Thanks for your helpful videos SpaceRex! Just wanted to say something happened on me when setting up backup. I bought an external hard drive which has exfat in it. And I could not see the usb1 in hyper backup directory. For people who has the same problem, in order for you to find the usb1, you need to install exfat access from the package center. And with DSM 7.0 you can download it for free. After it was installed, I was able to select usb1 in hyper backup. I hope this will help someone.

Just bought the DS1819+ so been going through your all your old videos. Really nice review and outline of the Hyper Backup tool. Thanks for putting this one out. Going to have to figure out how long it takes before I get frustrated with a 1GB connection and splurge for the 10GBe setup/LAG configuration. Keep them coming. I really love my DS1819+ (not going to lie the 10Gbe is awesome for by big file transfers and my camera offloading) Honestly the thing that has make my life easiest is just having an always on low powered machine for offloading work to. @@SpaceRexWill thanks, I'm patiently waiting for DSM 7.0 release and hoping that comes with multichannel SMB support integrated and fully flushed out, then I can run an LACP/LAG setup. I'd be able to skip the 10gbe port on the NAS save some money on that configuration at least. But we shall have to see whenever 7.0s release happens... I am excited to be able to spin up some VMs and see how they run on as a sandbox or a remote connection for test cases.

I've got a lot of "lay-person" experience with computers and software. However, I would not have had the confidence to set up a Synology NAS if it weren't for all your videos. Thank you! Please, I've got a question about using HyperBackup. I'm using an iMac running OS Monterey. I've got a DS720+ (DSM7) with a storage pool of 4TB set up as SHR RAID (2 4TB HDs). Here's my main question: I want to use a 5TB external USB hard drive (NTFS) to use as a backup disk. I've powered it up and plugged it in. Now, when I use MACOS finder to connect to the NAS server, my choices are to mount the NAS volume and usbshare1-1 and usbshare1-2. I've poked around and see that usbshare1-2 is almost 4TB while usbshare1-1 is that remaining from 5TB. It seems that the 5 TB USB drive has been partitioned, magically, because the NAS is 4 TB. Should I mount both usbshare1-1 and usbshare1-2 and let Hyperbackup figure this out? What do you think? Should I mount just one or both? Maybe there would only be usbshare1 for a 4 TB or smaller drive, but I want to use the 5 TB drive that I have. Thanks again!

This video is very useful. Perhaps there was one thing that was not explained - the issue of accessing the 'destination drive' (i.e., the external USB drive). I followed every step as described in the video. I then encountered an error message - ' Backup failed .. insufficient privileges to access this destination shared folder'. I checked the relevant info on the Internet - most suggested the issue of 'permission' or 'ownership' of the folder(s) etc. For some reasons, I found that some of the folders that I wanted to backup (e.g., photos) did not have the 'right permission' for HyperBackup to access. I had to change/edit all the permission settings via 'Shared Folder' in the Control Panel. Once that was done, the backup task kicked into action. I don't assume that other people may come across the same problem ... probably just me, a non-tech person trying to do an in-house tech task !!

My question is what is the best format for the usb drive to be set up in? im thinking btrfs or ext4 (ext4 seems to give me an extra 600gb capacity!). I was thinking of using btrfs but i read that you can't use the extra btrfs features on the usb drive (whether thats all btrfs formatted drives or just ones being used via synology hyperbackup and therefore a limitation that synology places?). i also read that ext4 is a lot faster. can you confirm what features would be available between the two formats in my use case and which you would recommend please?

I found this interesting in that I've just set up my new two bay NAS to back up to S3 storage. Now I'm about to set up a local USB drive for disaster recovery. In the video, it's suggested to leave the drive in place on the USB port. In a disaster recovery scenario, you'd want a drive off site, or at least in rotation. At the moment, I'm thinking I'll keep the drive in a safe spot and plug it in once a week to run the backup, and rely on nightly S3 backups. For real disaster protection, one would go off site, and would stay on the NAS all the time. If I was really paranoid, that would be three drives in rotation, one waiting, one on the NAS, and one off site. It wasn't clear to me if the script that was created would auto start when a USB drive was mounted, or if that was an option to set somewhere.

If you are a PC user NTFS makes since for you. EXT4 will not allow you to mount on windows

Some tips: Renaming the shared folder of the external disc to something other than the default - for example to ‘usb-backup’ - ensures that the external disc always has the same name so hyper backup will always find it. It’s possible to duplicate your external disc and swap them over occasionally while using a single hyper backup task for both discs. Unfortunately having an external usb disc plugged in seems to interfere with the sleep functions of the NAS, so will increase the energy usage and device wear a bit (depending on your usage type)

So the way that I have done this is just pop out the drive from the case (there are some questions about power supply that I will have to defer to the internet) and from there I set it up as its own jbob pool and did hyper backup to it. This was slightly annoying for some reasons (such as it being its own volume when looking at stats and giving big warnings when the space was filling up) but its pretty strait forward

Once again, thank you for sharing! You've been my guide on my synology experience... I've created two tasks, I'll back up once a week (or manually when needed) and set the backup to eject the external HDD in the end of the process, that way I'll keep the HHD "disconnected/Unmounted" the rest of the week, then I've setup the Synology to shut down and turn on in the day I've scheduled (to mount the drive) before the task. Can you confirm if this will work as expected? The idea is to keep the external HDD powered off during the whole week and only turned on for that weekly backup, also don't know if it can be mounted after being ejected in the NAS trough DSM, I hope e doesn't cause it's also a prevention for any attack, that way the information on the external couldn't be accessed. What do you think? Is this a good idea or can It be mounted after ejected since it ill still be plugged in? Have a nice weekend!

DS923+ has only 1 USB port. Can I safely use a USB Switch Hub to connect both an external drive and the UPS backup interface? I cannot afford to risk my UPS running out of battery before the NAS is shut off so that would prevent me from leaving the external drive connected constantly.

My synology has 3 - 4tb drives and 3 - 2tb drives using SHA raid this means I have 14tb of usable space. My usb array has space for 4 dives. It's also worth calling out that if you use single version, it backs up into a regular file structure (like what you you get if you ran vanilla rsync) rather than putting them all in a .hbk file which requires Hyperbackup Explorer to view.

This is an important part of the backup workflow I would argue. By using the “single version” you’re able to plug and play without requiring proprietary Synology .hbk files. I would make two external HDD copies, one using single version, and the other utilising versioning so that you can get data back from user error/virus etc

Ver interesting video of you on this subject , thanks. I am already using this backup, on an external 8gb usb drive on the fast usb port. I just discovered the possibility of using the backup explorer on windows and have to try that out yet. But I wss also thinking as next step, to use a second usb drive to use as off site back against ransome attack encryption. And then I would just do the full restore once a week so that I can see all volumes and shares just from the Windows explorer. I want to use 2 offsite disks. Then every week I use and overwrite the other disk. And remove it after backup and store it in my garage which is separeate 10 meters from my house behind the garden. That way my data is always protected against a great fire in my housr, as well as against these frightning ransomeware encrypters. What about that idea.I only need to adjust to the weekly disipline.

What would be very helpful for others viewing this video is to address the topic of formatting the drive before doing this procedure. I eventually selected exFAT but only after rsearching this matter. Synology DSM would not recognize a partition on my new LaCie rugged drive until I formatted it.

I had a Seagate drive as the external USB backup device but it didn’t last very long, died just inside the warranty period and so Seagate replaced it. However, the replacement died just outside of the warranty period and so I’ve ordered a WD drive this time. My question is, do these drives spin 24/7 (I keep my server on all the time) which would explain why they’re not lasting long or do they (should they) spin down if not being backed up to? If so, how do I ensure they only start up when a backup is happening?

HI Will: I have 2 USB WD drives that I have been using (6TB each). I have been doing a monthly rotation in and out of cold storage (Safety deposit box) I have a total of 17tb available on my NAS and currently have about 11TB of files. My 6TB WD are both full at this point, but looking at how I setup my Hyper back up to begin with, I was a bit sloppy. What I want to do is return both drives to empty and start again with a well thought out layout. Problem I am having is being able to clear the drives to start again. I can't find a format or delete all option in Hyper back up for my external USB drives. And when I plug into my USB port on my PC it is not recognized so I can't format it. Yes! This will operate just like snapshots in the sense that if someone deletes / encrypts the files over smb you will be able to recover them. Just make sure setup the backup to have versioning

Do you need 1:1 storage space between the NAS and the external hard drive, or, if the backups are compressed, what is the target ratio of NAS space to external hard drive space for backups?

The backups are compressed, but most people will not see a real storage gain from compression as files like photos and videos are already highly compressed

@@SpaceRexWill Okay, thanks! It sounds like we'll want to be close to 1:1 then, but external hard drives currently don't go beyond 24tb, so backing up more than that would likely require a second NAS/DAS or cloud service.

Hi, Synology do not appear to have any supported 16TB backup drives. What would you recommend as they wont offer support when their Hyper Backup software fails to perform the backups to the Toshiba Enterprise 16TB External USB HDD. Maybe I need to start looking at other vendors as well such as QNAP. Any thoughts or recommendations as I need to backup quite a bit of data.

I swap between two external HDs. Both have their own set of hyper backups created. If I disconnect a drive, and then reconnect it, it’s shows correctly as an external HD but my hyper backups fail. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks for the video! i like to know i have 3x 12TB HDD in NAS and i have 1x12TB USB, i only use 1 TB for now since i brought the NAS new. Whatif i using the 12TB USB for backup and some how i hit the max capacity in the future, what should i do, can i back up on the 2nd USB for extend Backup storage? thank you

awesome. Do you know the aprox compression ratio? So I know what size ext to get? I have 8TB in my Synology and if I want to back up the whole volumes what size Ext HD should I consider? Also does the USB on it provide power or do you need a powered HD

Like everything compression is based on what files you have. Any already compressed files (images, movies, etc) will have next to no compression. ASCII text files could be ~2-2.5 depending

Ok so I have 4 new 14tb drives in the mail. Upgrading from my 6tb drives. I have a usb back up with 13tb on it (all the data). Would it be quicker to swap one drive at a time or just pull the bandaid and rebuild the complete pool from the back up? Ds920+

So I was looking for something like this but I don't know if it's quite what I need, I'm kinda new to synology, here's my issue, I have a few folders that I want synced into the hard drive that I have connected to the synology drive just like you mentioned it. It's only a few folders and I want those folders to back up into the external drive and mirror the folders inside the NAS. I want them to sync if I add something or delete something. I also have data in the external hard drive that I wouldn't want deleted, so what is your recommendation for this scenario? I've looked and I've seen some suggestions where you have to SSH into it and put the code, I am totally comfortable doing this but my hesitation is that I don't know enough about synology to know if this is the right path for it, or if maybe the right solution is the one you described here? Please help, just point me to the right app and I'll do the rest. Thanks in advance.

You never mentioned the size of the external drive your backing up to. Just say I have 20tb on my nas, do I need 20 tb external to back it up too. You mentioned enabling compression but it can only do so much. TIA

So in that case you would need to split into multiple groups. So you could have 2x shared folders each with 10 TB. And backing up to 12 TB drives

I have this same setup on my 1520+. However, my seagate backup drive disappeared from Synology after a day or two. I would have to unplug and plug in the USB cable in order to come back. So everytime I do a backup, I would have to pull and plug so the seagate drive can be recognized. I believe my drive went to sleep and synlogy couldn't wake it up unless I pull and plug.

You can disable drive sleep in control panel. This might solve your problem

Thanks for the guide. I'm using Hyper Backup right now, but don't understand why it's displaying progress as a massive 88GB at 5%, when the total data size on the NAS is only 1.8GB? My configuration consists of 2 3TB HDDs in RAID 1.

What to do if my Synology is much larger total capacity than any individual external USB devices? My Synology is currently 40TB and I would love to have at least offsite copies of my files on external drives but I can't figure out how to handle this sort of situation.

You would want to brake up your backup in to ~12 TB chunks by backing up specific folders at a time to specific hard drives
