+Kamsorn Than, there is really no way to tell how much fluid should be in your transmission without connecting Scan tool and reading temperature and draining extra. Unless someone else online have performed ATF fluid change on the same car as yours and measured and posted results online. Because I don't know if 5 quarts is too much or just perfect.
@jjl85116 жыл бұрын
For me, I think the $150 scanner is just too expensive for DIYers. Since you have the tool, can you show us the correlation between a infrared scanner and the scangauge. Maybe, let the car idle for 5 or 10 min to warm up the transmission, and measure both readings. I assume they would all be warmed up and the oil pan should reach equilibrium easily (because it's metal) with the warm fluid inside. As the they both cool down, can you draw a plot figure with time on x axis, and temperature of scangauge/infrared on y axis? If they are not too off, like scangauge shows 114, and infrared shows 105, I think that can save me $150. Thanks.

I successfully finished first transmission fluid drain and replace procedure on Lexus RX 350 2016 @60,000 miles using Amsoil Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. To be safe I purchased 8 quarts of fluid. This video is excellent thank you Mr. Repairvehicle! I just wanted to point out something new. For 2016 RX 350 you will need T40 for outer drain bolt then you will need 17mm hex to remove overflow straw tube assembly. Always remove your fill bolt first before draining using 24mm socket. First draining yielded about 3.4 quarts. So I filled with 3.4 then took car for test drive using all transmission modes. Second draining also yielded slightly discolored fluid about the same 3.4 quarts came out. So I filled again with 3.6 then using Scangauge II with car running and leveled I opened outer drain bolt and about half quart of fluid was drained in excess. After transmission fluid temperature #1 reading hit 104F I fastened the T40 bolt to reseal transmission pan. So in conclusion I have 1 quart extra Amsoil just in case I need. The car runs amazing! Same as it did before but now with new synthetic fluid :)

This is hands down the best diy video that I've seen for this procedure. I used to work for toyota and I liked everything in this video, the only thing I would have done differently is at 12:06 I usually let the trickle of atf turn into more of a drip before putting the plug in as this shows that the level of of the fluid is truly meeting the tip of the red check tube. If there is still a stream the level is still technically too high but I doubt it's high to the point where it will hurt anything.

Yikes! I have thought of allowing the dealership to perform this service on my tacoma. Since a person cannot monitor how they do it, then it is impossible to see if the technician does it properly, and transmissions without the right amount of fluid can appear to be fine for a period that makes it past the warranty period. In fact, they could say they perform it and never even perform the service at all; and without checking you may never know.

Thanks for detailed instructions, this really helped me out doing drain and fill on 2013 Lexus ES350 with 58k miles. I ordered 7 quarts of amsoil SS ATF and drained cold WS fluid removing overflow tube, 2 full quarts came out, then I filled 2 quarts and installed just the drain plug without the tube, I ran engine for 5 minutes shifting gears into R and D, then I turned off engine and drained fluid and repeated the same procedure with filling in another 2 quarts, then I filled final 3 quarts, installed back the overflow tube and waited for trans temp to cool, I was using Techstream software on my laptop, it came free with $15 Ebay cable purchase. Once the ATF temp cooled to under 100 degrees I started the engine and started final drain at 105 degrees, when I was done the ATF temp was at 110. My car now drives like it was meant to be driven, before Amsoil ATF change I could hear a whining sound right before the gear changes coming from what I thought was the engine but now I know it was the transmissions torque converter not getting the friction it needed from the poor quality WS fluid which looked brownish red. Now my car feels like a powerhouse and very smooth. I would definitely recommend Amsoil SS fuel efficient ATF, I really love it!

@markg9994 жыл бұрын
Yeah how much came out on your final drain using the tube? It would appear that just adding the extra quart you loose most of the extra quart. Seems like on a cold motor draining 2 quarts and then replacing with 2 quarts would be likely have you where you want to be.

@@repairvehicle No worries my question was for the original person that left the comment. Seems like you do lose a good amount of that extra fluid even from your video I see. I'm thinking of removing when warm to get most out then mark the amount removed then let sit overnight see how much the fluid drops when room temp and just adding that amount back in. My guess it drops 10% in volume at room temp. Why didnt Toyota make straw height lower for room temp fluid...didnt want shade tree mechanics I guess.

I did this yesterday and it worked PERFECTLY!!!!!! My 2012 Camry has felt like "it's slipping" upon the first drive of the day. Forward or reverse, for quite a while. In the "olden days" this usually indicated that the trans fluid was low. This has been happening since I had the trans serviced by the local Toyota dealer at 100K miles, it now has 172K. And the bastards charged me almost 500 bucks to have this done! Anyways.....the car recently threw a MIL. Upon checking it with a ScanTool 3140 it came back with 2 transmission errors. Something about a 4th gear servo and a error with a OD solenoid related to the torque converter. Sounds to me like dirty or dead trans fluid. Wow, a replacement trans is $3500.00!!!! So I did this fix using 3 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife ATF. I already have a ScanGage in my Tundra, so I used that for the fluid temps. 3 quarts was perfect! After the warm up about a 1/4 of a quart came out and then it was buttoned up. Codes are gone and the weird surging and what felt like a miss in high gears (usually lugging the car a little) are GONE!!!!! Thanks repairvehicle !!!! Nice to see a simple practical method for checking fluid levels on sealed Toyotas. The video at WeberAuto for Toyota Transaxle Fluid Level Check - No Dipstick is like a 4 hour job (for me), and I don't have the vacuum pump and other exotic tools. This sealed transmission concept is engineering nightmare. If they want to give us a sealed transmission, give a OBDII scan read out on the level, or better yet, a gauge with level and temp. I like synthetic as it has better properties. Will have to see if it meets Toyota ATF M-V (Type 5) requirements.

Thanks for the instructions. I used this information to better understand all that is involved. I decided to keep things simple. I just got finished replacing the transmission oil that drained out. I drained from the cold transmission, measured the exact quantity by filling the oil into a 2 litter clear juice container, then I used another exact juice container to fill new oil to the exact same height. I refilled the transmission with this quantity , it was about 1.5 litres. I will probably go through this routine at each oil change. The 2010 RX 350 has 107 000km and looked dirty but not too bad, could still make out that it was red when some dripped on my hand. I used the toyota WS fluid as it is only $7.50 Canadian , half the price of the Amsoil, plus I don't like mixing fluid types.

Ambient air temperature around the outside of the transmission would effect the surface temp of the transmission. I am sure there is a consistent air temp and exterior temp that could be matched up to the right fluid temperature inside. It would take a lot of work to discover what the variances are. Since ambient temperatures can be all over the map, it would have to be an unreliable way of servicing the fluid. If a person used the scan gauge to check the fluid level is at 105 degrees, then they could measure ambient air temp, then use infrared measurement of the surface of the transmission and then document the 3 temperatures in a no-wind environment. You would have to recreate the perfect ambient temperature with no wind for a given surface temperature to be an accurate way of knowing when the fluid level can be checked upon servicing. When you see all the factors created to make an accurate surface temperature, then you can see why using the scan gauge is the easiest way to be certain of the fluid temperature.

I just did my ATF drain/fill on my 2011 Camry LE 2.5L 4 cyl based on this video. It went pretty smoothly but I have some concerns. First, when reinstalling the plastic level check tube, I did not encounter any resistance as you did. It just screwed all the way in easily with oily fingers. I even turned on it VERY gently with a small ratchet, and it was clearly seated. After the drain, about 2 1/4 quarts came out just as with yours. What was very different - unless I got something wrong - is that the temp range for setting the ATF level on this vehicle is 185 - 194 F... way hotter than your 104 F for some reason. I got this temp range from the Toyota dealer. In 3 distinct places in their service manual, it mentions getting the trans temp to this range. It was hard to get it this hot! I pretty much had to leave it in drive with the brake on from time to time. I did the initial drain at 185 F and the final (level set) drain once again at 185 F. When I opened the drain plug the final time, I let it slow to a weak dribble then closed it. I was surprised at how much came out. I didn't measure it but it seemed to be about a full quart, maybe a bit more. I now have a feeling that I may have removed more fluid than I put in. Car seemed to drive and shift fine afterwards. Also I have read that sometimes Toyotas are overfilled from the factory... so maybe all is ok? I hope...

Why were you using wrong temperature range if I showed you in the video correct range from Toyota service manual?
@brandontibbetts42143 жыл бұрын
@@repairvehicle I was too cheap to subscribe to the information service to get the temp range from it. I didn't assume the car in the video is the same as mine or that it would have the same temp range. I figured Toyota dealer would tell me... and they did. But the procedure they printed for me is much more elaborate and uses special dealer tools. I assumed the temp range stated in that procedure would still be the same as in yours, but maybe my assumption was wrong. Would you be able to tell me the correct temperature check range from your source for this procedure on a 2011 Camry LE 2.5L 4 cylinder ?

Normal Operating Temperature (40 to 45°C) (104 to 113°F)
@brandontibbetts42142 жыл бұрын
Update a year later after I've done this procedure now several times on 2 different 2011 4 cyl Camrys. The hot temperature range I got from the dealer the first time was for a different level check procedure... the "hot" procedure. In other words the customer brings the car into the shop and they cannot wait many hours or overnight for the transmission to cool to the lower range for the "cold" procedure as described in this video. The hot procedure doesn't use the level check tube and instead uses a very expensive set of tools that really only the Toyota dealer would have. When I went back to the dealership and talked to the tech again he said "ohhh... you want the cold temperature range" and told me that for a 2011 4-cyl Camry (2AR-FE) that range is 95 - 113 degrees F. Further, more than one person including KZbinr "The Car Care Nut" has advised to set the level at the lower end of this range... right as the ScanGauge reads 95. If you set it at toward the higher end the trans might act fine when it warms up but might be a little low on fluid right after a cold start when it's still cold.
