Loved the video, Tony! I still think Tailscale is one of, if not the best option for most users. Especially now that they changed their free tier!

Thank you for the great video 👍 I came across your video while searching for a solution about an issue that I encountered while setting up my Hyper backup on my 2 NASs using Tailscale. The issue that I encountered is that for some reason I believe that port 6281 might be the cause for both NASs not being able to communicate in order to complete that backup task. Everything is working perfectly when both machines are on my home LAN. Also I am able to log in to both machines from my computer on Tailscale as they are both showing online on Tailscale's page. I had previously set up some ACL's on Tailscale for other machines present on my Telnet, so in order to simplify things and eliminate any possible firewall issues, I deleted all ACLs and defaulted to the "allow all" rule where all the nodes would see each other. But even with that, i am still not able to log in to the target machine. I am using the latest stable Tailscale version on both NASs. I was wondering if you came across such an issue while setting up your Tailscale Hyper backup, and if yes, how did you fix the issue? Thank you
@QuikTechSolutions Жыл бұрын
Hi Jack, thanks for watching. I have not encountered this issue you describe. If you suspect the issue is with the port number, have you tried using a different port number. I’d be curious to hear the results. Have a great day.
@jacka.8500 Жыл бұрын
@@QuikTechSolutions thank you for taking the time to reply. Actually the issue was resolved. First: by stopping the firewalls on both NASes which allowed the connection to be established between them using the same port number (6281), then by turning both firewalls ON and reapplying my set rules back again along with Tailscale's ACLs, the connection remained active even after restarting both NASes. Btw, I already had the "Allow" rule for port 6281 even before turning both firewalls OFF and ON again. Anyways, regardless of what caused the glitch at the beginning, at least now Hyper Backup is working perfectly as I intended for it to function. I hope this solution might be of help to anyone out there who might encounter a similar issue. Cheers!

Tailscale has to be installed. Did you install per the steps in the video. If yes, then just enter the Tailscale IP address of the remote NAS when editing the Hyper backup task.
@allenbuyck7957 Жыл бұрын
@@QuikTechSolutions I did. I had set up a previous back up on my local network so I exited the name and put the tailscale ip address in. I’m going to move device to another location today and see if it all works. Your video is best one I have ever found !!!

@@QuikTechSolutions one last question ( I hope) : if I want to log into that remote NAS to update packages , etc. is it as simple as using quick connect? Do I need to put the Tailscale IP address anywhere else so I can log in and manage it remotely . Sorry to. Eva pest. I really appreciate your guidance .
@QuikTechSolutions Жыл бұрын
@@allenbuyck7957 you can log in to that remote NAS USING the tailscale IP address from anywhere. It would be much faster than quickconnect. That is the one drawback about quickconnect. It is a slow connection.

I did the following just like you stated, but for some reason, I can't get the one NAS to see the other. I must have my firewall too secure. I'll keep checking to see what is going on.

Why would the NAS receivng the back up need the script for outbound traffic?
@QuikTechSolutions9 ай бұрын
Hi James, thanks for watching. My guess would be because it’s going out over Tailscale (SDN). It doesn’t work without it.

@@QuikTechSolutions Thank you. One follow up question. I set up Tailscale on my home NAS The remote NAS however is alrady in the remote location. It's my Dad's server. Can he se up Tail scale on his end...Or do I have to go there and set it up under my name so both IPs are on my acount?
@QuikTechSolutions9 ай бұрын
@image969 hey James, it has to be the same Tailscale account. Plus, it is advised to do the initial backup in the same location, then move the target NAS to the remote location.

@@QuikTechSolutions OK thank you good to know. I’ve already had the back up running the regular opening up port 6281. I just wanted to switch over to tail scale. But same account explains why it wasn’t working lol thanks again

@@QuikTechSolutions OK I feel like I’m getting annoying now lol but I have one more question for you Tailscale is set up with outbound traffic script ran on my server and the remote server. I launch hyper back up. Enter the remote IP address. I put in port 6281, I click login. It brings me to the synology sign in page of the remote server. I sign in successfully and immediately kicks me back to the hyper back up screen, but instead of showing me the drop-down to choose the shared folder. It wants me to click login again. My username is not showing up best to the login button. I have to login again. It brings me back to the sign in page And the loop continues I can’t find anywhere online of someone having this issue . If you have any ideas I would appreciate the input

The only thing I can offer is this - once you SSH into the NAS and execute the command “sudo tailscale up” if you are not automatically redirected to the Tailscale login page, copy the URL that was generated in the SSH window and point your web browser to that URL. This should take you to the login page. Have a good day.

I. Have not used Tailscale due to it insistence of having to use a third party service to create a login. I have a low distrust of these services and don’t see why a user name and password can’t suffice.

Fair enough Jose. Offsite backup can also be achieved using a VPN. Have a great day!

Don't forget to set "expiry disabled" for those two machines in Tailscale so that you're not prompted to login again to Tailscale after a certain period of time.
