Stuck seatposts in carbon frames can and do happen. Here are some tips on what causes it, how to remove the post and how to avoid this in the first place.

could the grit in fiber paste abrade the anodized finish of a seatpost? would promote corrosion? or would a simple reapplication solve the problem?

If the inside surface of the frame is not precisely controlled as in a bladder molded frame how do they get the inside of the seat tube precise enough to fit the seatpost? Aluminium sleeve?

If you dont have dry ice. Use your C02 cartridges sinces it is effectively the same and very cold. Probably beats freeze spray.

I salute you sir. Thanks so much for this tip. I used 3 CO2 cartridges to cool the seat post than persuaded it with some firm blows with my hands... And presto. It came loose.

A can of freeze spray from your local hardware shop or plumbing supply a better option . Just use some foam pipe insulation as a sleeve and keep it cold. Kits are available.

This is something that goes around my head, as a track rider I'm very attracted to carbon handlebars, are they safe? there are a few like Easton EC90, Alpina, 3t scatto, look and the generic Chinese ones. If possible to make a review about them will be very good for the whole track community. Also track frames are supposed to be stiffer so, what would be the difference between track and road frames (if possible a cut up). Thanks for your great information.

Track stuff is usually built stronger as weight is not much of an issue. Good products should be safe to use.

My upper cap from the headset is stuck with the carbon fork after a crash. I already tried to "hammer" it out but it doesn't come off. I guess the upper cap is alloy or metal and the fork carbon. I also heated up the whole thing but it doesn't work... Any other ideas before I cut off the fork :-(?

I've seen silicon spray, armour all.in fact used to penetrate and free a stuck ppst

Is galvanic corrosion a reaction between aluminium and carbon composite? Or is it just something aluminium does in the presence of moisture?

Galvanic corrosion is the corrosion of different materials on the galvanic scale in contact with an electrolyte, in simple terms a battery. Al and carbon are at different ends of the scale so the result is more than materials closer to each other.

If you freeze the seatpost and frame, will the carbon not become brittle (and more vulnerable) during the operation to get the seatpost out?

Depending on the resin, yes, however if done correctly you should not have to force it, infact you should not force it anytime.

Heating will expand the aluminium which will make it tighter, and over about 120 C depending on resin it could even be lower will damage the resin. I would avoid heat.

I was actually asking about assembly with carbon post in Alu frame, rather than trying to get a stuck post out. Is it best to use normal grease or a carbon paste. Opinions seem to be divided on this.

I had a stuck aluminium post in an aluminium frame. Drilled hole through the post, put a LARGE nail in the post. One guy held the nail and two guys 'unscrewed' the frame from the post

Simple way which worked for me is to turn bike upside down hold frame in hand and use decent sized rubber mallet and hit the setpost clamp under the seat preferably inline with the bolt.

I prefer not to hit a lightweight frame with any hammer.

@@LuescherTeknik only hit the seat clamp not frame just hold onto the frame in your hand why you hit the clamp with rubber mallet from underneath the seat.

Yes, it happens. Mine is stuck, carbon in carbon. I can move it a little with a cork hammer, but I prefer not to. If I want to remove it, I can heat the carbon on the frame with a heatgun a little and remove it that way.

Yes, the clear coat can act as an adhesive and stick the surfaces together.

There are lots of variable with manufacture, as with most things, however you bikes can be a bit like fashion, so cost does not always equal tghe best quality.

with the freezer technique, couldn't it loosen other aluminium parts like alu bearing seats and threaded inserts? What are your thoughts on GCN's video on this, where they recommend pouring boiling water onto the carbon frame... for anyone using the dry ice method, for the love of all things holy WEAR THICK GLOVES!!! (ideally leather gardening gloves). Dry ice is so cold it will freeze and stick to the moisture on your skin and give you a really painful cold burn!

Good tip, I haven't seen the GCN video, I don't want to nag everything they do, however hot wet is typically not ideal for epoxy. With the inserts typically the adhesive bonding the inserts has enough flex to absorb the change, however it could disbond it if extreme. It would be possible to rebond it and save the frame, where if you can't move the seatpost or brake the frame trying it is a bigger deal. So could be the lesser of two evils.

Lots of variables with this, an aircraft flies at -50 C and then it can be 70 + C on the tarmac in the middle east.

Very very important: If you use dry ice, do it outside. Alternatively, a very well ventilated shop. Stay alive!
