Total unconcerned arrogance from Toyota to make it this difficult to change the ATF fluid, not even providing a dipstick. They don't care about their customers. Oh yeah, I forgot according to them, they have "lifetime" fluid. What BS.

thank you very much for this video! I had never seen it heard anything of the like this until recently, on my girlfriends 08 Avalon. I have owned 1 Chevy and 5 Nissans (not cvt ones, regular a/t) and all have had a dipstick and very easy to service and manual says to change it every 30k to 40k. My brother's 06 Altima is the same way with well over 100k miles and fluid changed regularly. My one frontier has over 220k on it still shifting great. All running with no trans issues. On her Avalon, I originally backed away from changing the fluid because Toyota says it's not necessary. Well yesterday I was backing it into the garage and the transmission started slipping so badly the rpms raised and the car stopped moving totally. then I tried to pull it out back out and drive and it wouldn't even go and drive so I put it in park and let it just run for a minute and then it would go again. It has been shifting weird and she said it was very lagging and seemed to be slipping lately. This car was bought new by the family in 2008 and has had a very easy life with only 88,000 miles on it. I'm going to try changing the fluid and see if that helps it, hopefully it does.

Just remember this is not a fluid change or flush. This is what is considered a "drain and fill" only. By doing this repeatedly is better than not changing at all . However, does not get the trans cleared of contaminated fluid. There is an alternative wherein the trans can be pumped utilizing the motor to drive the fluid out via the trans cooling line. Removing 3-4 qts at a time, re-filling pan with the same amount as removed until the fluid runs clean. Finally checking fluid level as required. If there were no prior leaks and trans was properly filled prior adding the same amount as you remove is sufficient -- but still should be verified level is correct. Also note most service centers will quote you a transmission flush but you will only be provided one "drain and fill" which can be highway robbery. Especially when your transmission capacity is approximately 13 quarts max.

Trans, Torque Converter, and Radiator-cooler can be flushed ALL IN ONE STEP, -- but it would seem prudent that when set-up, start engine (and engage trans for some models) for a TWO QUART dispense; turn engine off and add two quarts; and repeat -- rather than gallon or larger intervals. -- This is an excellent approach and should give excellent results!

For anyone pondering how many times to do this, this is how much new fluid you'll have after each drain-and-fill when only replacing 2 qts of the 6.9 qt capacity 1st: 29% new 2nd: 50% new 3rd: 64.5% new 4th: 75% new 5th: 82% new 6th: 87% new 7th: 91% new

@@SpiritTracker7 If you only drain 2.0 of the 6.9 qt capacity, you'll only be draining 29% of it. Once you've refilled it and start the car, the new fluid and the existing fluid will fully mix within minutes. That's why you will never be able to completely drain the old fluid. Never, ever, ever. (If you were to do that 1000x you'd still have a few drops of the original fluid in place!) To improve the fluid via repeated drain-and-fills you just continually dilute the old fluid with newer fluid. If it's been a long time since the fluid was new, and/or it's blackish in color, it's best to do one drain-and-fill and drive it for several weeks to make sure the detergents in the new fluid haven't knocked loose any major crud. Do that repeatedly every few weeks until the overall fluid is once again reddish in color (and that will depend on how black it was to begin with...I've seen medium-brown fluid turn red after only replacing 1/2 of the overall fluid with newer fluid.) ATF has a lot of detergent that puts dirt and extremely small debris into suspension, and each drain-and-fill will remove more and more of it. Too much new fluid (and its detergents) all at once in a dirty transmission may knock stuff loose, get somewhere that causes trouble, and then you've lost a gear or your transmission.

@@SpiritTracker7 If you feel up to it, do it with your first drain-and-fill. It's not difficult, but sometimes pan bolts can be difficult to get to. A simple drain-and-fill, OTOH, is as easy as an oil change (assuming you have a dipstick....if you don't, collect all the drained fluid and measure it with a 32 oz kitchen cup so you can replace the exact same amount). Be careful as to how to measure the fluid level. Most makes with a dipstick require you to check it while running, while others, like some Hondas, want you to shut the engine off for a small amount of time and then gives you a narrow time window to check it.

Easy... these transmissions hold about 9-10qts of oil... but when you do only a "drain & fill".. only about 2 1/2 qts are removed at a time. Some people do a drain an fill 3 times a weekend, some do it once a weekend for 3 weekends... and that's how you can cycle out all the older fluid without doing a damaging flush immediately.

It is really important to keep the engine running because that will cause the torque converter to suck up the fluid. Just to test this, I over filled by 0.25 quart. With the engine off, 3/4 quart came out. With the engine running, only 1/4 quart came out which meant that the torque converter is using that 1/2 quart. Also, if you overfill it a little bit, you can measure the fluid temperature with a meat thermometer (besides the pan temperature). BTW, I would never use generic ATF fluid. Always use Toyota WS fluid. Why? see this chart showing the much lower viscosity of the Toyota WS: @t

Just as an interesting note (and to point out how much conflicting info one can run onto when researching how to do this), the back label on the Toyota WS fluid states: *Add only when transmission is cold.*

That is interesting, maybe to ensure a fairly consistent rise in temperature for all the fluid before the final drain-off of the excess.

Thank you for the video. May i kindly recommend wearing nitrile gloves ? We don't know what those chemicals do to our bodies. I appreciate the technique of not going out and buying a scanner to monitor temp with. Thanks again !

I don't mess with that temp stuff. Simply empty all fluid, measure output and fill same amount. I have six cars that include sequoia tundra and lexus gx470 all over 200k, the gx470 is 318k runs perfect

What about the fluid that is not measured....like the fluid on your tools, your hands, on the rags, etc. I would think you would end up being somewhat short.

shame its not a Honda. 3 quarts drained amd 3 back in every oil change.Simple. Do it a few times the fluid will be bright red. Use DW1 which is cheap though.

Best video on the cheek plug yet. Since Toyota doesn’t specify interval in my manual from what I’ve read I’ll just adopt the Honda 30k drain and fill I suppose.

I asked about the drain and fill interval at three Toyota dealerships in North Carolina, and I have received an identical response to my question. Basically, all of the dealerships' personnel I talked to told me that these transmissions are non-serviceable. They said it is the lifetime transmission and the fluid should not be changed or flushed. When I asked them to clarify to me what lifetime means according to Toyota's terms, silence followed. None of those I talked to dared to answer my question. To cut long story short, it seems very reasonable that this WS ATF deteriorates as the time (miles) goes by and that transmission needs new ATF periodically. I have in plan to drain and fill at every 30,000 miles using Amsoil ATF and to change the filter and clean two magnets once when my vehicle reaches 60,000 miles. I wish my vehicle had the ATF dipstick, which would make my job a piece of cake.

​@@SPQRCenturion1976 There is no such thing as lifetime fluid. The dealers / Toyota define lifetime as in the average time owners keep the car - usually about 60-100k and then they trade it in and get rid of it. I keep my vehicles much longer and maintain them myself. I do a drain and fill of the transmission pan at every oil change. It's quick, cheap, and easy and guarantees my transmission has good fluid at all times. Also note those same dealers are glad to sell you Toyota WS fluid at very high markups all day long.

If you are very brave, after the pan is drained run the car briefly in park and some more fluid will come out. I got 96 ounces instead of 57. But this is the torque converter draining probably and I can't decide if it's actually a good idea or not. And that fluid was more dirty than the fluid in the pan. And I used maxlife and will keep using it. Maxlife says it meets WS and it's full synthetic. It's been great in my S10, my honda accord and all my subarus.

great job i liked it! do you have to have both wheels up in the air or one, when doing the last part which is just draining the fill tube? i am thinkin about just sliding in there with both wheels on the ground so its an accurate level car and the fill tube will drain the rite amount? thanks!

For those who want a complete fluid exchange vs an approx 40% pan exchange, the following 2007 RAV4 approach SHOULD be applicable to Most makes and models: 1.) Remove the plastic shield under the front of the vehicle. Note, new assorted plastic push-clips are recommended. 2.) The radiator cooler transmission fluid out-fall is on the drivers side approx 3/4" OD, 3/8" ID rubber hose with spring clasp clamp -- EASY to see and access! 3.) Disconnect the hose and attach an extension line to a translucent 1gal jug in an catch pan (for overflow/spills). 4.) The steel return line may drip into a second catch pan. 5.) Snuggly attach a clear extension line to the dip-stick tube with a funnel. (I inserted a clear plastic kitchen "baster" keeping the refill level from overflowing at top of the "baster"/funnel). 6.) Start the engine and put in gear (automatic) until approx 1/2 gal OLD is collected and turn off engine. 7.) Fill approx 1/2 gal NEW. 8.) Repeat for approx 2 1/2 gals until bright pink is dispensing. 9.) Reattach radiator/trans Return line. 10.) Adjust fluid level to the low side of the "Cold" mark on dip-stick (so you can top-off to the Hot mark). 11.) Drive vehicle until transmission is up to approx 115 deg. F and adjust fluid level to "Hot" mark. 12.) Reattach the plastic shield using new plastic push-pins. 13.) This should replace the Trans, Torque Converter, and Radiator Cooler with ALL New Fluid. NOTE: For Sealed transmissions attach an extension line with funnel to the steel Return line (instead of the non-existent "dip-stick tube"). Happy motoring!

I got a 2015 Yaris CVT here in the UK,no need to remove the wheel and splash guard,there is room from the top of engine.It took 2.2L and my straw was yellow. I filled it up using a hose on a funnel from under the hood,like what the college kids do "Chugging" beer,just some info for anyone out there. I marked the bolt before removing with black touch up paint,so i know how far to tighten it back up.

Vehicle supposed to be running while you opening drain valve... if it comes out it, will come out. if it's not you ! have to add a little bit more

The drain plug has a washer on it to be replaced... a NEW one is cheap and any leakage of ATF can be VERY cost;y. Get a new plug washer and a new gasket to install after the pan is removed and cleaned and before filling with fresh ATF.

Ditch the red straw by throwing it in the trash. Just measure how much fluid drained out when the engine is cold in a graduated container and put the same amount of fluid back in. Make sure the new fluid going in is the same temp as what came out by leaving it outside with the vehicle over night.

Your method will certainly work assuming the transmission fluid level is proper to begin with, an assumption with some risks. It is also not practical if one is conducting multiple drain and fills as one job.

@armchairtin-kicker503 You shouldn't do multiple drain and fills as one job. You need to drive a few hundred miles in between drain and fills to get the new fluid into the torque converter. And yes, I was talking about tranny cases that aren't wet and leaking.

World-Standard Compatible Transmission Fluid on the label says 'not for CVT'. can we still use it for Corolla, as it has CVT? Thank you.

@@VinayakGovande No. CVT needs different ATF. Valvoline has a specific ATF for CVT. Or amsoil, if you don't mind paying more.

@@5MinuteFixit The Tail shaft seal can leak, along with a line, as well as the pan gasket. Known for reliability will not cut it when the Tranny is cooked. Plus, the fact most don't change it, as they call it 'lifetime' fluid so they are out to SELL transmissions. UNLESS they put a WARRANTY on it saying if it leaked (we will fix it if it burns up) which they never would.

If you remove the bottom and filter, more fluid will come out. You will be able to change about 4 qts out of 6.9. (Toyota Camry).

Not if you do it right. Never changing the fluid is really bad. Letting jackboots from from some shop do a flush is bad and they will probably screw it up.

Still relevant in 2022 on my 2011 Toyota. Great Video and helped clarify the process. How do you explain the amount of fluid that came out the first time you pulled the bolt on the pan? Was it overfilled and stayed that way? Mine had almost a 3/4 of quart come out. Then after removing the straw another 2 quarts. After filling up with 3 quarts and heating up to 96F at the pan and removing the drain bolt it drained about 2 quarts without removing the straw. I will do this again in a year. Car has 130K miles. Dealer did the first change at 65K.

I noticed you only jacked up the driver side and put jack stand under. Did you need to level the car since the remaining 3 wheels on the floor before proceeding the atf swap ? Also once atf meet require temperature, did we need to keep the car running as we let the extra fluid out ?

Yes the vehicle needs to be running and the jack stands are under both sides (try to get the vehicle as level as possible) I usually leave the jack under for another layer of protection when I’m under the vehicle. I have heard you should not use a laser temperature gun because it only measures the outside temperature. Instead you should use a an OB II scanner or even a meat thermometer to directly measure the temperature of the actual fluid and not just the pan

If you heat it up maybe 7-10 minutes prior to the procedure and then do the draining.. around 4 quarts should come out. And doing that every 60K should suffice and the transmission will outlast the vehicle.

Not true. Hot or cold roughly 2-2.5 quarts comes out in most Toyota’s. At least most videos I have seen as well as my Highlander

Would this video work for a 2016 Rav4? My car has almost 100,000 miles on my transmission has been feeling funny the last couple of days so I need to do this but dont feel like paying toyota an arm, leg, a virgin sacrifice and my first born son just to be able to get it done 🤣

The Lexus service bulletin for the U660F and E says check at normal operating temperature of 185-194. How are people getting 104-113F. Every manual I’ve seen states 185-194F

because most car that came to the dealer has already fully warmed up. So toyota release a new bulletin along with a longer tube that specifically measure for 185-194F. The plastic tube that came with the vehicle is designed for 104-113F

Question how’s your transmission doing. Any problems ? There’s a scan tool on amazon that’ll tell you when it reaches 104-112. I have that laser pointer was told not to use that. Wanted to get your opinion far as how Is your transmission doing ?

hey thats pretty simple!! why r the dealers saying that us DIY people are not allowed to service transmissions at home anymore I have a 2009 camry that i'll have to get rid of when i finish school... so might have to get a newer one later with no dipstick. just hope ill have easy access to those cooler lines so i can flush the fluid too. I'm always a die hard toyota fan though.

Looks like you didn’t get a reply. What he is trying to get across is that the transmission fluid capacity is roughly 3 times what can be drained out from the pan each time you remove the plug and the straw. So, in order to get a majority of fluid out you’ll need to accomplish this procedure two or three times after the initial drain and fill.

Bradley C this method is if you don’t want to drop the transmission pan. Therefore you are basically diluting the old fluid with the new fluid you are replacing it with so each time you do it you are replacing a percentage of the fluid. Hi, thanks for the informative video. One question, do I need to check the temperature if I change the fluid at normal room temp, letting the car sit in the garage over night then jack it up, drain all the fluids out and measure exactly how much it drained out. Then fill it back in the exact amount? That way I save myself $150 from buying the temp gun. Thanks!

thats what im planning to do even through i have a temp gun, its better to put exact amount back in since theres no way more would get inside it. Worst case theres maybe slight less than when it had fluids since new.

Thanks foe the explanatory video once again. There seems to be much emphasis on getting exact fluid back into transmission after the drain. I wish to ask: what exactly happens if fluid is overfilled. What happens when more fluid is filled back in than the fluid taken out? Will this cause a serious transmission failure? Or will everything still work normally.

So sorry to bother you again. I have a problem with my ‘05 V8 4Runner. I noticed the transmission started behaving strangely during a long trip. So I parked in the nearest safe location. Looked under the hood and saw fluid oozing, which I traced to the twin pipes(under the radiator) bearing transmission fluid to and from the trans cooler (in front of the radiator). For the transmission to have started behaving strange, I believe significant volume of fluid must have been lost. Now, I do not know the exact volume to refill neither do I know how to check the level after a refill. I have bought 2pcs of 4 liter Toyota ATF WS. I will greatly appreciate if anyone can provide information as to where/how to check the level of this sealed transmission system as there is no dip stick. I am not an auto engineer but have some basic experience with Toyota 4Runners(I have owned 3 3rd gens. But this sealed transmission). I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP OR ANY SHOP.

Both your engine and transmission is designed for a normal level of oil. Having your crankshaft or gear box swimming in oil may not be that good. However too low will cause wear and possibly failure. When the pan drain plug was initially removed a half quart or less came out. This tells me a half quart in the drain pan is OK.

Nice video. Does anyone know if a dealership service would replace the entire quantity of ATF? I'm sure they charge a lot for it. However, given that the DIY method drains so little from the pan each time means a large number of changes are needed to "fully" exchange the old fluid, then wondering if the total cost of ATF may be comparable to the repair shop service.

I just had my 2020 Toyota Camry XLE 4 cylinder transmission fluid changed .It has very low mileage on it. The dealership said they did a flush which means the whole entire amount was changed and refilled . The total cost was $291 and I received a $100 coupon from the dealership a week before and decided I would use it. I always do any maintenance way ahead of time.

@@abedzantout6980 he means by doing training feels you have to do it multiple times to essentially remove all of the old fluid and replace it with a new fluid.

If you’re really interested in getting it all, just remove the hose that comes from the external ATF cooler and goes back into the transmission. Pipe that goes into a bucket that is clearly labeled so you can see the amount that is pumped out. Turn on the car and pump 2 quarts out. Turn off the car. Refill with two new quarts. Repeat this process two or three times and you will have replaced the entire amount. Very simple process.

​@@condor5635 I used this method several times, work like a charm. Just pull the fuel pump fuse to prevent the engine from starting. That help to slow the fluid flow....keep adding new fluid to the tranny.

Hi, on the final drain at around 5:00, does the car engine need to be running in Park? Also, I don't have Temp Gun and car cannot be level, can I just perform a Drain and Fill (2.xx quart out and 2.xx quart in when cold), in theory, it should be the same thing, right? Thanks for the video.

What you said in theory should work but the only way to guarantee that there is a correct amount in the transmission is by checking it while in the temperature range for your specific transmission. Completely depends on your driving conditions. The manufacturers will tell you that you can go crazy, insane amount of miles in between ATF changes with some even using idiotic statements now like "the ATF is good for the life of the car" which basically translates to "The ATF is good until your car break$ down right after your warranty expire$ and then you have to come to use for a new transmi$$ion and miscellaneous part$". Yeah um... NO don't play their game. lf you mainly do city driving change your ATF every 30,000 miles. lf you do a 50/50 mix of city/hwy you can go to 45,000 miles. lf you do 100% hwy miles you can take it to 60,000 miles but keep an eye on the fluid color and smell after 50,000 miles of all hwy and if it starts getting too dark and/or burned smell, change it out before you hit the 60k mark.

There is a transmission thermostat bypass you are supposed to pin open with a smaller hex wrench, this way when you pull the inner straw it drains the cooler inside the radiator as well...usually when you do that, you get approx 4 quarts per drain out rather than just 2~ quarts However EXCELLENT post and showing how to change fluid on a sealed Toyota Sienna transmission! If you pin open the thermostat and get out more fluid, will you need to keep the pin in the thermostat open when you refill with approx 4 quarts and run the engine? I'm concerned about the air gap caused by a closed thermostat and the possible air cavitation, thanks!

Hello! You have changed only part of the oil. For a complete change, repeat this several times until the oil is light. Remove the pan and change the filter is also necessary.

Yes at the end of the video I state you have to repeat this process 2-3 more times to get a majority of the fluid changed, this is for people that do not wish to drop the pan and change the filter. Thanks for watching!

I believe it is an 18mm ID aluminum crush washer.

In order to level the vehicle, it is better to use four jack stands, not two. First, place chocks on a rear wheel, jack up the front and place jack stands. Then Jack up the rear and place jack stands. Reverse the procedure to lower vehicle to the ground. (Personally I prefer ESCO 10499 Low Profile Performance Jack Stands along with DEDC Universal Aluminum Grooved Magnetic Jack Pads. They are not cheap, but they are certainly dependable. They also facilitate tire rotations.)

Just to add something to this great vid. The one thing that can be a problem is the 6MM hex drain plug. I'm sure toyota chose this size so as not to over torque the plug. However over years this can get significantly corroded and the 6MM hex hole will just strip when trying to remove it even though I used a rust buster type of solvent to help with this issue. In this case a good pair of Channel Locks and few gentle taps with a mallet is your friend. A big pair of vice grips would work too. Also in my case I measured 62 ounces of fluid drained. Hope this helps.

A little over that. But if you want to completely drain and refill you have to repeat the process 2-3 times, maybe more.

so after checking the temperature how do you know if its underfilled or overfilled? if its at the right temperature thats the right level?

Can you open the tube that takes atf to the coolant, let it drain out as you add more fluid. And there by flushing the whole system?

I wanted to find out about the Toyota Yaris 2013 when opened the screw By the time the oil meter comes out, oil will be poured out and it can reduce the amount of chalk transmission?, Chalk testing was done only for a general need and not for any other problem The color of the oil itself is bright red which I guess is good. If this is a mistake and because of this it is necessary to completely change the gear oil.?😨, The test itself for a car in a licensed Toyota Israel garage but that does not mean that the test is correct that's why I need your recommendation tnx.

A decent OB2 scan tool should be enough to monitor trans fluid temp.

@@usailbzhang a scan tool that can monitor simple real time data from the ecu should suffice. A cheap code reader will not do it.

be careful when you do this. Most ppl who do this DYI underfill their transmission fluid. Put little more than what you eyeball to be safe.
