window sinks into the wall. For me the window moves down to the midpoint at the base of the door frame. It's a trifle but I just wanted to figure out how to sink it deeper into the wall without moving it to the midpoint reference at the base of the door frame. :-/
@archoncad5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBBDEE OK. I see now. I had forgotten that I had done that. If you look carefully, you will see that I use the edge of the door frame to move the window deeper into the wall. Using those two points controls the direction of the move, forcing the window deeper into the wall. you could use the a face of the wall that is in the same direction as the move you want, that would work, but you can't use random parts of the wall. If you use the face of the wall adjacent to the window, the window will move along the wall, not into it.

Greetings Mr. Pickup; I find these tutorials very well put together and engaging. I am a draftsman that needs to upgrade my software skills for the current employment market. I have used AutoCAD Civil Land Desktop for years and I am looking for recommendations for software package that I can use to render residential architectural, site plans, and steel fabrication shop drawings with ortho views. I am used to working in model space and views in paper space. Would Vectorworks be a good choice??
@archoncad5 жыл бұрын
I think Vectorworks is a good choice. I am biased though, i have been teaching Vectorworks for over 25 years and i have yet to work on a project where Vectorworks let me down. All CAD and BIM programs require substantial learning.

Hi Jonathan, When I try to create my roof, as your do in this tutorial, using the poly tool, you say find the mid point and go up to 30%...I seem to loose the midpoint here and the roof is off centre, is there a setting that may be off on my end....I have played around and can't seem to find the easy fix! Thanks for your help and great videos!
