I notice that the D doesn't sound as clear or as strong as the C. I've noticed that when I play my clarinet as well. Is that just a quirk of the instrument? And how can you try to equalize that, especially in slow passages?

Yes, I think this is coming across worse in the recording than normal, but I find that especially my C is quite bright, so the D by comparison often sounds kind of dull. This a quirk of the instrument, and no matter how great the instrument is there will always be differences in the evenness of notes. The inconsistency in resistance from note to note is part of why long tones are so important. When we practice long tones we learn what each note feels like and our subconscious brain quickly figures out what we need to do to get all the notes to match. Playing any passage as long tones with an emphasis on matching note to note will train your brain to do what is necessary to get everything to match.
