QAYG-Flip & Stitch Log Cabin: • Quilt as You Go-Stitch...
Nancy continues the Quilt As You Go Log Cabin. She did a previous LIVE about a Quilt as You Go Flip and Stitch Log Cabin block (click here to view the video: • Quilt as You Go-Stitch... ). This time she would like to show you how to put the rows together.
You'll need to move the backing fabric away from the batting on the back of the quilt. Sometimes one whole row will be free on the last logs of the log cabin blocks. But you'll most likely have to remove some stitches where the blocks are sewn together. After removing the stitches, Nancy hand stitches the seams back in. First she stitches the seam back in on the last log row including the batting. Then second, she hand stitches the seam of just the backing fabric layer. As she moves down the row, there is another seam. Nancy will also remove the stitches of this seam, go back again to hand stitch the log and batting seam together and then hand stitch the backing fabric seam like she did before. Now that all the backing fabric is moved back, she can position the rows on top of each other. She'll match the seams and put in lots of pins to keep the many layers together. Once the layers are pinned together, start sewing but put in a couple back stitches to help secure all the layers. Continue sewing a quarter inch from the edge with your walking foot and right over the pins. Keep in mind, this process can become quite heavy when you are sewing a larger quilt. Once you have sewn the layers together, take out all the pins and trim the quarter inch of batting away to have less bulk. Embroidery or duck-bill scissors work really well to do this. Remove the pins holding the backing fabric away from the batting, open it up and flip the quilt to the front side. Flip it again to the back. Nancy pulls the quilt toward her while pressing the seam. She gives the backing a burst of steam from her iron and presses the seam toward her. Take you time pressing. Fold over the backing fabric a quarter of inch to just cover the stitching. Pin in place and hand stitch. Continue this technique with the rest of the rows.
Thank you for watching this LIVE and all your comments! We love and appreciate the support!

I am glad you produced this tutorial. I had trouble with rows and asked for your help and here it is! I actually stopped my seams about an inch from the edge on subsequent rows after I realised I couldn't 'flip and pin'. My finished quilt looks good. Thank you for your tutorial.

Thanks Nancy - I prefer PHD project half done - I started a quilt with sun bonnet Sue for my daughter about 30 years ago - which I am now finishing for my granddaughter - I’ve about 5 quilts halfway and loads of ideas for new projects in the planning - I’m not stressed about finishing them at the moment - I have finished loads of quilts - I sew and quilt on my domestic machine - the biggest quilt I’ve made was a Bargello quilt that was about 2.5 x 2.5 (it just grew) I quilted it on a ELNA 240 - I visited my son in UK for about 3 months and made it to keep myself busy. Never had all my gadgets that I have at home that I have to have, but he got his long awaited Bargello (about 10 years of nagging mom) Happy quilting and once again thanks love your videos 🧵

I've made > 6 QAYG, for kids. I used a slightly different technique in each one. Kids don't care which technique I used so I had great practice on the methods. All of them were string quilts, with many kid-friendly prints.

I only do QAYG as I have a shoulder issue, and this video has great methods for me to use. Thanks so much. By the way, I am down to only 1 UFO and I have plans for it very soon. Nancy, I just used your method and I realize I was doing extra and unnecessary work. Can't thank you enough.😍😍

I have some UFOs BUT....I came up with a nifty project to use them! When my dear husband went to the nursing home, I started sleeping in a twin bed (to mitigate the loneliness) A year later I've completed a gorgeous lone star quilt for it and came up with the brilliant idea to make a dust ruffle out of the UFOs....kinda a sampler ruffle LOL.

I have 4 UFOs, umm, make that 5. 2 of them are practice tops from when I first started quilting. I'm going cut them up and turn them into pet beds and donate to the shelter. I'm waiting to collecting enough scraps from my other projects to stuff them. I wished I would have known about trimming back the batting a couple of years ago. It would have made things a lot easier. Thanks for this tip :)

I have not counted by UFO's. I don't have the nerve. LOL I do know I have 10 tops ready to be quilted at least. I stopped checking my totes when I found 10. And then there are numerous BOM's that were started and have not been all pieced yet. Ouch! This year I decided to finish 1 UFO at least per month. I did manage to do 2 in January. Now that it's February, I'll pull out another to be quilted and one that needs the piecing to be completed. And this is a short month. Wish me luck.
