Jacob, I'm in the surprising position of becoming of a super-fan, something I've never been before. Obviously, your KZbin videos kill it, as is evidenced by the number of views for each one. You have an amazing talent for actually creating the videos themselves, and not just your ridiculous depth of musical knowledge as displayed by your downright frightening arrangements. But this live performance seals the deal for me. Working "without a net", you flawlessly delivered a stunning performance, including the vocal performance - so thank you very much! One word of unsolicited advice - find other musicians that surpass you, and play with them. This is the only way that you can actually achieve your true potential.

Ye man, I agree a great performance! He is set to do a Project with Snarky Puppy who are a renowned Funk, Fusion, Jazz group. You should check out some of their videos with Jacob from their gig in London.. Also the Album he is going to be featured on is titled Family Dinner 2, to be released in 2015 not exactly to sure what month but very soon!

@@kylezo Jacob has grown tremendously in the last 5 years. He is a master musician, joining the power of his intellectual, emotional, and technical abilities into a message that can be understood across the spectrum. Like Bobby McFerrin before him, he is connecting audiences to his performances in a seamless way, giving the audience members the joy of participating in the process of music creativity. He is delivering his 4-album opus, which, unlike other musicians, is coming at the start of his body of work, and not at the end. He is akin some kind of musical guru, infectiously spreading his understanding and joy of music wherever he goes, and with endless time for the people around him. Ask me again in 5 more years.

His town is every producers dream. He sings dead in pitch and that comes off alien to a lot of ears because most people don't sing dead in pitch. His tone is very "flat" though which makes it seem like he isn't that good of a singer, but he's much better than he's given credit for vocally.

I love Oscar peterson. He's the epitome of a jazzman! But Jacob can do what Oscar can do and much more. Perhaps being white has aided him in receiving such praise and admiration but by no means is that the sole reason for his blooming success. I love the way Quincy gussies up Jacob's surname into a very fancy sounding French 'coll-ee-ay', rather than its proper English pronunciation of 'coll-ee-er' or 'coll-yer', the distinctly unglamorous name given to a coal miner or someone involved in the coal industry.

This probably isn't his greatest performance though it had superb slicks and slides, not to mention harmonizing and wicked chord structures were there. But there were things missing and lacking, emotions and feels in a jazz performance that well established artists are capable of doing. Those missing elements were really captured when you see the drummer and bassist unable to keep up with Jacob, a static performance where techniques definitely out shone everything else. Just hope he will not stop his progress in the future, keeping tabs on this man to give Jazz performances a breakthrough again in our society.

alan dvorkis He's an excellent singer as can be heard on his videos. Give him a break on his vocals here, he was 19 years old at the Montreaux jazz Festival in a smaller, more intimate setting ( a very challenging situation, enough to make anyone's confidence falter a little) in the midst of a meteoric rise. If his nerves made him choke up a little, um that's totally understandable...

His home studio recordings sound great. Very talented guy, but it's hard to replicate the multilayering he gets in the studio in these live situations. He's good live, but not nearly as interesting as his insane productions in the studio.

in his recent live performances he’s actually been doing a pretty fantastic job at replicating his studio sound with tools like the harmonizer. this was over 5 years ago, well before his first album! he’s one of the greatest live performers of this generation, easily.

So I'm catching up to the JC phenomenon. It helps to understand more clearly how he sees the world in order to 'get into' what he's doing. Here his playing and vocal techniques were clearly present but his performance feels very 'hallow.' Where is the soul (core) of this performance? Can you the listener detect the most essential thing he was doing to communicate in some profound way his feelings about his "funny valentine." I didn't get that, but I can imagine he has grown plenty to find that feeling, the core that make what he does believable, not just technically brilliant. Grammy awards and accolades are great: I wonder what more he did to earn those. Cause there was plenty of work to do from this start.

You thinking he is looking for hits, is your blind spot. And don't mistake 'trying too hard' for the exuberence of youth. He loves his music, he loves performing, he doesn't need approval from people like you to do what he does. if you listen to his album, and don't find anything very very interesting on it, then consider yourself uninteresting.

You are not worth my time or energy arguing with you and quite frankly Jacob probably wouldn't hate that you have your own RESPECTABLE opinion of what he does. That being said, saying his passion, what he lives, what he does so well according to Quincy Jones, Chick Corea, and millions of others, is is "fuckin shit dog" just doesn't cut it... Have fun being the person who hates or is jealous as opposed to the person who goes out and gets shit done.
@bricology9 жыл бұрын
Usergone Dark -- well, if the song did nothing for you, the guy should just give up on making music. /RME I've been a serious student of jazz for about 35 years now, and can follow Coltrane's most out-there stuff, or bliss-out on "I Loves You, Porgy" from Bill Evans first trio. So I'm gonna have to trust my ear and my mind more than your weak assessment. The chords were *intended* to not sound like those from the standard; they were *supposed* to be angular, rather than predictable. His delivery was hardly atypical; listen to Elvis Costello's version, or Rickie Lee Jones' versions. If you were hoping for a "classic" version of the song, that's *your* problem, not his or anyone else's.
