I think that the historian is forgetting that Israel and Saudi Arabia were coming to rapprochement and October 7th was Iran’s play to stay in the game so to speak using Hamas as its policy tool. After studying the situation for many years - with no personal connection to the area - I am increasingly of the opinion that Israel needs to take Gaza and the West Bank completely, and anyone who isn't willing to become an Israeli should be ejected into Jordan, Egypt or anywhere that will take them. Of course, this would mean Arabs in those regions losing citizenship rights for a while - but play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Maybe the international community could create a new state in Sinai perhaps? The UN resolution of 1948 did not take into account the creation of Transjordan, so effectively Israel would be operating legally within the boundaries of the original British Mandate.

With the supply situation I believe the USA got the Israel Government to agree to send the 155mm stockpiled in Israel (600,000) for just this sort of situation to Ukraine. Now that the US is energy independent, a new geopolitical strategy is called for in the Middle East. This must include stopping any Arab country from creating a nuclear weapons capability. It must include enlarging our Navy and deploying to protect shipping. It must include strong outreach to current and potential allies such as Jordan and Saudi Arabia, based on a common enemy, such as the Muslim Brotherhood. And we must support Israel as it rids Gaza of Hamas and Lebanon of Hezbollah. Domestically, the US must have a more robust intelligence capability, especially in cyber security. Perhaps we limit or outright disallow immigrants from various countries from entering the US. Mexicans are not the problem here. They share many features of our culture and they do assimilate. In short, the US must partner with Israel and other countries that share our Western values. We aren't perfect but are better than the alternatives, especially if you care about the rights of the individual.
