Meet too. My mother was never able to finish our quilt. But I miss her more, so much. My Mom taught me to sew when I was young, and to do it neatly. Pillowcases, aprons, simple dresses. Then, we discovered quilting. I was 16 when she started with a quilt for my oldest cousin's wedding. I still quilt, 50 years later. Flying geese is on my list of quilts to make. I've done some with more detail in the blocks, and have rearranged some blocks of other common patterns to design other blocks. But, not Flying Geese, yet. It will be coming up soon. though. For now, I am finding EPP to be quite relaxing, and portable. I haven't had much urge to get out my sewing machine yet, after dealing with asthma complicated by some respiratory virus. So, EPP has occupied me as I get back to my normal self.

My mother does that. Every hand made item, she folds away and doesn't use, even the cup towels and matching pot holders. It distresses me to the point I'm not gifting her hand made items any more. They were made with love to be used. So, when she passes, someone else will be using it, and it wasn't made for them. They'll be getting all the love I made for her. Use it. Wrap yourself up in it. Use it so much it becomes soft and thin. Don't leave any of her love behind. She left it for you.

My Mom also was a crafter and she made me a beautiful crochet blanket, I had it in a bag to preserve it and the moth got it, I could fix the damage but from that day on, I started to use everything she made for me❤️This video was sooo beautiful, Thank you Kate❤️🌟

I have a whole cloth, large, double bed sized quilt that my mother made for me and the amount of work that she put into it is phenomenal. It’s cream on one side and white on the other and the intricate hand quilting is shown off perfectly. I have it on my bed and think of her every day when I am making the bed and folding it down each night. It isn’t pristine any more because I have used it for 15 years but I appreciate it more than anyone else ever could. I also use the beautiful handkerchiefs that she had and her wooden spoons .... every day items are a better reminder of her than any expensive jewellery or silver.

I commend you on your respect and love for your mother. Over the years I've made blanket/quilts for my children and their children. All were given away and sold at a flea market. My children want the jewelry and shiny things. Sad but true.

See Canon ... that’s very sad, I hope someday that they come to appreciate the work you’ve done. However, no matter how much you love them, I’m afraid they aren’t “quilt- worthy”. I cannot even imagine how it made you feel to know they discarded all your work at a flea market. I am very sorry for that.

I'm weeping happy tears that you will sleep under the beautiful Grandmother's Flower Garden Quilt. My mother, a prolific quilter, quilted for 8-10 hours every day until she broke her hip. Four months later she joined Poppa in heaven. She was adamant that she didn't prick her finger thousands of time for her masterpieces to be hung on walls or stored away "safe". They were made to be used and LOVED. The kindest thanks was that her quilts were worn out by comforting those she loved. I feel Mom smiling down on me for sharing this personal message with you and hope you will use the quilt your mom made and wear it out, feeling her love for you every time you see and use it. (If you don't want to go that far, how about keeping it on your bed so you enjoy it every day and folding it down to your feet to minimize wear?) Thanks to Arne and Carlos for telling about you on a recent Sit and Knit a Bit.

I couldn't help but cry! Your Mom was lovely and I'm so happy you decided to sleep underneath it for your birthday. My Mom unexpectedly passed away on the 28th of August, 2018 at 80 years young. On 22nd of June she sent me a throw that she purchased that has a saying that expresses her love for me. I hung it up because it means so much. She was my best friend! Here is goes: "Daughter - A Daughter brings sunshine to brighten your days. A Daughter brings joy through her loving ways. A Daughter is a blessing that comes from above. A special and beautiful treasure to love". Along with this was a magazine that included the pattern of a granny sofa throw she wanted me to crochet for her. Who knew! It has so many colors and we were narrowing it down to her favorites. Maybe she knew she was not well, I don't know so I took this last request and began Jan 2019 and finished it in April. It has 90 octagons and 19 colors. I have it on a chair where I see it every day. Mom would have loved it, I know! There are tears and kisses intertwined throughout!

My mother made afghans, each one of my children got one she made for them. I still see some of them in their homes. When she died, there were several she had kept, so I offered them to anyone in the family who wanted one. They took all but two, I have those and the last one she made while struggling with Alzheimer's. Use the quilt, it is precious because she made it for you.

My mom passed when I was sixteen. I kept her lamb coat and the coverlet from her bed. Forty years later I cut that ratty coverlet into squares I used as padding in crimson and white Shaker Tape, Ladderback chairs I wove for my new kitchen. Last year, when my husband took the well worn chairs to the thrift shop, I cried. Silly really, no one could see the old blanket... but I knew it was there. Odd how mementoes linger in our hearts. Thank you for sharing your mum with me.

Kate, you should have prefaced today’s message with “grab a box of Kleenex...”. Your messages are always so precious, sincere, heartfelt....as I can see from reading everyone’s comments I’m not the only one brought to tears by “saving it for good”! My Mother passed seven years ago and oh my goodness the treasures she saved in their original bags and boxes are many. I can hear her say “ put them away it is too good to use”. I’m using them little by little on special occasions because when I’m gone no one will be here to remember her saying to “save them for good”. Your Mom will be so pleased you are sleeping like a baby under her precious quilt for your birthday. Maybe you gift her and yourself by using it one week a month on your bed! Happy Birthday Dear Friend. You bring us all so much treasured knowledge, you are truly a gift.

A great video. The Grandmother’s Flower Garden is my favorite pattern of all time. My Mom made me one after I was married....and pieced just like the one your mom made you. But it only fit a single size bed. But for my wedding she hand pieced and always hand quilted a double wedding ring for my wedding quilt. It was beautiful. Over the years and four ruff and tumble boys later.....it is near threadbare. I should have kept it like you did yours, but my boys enjoyed it so and loved to cuddle in it. It the winter because it was warm ......and in the summer the pieces of cotton were so cool when they first wrapped up in it that it didn’t much matter to them if it was winter or summer. I still have the quilt, but it needs restored. It is now 52 years old. I have loved everyday of it. She made several Trips around the World. Even though I am 5 and 1/2 years older than you, you remind me of my mother. Because you accomplished things and get them done. I’m a great starter, but am not much of a finisher. Precious picture of your mama sewing the Grandmothers Flower Garden quilt together.

This was such a lovely post, and it reminded me of my own Flower Garden quilt. It's too long a story to tell here, but my grandma and my mother both worked on this quilt. Also, my grandad cut out the hexagons, and my husband built my quilting frame, upon which I at last quilted it. I enjoyed the quilt for years, and then passed it to my elder daughter. I hope she's using it. The quilt itself could fall to tatters, but nothing could take away the memories of those precious ones who worked on it.

Your mom's quilt is beautiful....there are some things we just can't seem to use but need to enjoy. My mom did beautiful embroidery and made many sets of 7-day dish towel sets. She gave many away as gifts and I have mine put away...I could never use them! One of my cousins took her set, made them into a sweet little quilt and sent it to me after my mom died. I love it and do use that and enjoy it. Your quilts are all so unique! Peter Walsh, who had the show Clean Sweep, said once that we need to "honor" the things we love by using them, not putting them away in a dark drawer, etc. So I try to use my grandmother's tea cup at times, etc. If they break being loved and used, it's better than having them break in a box somewhere. Happy Birthday, dear Kate!!!

I have a beautiful quilt made by my Grandmother for my Mother for her wedding to my father. It is 52 years old now. It is one of the only things I ever wanted to be handed down to me. I received it last year and will never part with it. It stays folded up in a drawer so it won’t degrade any further so I understand perfectly why your quilt is too precious to use.

Your Mother’s quilt is beautiful Kate! I’m like you, I treasure every precious thing my mother made with her hands and don’t want any of it to be worn out. I want them passed on to her grandchildren (my children) and great grandchildren (my grandchildren), who will treasure them, and so a little piece of “Nonnie” stays with us ❤️ Your quilt looks as if it’s going to be beautiful too! Happy Birthday Kate! Have an especially wonderful day tomorrow!

Kate, I really look forward to your posts. I loved your mother’s quilt!!! I have 3 that my mom made, at first I didn’t want to use them either, as you said, they are too precious to use. However I kept hearing mom saying to me in my head “I made these for you to use, I made them with love and I want you to enjoy them.” I feel the same way about quilts I make for someone, “Please use it with love, enjoy the colors and the care that was taken to create this just for you.” My moms been gone for just less than 2 years. I miss her every day, but every time I snuggle under one of those quilts I feel so close to her!

Oh my how beautiful. Your parting words were just too precious. I brought tears to my eyes remembering my mom. She would save gifts given to her but why. They were meant to be used. You certainly have your mum’s talents. That was so special of you to share. The colors she choose where brilliant. So lucky to have those such fond memories. I wish you a happy birthday 🎁🎉🎂💐.

Recently found your channel and so enjoyed seeing your Mum's quilt. As a child in the U.S., I inherited my grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. I called it my scratch blanket as it was so comforting to scratch my fingernails across the individual "petals." The pieces were made from various thread counts, so I had my favorites as could be seen where I had worn them away. She was born in London in the 1890's, so I just absorb what I can of her home country by watching your channel and reading historic novels.

i understanding how special your mom's quilt is. it's a funny thing, something we love so much we don't use. i use to be that way but then i had to help a friend go through a home full of beautiful things that were never used and i thought how sad. so now i use all my treasures and enjoy them and the memories they hold.

I've tried twice to write a long message to you, Kate, to tell you all the reasons that I admire and enjoy you. Both times I've apparently grazed the mouse square on the laptop and lost my messages! Watching your videos is like a visit to a favourite auntie. I love the chit chat, the way you speak to your cats, the rustic, country style in which you live, and that you garden and love animals. I'm very much like that. I'm almost a bit of a west-coast counterpart for you! I used to garden and do all the preserving of my produce until my health stopped me, but that now gives me more time for sewing! I live across country from you, near Liverpool, about a mile from the seaside. I'm allergic to cats, though I love them, but have 2 rescue dogs--Pippa who is a chihuahua and Ollie, her "bonded" mate who is a chihuahua/corgi cross. I speak to them very much like you do your cats and pause to give them my attention when I'm sewing. One big difference is that I'm American. And I'm bilingual with regard to measuring, too. I still love Imperial measurements because it's what I grew up with, but am getting used to metric and love the simplicity of 10's. I really like metric when I need to fine tune a measurement and inches just aren't small and accurate enough. I've just watched your 6-episode Easter Flying Geese tutorial epic and loved every minute. I've only recently started being curious about trying flying geese, and I just may as soon as I finish the stack of quilts in my UFO collection (well, one at least) and 2 smaller projects that are waiting to be cut out. My current and long term project is a quilt-as-you-go windmill quilt (LOTS of HST's) for my mum, who is 83. It's made of genuine flour and feed sacks which I ordered from America a few at a time. I need to hurry. While she has no life-limiting diagnoses, I feel like she's dwindling. The reason I chose such an expensive and inconvenient fabric is that she came from a very poor family and her mother made some of her clothes from flour sacks. She's spoken of it so often! She knows the quilt is underway, but it has been for over 10 years. I spent so much time with gardening, and with dabbling in other crafts like knitting and crocheting which I love, but quilting is my favourite, so I'm putting all the wool aside for now and dedicating all of my spare time to quilting. That's a very long message and I hope it's not too boring, but as soon as I started watching your first video, I felt at home and you felt like family. Thank you. xx

Oh YES. always sleep under it on your birthday. It's like she is hugging you. I make quilts for my grown children - I want them to use them. But, I have things from my own Mama, so I understand how precious they are.

That is just what I was thinking- it could be a tradition to sleep under it on your birthday and perhaps *her* birthday as well. It would be like being in her embrace once again! ( I’m a little teary-eyed, because I lost my mama seven years ago next month.)❤️

I grew up using my grandmother's quilt and it was very very heavy. But even in California during the summer I sleeped with it, because if you put your face against it - it was cool ! I purchased a weighted blanket and I'm in heaven !

Hi Kate, I just love it when you share remembrances of your mum. My own 90 year old mother has dementia/Alzheimer’s and I have lost so much of her already. She was an exquisite needle woman in her day always knitting or crocheting something beautiful but has lost the skill to this horrible disease. I also love watching you sew and quilt. The rhythm is so comforting and relaxing for me. One last thing: may I ask you which sock pattern you use? I am a bit intimidated by socks but very much want to try some and achieve some success! Thanks for reading my ramble. Love to you and the kitties 🌸
