Thanks, Tony. Lots of other web sites (including Synology) pointed towards using Synology's Migration Assistant (MA) for data migration. I guess I'd forgotten that one of the benefits of RAID was the ability to hot-swap drives, because I was just about to pull the trigger on MA when I found this video. This is soooooo much easier and reassuring. Upgraded 2x4TB to 2x8TB in my DS224+. The first drive took about 3 hrs 50 minutes to build. The 2nd drive took about 3.5 hrs. All my apps, containers, data, etc. are intact.

Thank you for this video! Followed your steps exactly with my DS22J and was able to install two 20TB HDD's (Seagate IronWolf Pro) with zero issue so far. 20TB HDD's are not officially supported by Synology from my understanding, so I have no idea if this will mess up down the line or if a future update will make them officially compatible. THAT BEING SAID, Synology does claim that the DS22J (and many other devices) is capable of a maximum single volume size of 108TB This was the time it took for each of the 20TB HDD's to format. 4:30 PM to 10:51 PM for my first drive (6 hours, 1 minutes) 10:44 PM to 3:33 AM for my second drive (4 hours, 49 minutes) Neither of these compared to the amount of time that it took to expand the drive for the additional storage space available. 20% is what the expansion started at (I would assume to account for the previous 4TB's I had) and after an hour was only at ~23%. The larger you're increasing your HDD space to seems to play a proportionate role in the length of this process.

Thanks Tony. I'm doing almost the exact same thing for a customer on a DS218 in the next few days. Two WD Reds 4TB, swapping for two Seagate 8TB. Presumably, replacing one of the drives with the power off achieves the same thing and you get the degradation beep and messages, followed by the ability to repair on the newer drive? The Synolohy I'm dealing with is in an awkward position and I would have to remove it from a network cabinet to get the drives out. This was really useful and you have a new subscriber.

Excellent video! Thanks for posting! I have a question though. It was not clear whether the existing data was automatically copied to the 1st drive when you first inserted the new drive and have it repaired. Not sure if I missed that part but when you mentioned to make sure I have backup of the data, I assume I need to copy my data first to an external drive and copy it back once I installed the new bigger drives? I'm confused.
@QuikTechSolutions
@QuikTechSolutions 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chiz, thanks for watching & commenting. Sorry my video left you confused. So as a best practice you should always have at least one backup copy of your data, if not two. When the new drive is inserted the repair process rebuilds the RAID, hence restoring the data to the drive. The reason to have a backup of your data is in the rare event the repair process fails. Hope this makes sense.

Aside from the model number (DS220+) your situation was exactly like mine. 46% used, 4tb to 10tb. I went with Toshibas (black friday/cyber monday sales) My estimated time is 5 hrs though. We'll see how true that is. Hopefully it's true so I can kick off the second drive tonight before I go to bed. Nice video. Hi Filho, thanks for watching. You certainly can do what you are asking. The problem with doing this is you only have one drive with no failover. In a two drive system in a Raid 1 or SHR format, the drives are mirrored so if something should happen to either of the drives you wouldn’t lose any data. You would simply replace the bad drive. The NAS will rebuild the array, nothing lost. In the scenario you present, if something happens to the one drive, everything lost. Hope this makes sense. Have a great day.

Hi, great video, just a small question: you have two 10TB hard drives, and RAID is SHR. The total capacity of the volume should be 10+10, but why it's still showing 10(8.73) GB? At least it should be more than 10TB.
@QuikTechSolutions
@QuikTechSolutions 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. So there is alway some overhead to account for. In a 2 bay system with SHR, two 10 TB drives only give you 10TB of storage cause the drives are in mirrored configuration. Take into consideration the overhead and you have the 8.7.

My concern is I'm running the drives as JBOD (vs RAID). Do you by any chance know if I could follow your steps to swap the 8TB for the 18TB, connect the 8TB to the NAS via an external adapter, copy back in the data, and then rebuild the configuration? I suspect this may not work and I'll have to recreate the entire thing off a backup I have on some external drives but I dread loosing all the PLEX data that has been incorporated only on the NAS. I've searched the googles but come up empty handed on this one thus far...

Thanks for the video, Brian. I thought that one of the benefits of using Synology Hybrid RAID is that you can have one small size HD (e.g., 4 TB) and one bigger HD (e.g., 10 TB), and the system would recognize the bigger HD 10TB of space; whereas RAID 1 would show you only 4 TB (i.e., taking the smaller HD size ). However, in your video, when you added a bigger HD (i.e., 10TB), the storage size remained what was before (i.e., 4TB). Is my understanding correct that the Synology Hybrid would recognize the bigger HD connected to the system? If so, then why didn't your system recognize 10TB?
@QuikTechSolutions
@QuikTechSolutions 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Arsalan! Thanks for watching. Question - who is Brian? In any event, yes the system did recognize the 10TB drive and the storage pool did expand once the second 10TB drive was added. Did you watch the whole video? After the repair process completed the storage pool was expanded to around 9+ TB.
@memonarsalan
@memonarsalan 2 жыл бұрын
@@QuikTechSolutions Sorry, Tony. I was reading your reply to Brian below and for some reason that name just stuck in my mind. Yes, I did watch the entire video. I should have been clearer. I understand that when you put both 10 tb drives the storage pool increases. My question was more related to when you only had just replaced one drive rather than both. But looking at another video last night, I came to know that SHR takes the largest size disk for redundancy, so in a 2 Bay system both the disks need to be changed and need to be of the same size because the drive with largest size will be used for redundancy. So the benefit of SHR of recognizing the largest HD in the system rather than smallest (as is in the case of a RAID), is only a benefit if you have a 3 bay NAS because in a 2 bay NAS, you will need to replace both the drives to get a higher storage.

Hello Cosmin Aldea. Thanks for watching. So there is a setting when first selecting the type of RAID called JBOD (just a bunch of disks). This offers no redundancy but will sum up the value of both drives. If you already have drives setup in a RAID, you’ll most likely have to initialize them to change to JBOD. Back up your data if you plan to do this. Good luck.
