PV55 is actually one of the few pigments I’m not a fan of… but, mixed with PG7 (which I also hardly use on its own) it makes a wonderful deep inky blue!!

I would usually go for DS but I think Van Gogh took it for me this time. I’m quite surprised. -

Schmincke, with Van Gogh a close second. When I added four half pans to my tiny Schmincke 8 half pan set which was rather dull I added this colour, Quin gold, opera Rose and their gold which is very nice. It made for a very decorative and useful selection. Btw, about that olive green they include in man6 sets, I have a small olive tree I just brought inside to keep it out of the frost. The dark side of its leaves are a very close match. Maybe we think of olive green as being about olives, rather than olive leaves…. I tried watering it down to a very light wash, and there it was, a delicate pale green that matched perfectly with the light side…….

Are you looking over my shoulder Jay? I was swatching out the WN version when this popped up. I have the DS version too, but it is darker and duller. I really like the WN version. I much prefer this pigment to Dioxazine violet, which can sometimes be rather dead and lifeless.

Daniel Smith appeals to me the most because it achieves the darkest value, at least in your swatches, but heck, the price on that brand...

This is a beautiful paint. My favorites a definitely the schmincke and van goh but I'm thinking van goh is my favorite. Have a great day

Great pigment! I started with DS version, then noticed Royal Talens makes 2 versions. I have the VG reddish and the Rembrandt bluish version. When I look at them together, they seem to sit on either side of "warm" and "cool" violets. It's so interesting how the pigment seems to separate even though it's not a mix.

Van Gogh offers PV55 in the Quin Purple Blue and Quin Purple Red, so I got them both and regret nothing!

Of all the Van Gogh watercolour paints I've bought since starting my watercolour journey about 3 years ago, this blue tone version I'll probably buy again once it's used up. I only really use it for floral painting or adding a bit of mystery to a moody skyscape, particularly night skies, or enrinching some shadows

Van Gogh is a lovely student grade paint and easy to control. I have Turner's Quin purple and Quin violet. I rarely use them. I usually just mix my purple.

I do like the DS and Schmincke and the way they granulate. I don’t own any quin purple! But a few quin Violet which are more reddish.

I have the DS. My laptop makes them all look a bit like pv23 :-), but my desktop monitor does a better job. There is a bit of a two tone thing going on with this paint, even though it is ostensibly just a single pigment.

I love this color, it's so pretty and versatile. It's one of the purples I do shadows with, or use in galaxy paintings to add that particular glow to them. I have the M Graham, Schmincke and Van Gogh versions. M graham's is actually on the more redder side of things and more unique.

I started using W&N Quin. Violet when I joined Anna Mason's online school, but she allows DS Quin. Purple as an alternative so I have both, of course. Anna used to specify Holbein's Bright Violet, which I still love. Billie Showell uses Sennelier in her online school and calls for Dioxazine Purple, a rich, gorgeous color. Billie is great too. I love blue violet.

The WN has the most tonal variation, so as usual, WN stands out to me as the most impressive brand.

It's a lovely colour. I have the one from White Nights, but I have no idea what to do with it. It's just sits in a box unused.

I'm like that with purples and violets too. They look nice but aren't much use to me when I paint

Try using purple for shadows and mixing with other colours.

I loved the W&N when you first painted it out, but then drying shift killed it for me. I don't have this pigment, but I will! I'd love to see how it reacts with salt. 😶‍🌫

I use Holbein watercolors from the tubes. I was just swatching Quinacridone Violet from their watercolor line today. I think I prefer the Schmincke's the best.

Well, I went ahead & ordered a tube of that Van Gogh Quinacridone Purple pretty much right after watching this video, haha. I really like how it looks - both in mass tone and diluted.

I love your reviews. Very soothing and I always learn something. I am impressed with the Van Gogh as well, and from your swatches prefer that and the Schminke. But truthfully, there's probably not a Quin Purple I wouldn't like ☺️💜

I’ve only tried PV55 from the Daniel Smith and Schmincke swatch cards, but it looks like an interesting choice for a mid purple color over PV16 and some shades of PV14. Since a few brands have this pigment in watercolor, I’m curious if it’ll become available in acrylic and oil paints outside of Daniel Smith
