Scary. If I have to use coin cell batteries for a project, I almost always use those plastic through-hole CR2032 holders. They work great.

Last time I tried to spot-weld a 2032 and made holes in three of them. Then I used a battery holder, soldered wires on that and wrapped everything in insulation tape 😀

Well yeah. What you don't show is how long the soldering iron was in contact with it. Properly cleaned and fluxed and using a quick hand with good technique, it's entirely possible to solder to a coin cell without it getting anywhere _near_ that hot. Definitely worth a warning to be careful, but the blanket statement NEVER to do it is incorrect.

Boy do these make one hell of a bang. I emptied a waste paper basket into the fireplace that had one of these lurking in the bottom of it. Went off like 30 minutes later and damn near made me deaf. Made lots of really pretty colors afterwards, tho!

I found that out the hard way. I've worn hearing aids since I was a kid. They used these small 1.4 v button cells (type 675). I made an FM transmitter from a kit and wanted to see how small I could make it. Tried soldering to the little battery with my 150 watt Weller soldering gun. First one worked fine, soldering to the larger piece on the back took more heat and it just took off. I found half of it, never found the other part. This was mercury cell days too, so I got a good whiff. :(
@PlaywithJunk

I know those mercury cells well. I used to squeeze them open to collect the mercury. There was quite an amount in such a small battery. Childhood memories....😉

Well, a CR2032 can provide 225 mAh at around 2.8 V, which is 0.63 Wh = 2268 J = 542 calories of energy. With 1 calorie you can heat 1 gram of water by 1 K, so 500 calories can heat 5 grams of water (5 ml, or 1 tsp) from 0 C to 100 C. A CR2032 has a 20 mm diameter and 3.2 mm thickness, which is 4.021 ml. That's mostly steel, which takes about 0.5 J/gK to heat, but is about 8x as dense as water, so volumetrically it's about 4 J/(ml K) (same as water). Inside the cell is typically a LiClO4 anode, MnO2 cathode, and a PC/DME electrolyte, but I'm not going into how those react to heating.

heating a liquid in a sealed container.... what else did you expect? If you REALLY have to solder a connection to a battery, use a low temperature solder (like 80°C). In all other cases use a battery holder, point welder or conductive glue....

It's all about transferring heat energy into the cell where it can't leave. Those tabs are thin enough that they solder easily, and also don't transfer heat quickly.

@smug_cat1
@smug_cat1 24 күн бұрын
@PlaywithJunk So, first off, there is no reason why you should solder a wire on for several seconds Second, I'm not saying batteries can't do that. They will do that. But before that, they will massively degrade. So it's counterintuitive to heat the battery that long. You can definitely solder wires to batteries. Before that you need to know what you are doing at least and have the proper equipment. Acid based flux A hot af iron And lastly pre tined wire Edit: And yeah, obviously tab batteries are way better, and a welder is much better for this kind of work. But if you have no other option, a soldering iron isn’t horrible if you know what you’re doing. Yes, it can degrade the battery, so minimizing heat exposure is important. Using a tab is, of course, the better option, but it’s not the end of the world, and it won’t blow your hands off if you do it the right way.

Not a good idea. Even soldering to nickle strips, hanging off batteries scare me. I prefer the mentioned spot welder at the end. Using a 555 driving a mosfet bank can achieve a makeshift safer way.

@PlaywithJunk 24 күн бұрын
@@ProfessorBidoof Of course it's doable... but still dangerous. And just because the chinese do it doesn't mean it's good practise or safe. It's a different thing when soldering tabs are spotwelded to the battery. But soldering directly to the battery is not good and dangerous, no matter of the chemistry.
