In 1970s and 1980s, there was a Quilon exp. This would reach Tiruchirapalli junction around 08.00 hours. Would reach Egmore at 16.00 hours. It was meter gauge. We have to use that train as we do not have any other train. 8 hours of travel for a distance of around 300 kms. Yet we paid express fare. Then came Cholan express.

In 70' s and 80' s there were 2 trains Quilon Mail and Quilon express. Mail used to reach Ms Egmore at 7.40 am while Express used to come at 6 pm so called day express in chord line as it started at 10.55 am in Trichy.

There were 2 trains Quilon Ms Mail and Express. Before gauge conversion of TVC Quilon to BG they were the only trains to Ms from TVC. From mid 70' s they became Quilon Ms Mail and Express. Mail starting at 12 noon in Quilon and Express starting at 11 pm. Orginally the only trains were from TVC to Ms all by MG till TVC Quilon necame BG. When Ms Sct became BG in stages, there was one train Quilon express first from TBM, then from Trichy then from Mdu etc. Quilon mail was popular night train from Sct to Ms for a long time. Pandian, Kanyakumari, Rockfort, TCN Janata, Cholan, Kamban, Quilon twins were the trains till early 96. Vaigai came in 1977 and set speed record in MG.

Nice vlog. Punalur to Sengottai Ghat section scenery was so beautiful..In my childhood days 70s Quilon Express, Trivandrum Fast Passenger(around 9/10 trains) used to ply through Main Line daily. But now?😥 I remember our family used to get the train from Thanjavur/Kumbakonam.

Naveen Kumar first time seeing this Kollam {Quilon] to Chennai Egmore Via Punalur and Sengottai. Ghat Secton from Punalur to Sengottai is simply scenic and Picturesque. Aryankavu Tunnel is the Tunnel which separates Kerala and Tamilnadu State. Your Intro at Kollam Jn simply super. Noted from your narration that Trial Run is being taken with more coaches for this Route. As this train reaches Chennai Egmore at 3.05 AM passengers will find it difficult to go to their homes since Local suburban trains start from 4AM onwards only. They may have to go by cab or MTC Buses only. How did you go from Egmore to your Home. Fully loved and enjoyed thIS digital travel wtih you. Your Enthusiastic narration keeps us engrossed in watching this video. During Meter Guage times this train was called as Quilon Mail. All the Best. Take care.

This train needs a complete change in timings. The railway passengers association has already requested to change the timings of 16102 to the old ananthapuri express slot from VPT. since this a busy section during that time, the loco change might be a reason for not implementing this timing now. The 16101 is also requested for time change to the old thirukkural timing i.e around 6pm. It will reach tenksasi at around 5 30, which is way better than the current 3 am. 16102 will arrive chennai at old ananthapuri timing around 8am Hope it will come into effect after electrification of EDN-BGM. Electrification trial is planned to start from February 1st week

Before formation of Southern Railway. After independence SIR (meter gauge) Chennai- Madurai shenkottai Kollam then to trivandum. Those days Cochin and Kollam was not connected. There were Three meter gauge trains via chord line. Tirunelveli exp. Tuticorin exp. and Trivandrum mail. Trivandrum Fast passenger comes through main line that is via cudalur Thanjavur Trichy and Madurai. Now that Cochin and Quilon (Kollam) are connected. direct Trivandrum mail pass through TVM- Kollam- Cochin- Podanur Jolarpet and Katpadi. Now you have direct train to New Delhi from TVM.. I am 84 travelled in MSM and SIR rails. All SIR was meter gauge and MSM rials were broud gauge, There were no A/C First class, second class, intermediate class and third class. The windows were not having cross safty bars and rhey were open. People used to push their luccages through windows and jump through windows. . Indian railways had a long story.
