Removing infrared filter from a smartphone shows us part of the world we almost never see, hidden in plain sight.
If anyone can decipher the "secret code", post your answer in the comments.
Please consider helping fund the channel by becoming part of my "Quint-essential" support on Patreon:

I only do per-creation subscriptions and recommend setting a monthly limit in case I upload more than once in a month (which will be rare). I want to have the option of taking a month off and not keep taking your money just because another month has passed!

I have a few security cameras deployed, and I can hear them snap their IR filters in & out of place when they switch to/from night mode. Over the past decade or so, a few companies have sold toy "night vision goggles," which were just cheap CCD cameras without an IR filter. And they work really well for just being toys!

I used to work with fiber optic cables at work. I suggested that one way to see the light from an infrared laser transmitter without damaging your eyes is to look at it with your cell phone camera. It worked with my Samsung S4, but not with his iPhone 7. I think older phones don't have that lens filter that you removed. Great video!
@QuintBUILDs
@QuintBUILDs 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That was an S4 I took it out of. Every phone I've tried shows some IR when looking directly at the source, it just gets WAY brighter with the the filter removed. Of course depends on the exact wavelength used.
@theclearsounds3911
@theclearsounds3911 4 жыл бұрын
@@QuintBUILDs Right. This fiber optic transmitter was probably so close to visible light that the phone saw it even with the filter. Maybe iPhones have a more steep filter, because my friends iPhone showed a completely dark fiber. I should have noticed that your phone was an S4!

@@QuintBUILDs , another thing with the Raspberry Pi's is they are a good learning tool for kids as well. They are good ways to learn about Linux, Python, C, and other languages as well as the basics of GPIO pins and other control methods. Then if you combine µCU's like Arduino's you can get some really cool stuff built. :) There are so many cool things out there these days that isn't expensive that would have been back in the 80's when I was a kid wanting to learn about this stuff.

All smartphones or older cell phones with cameras that I had so far could easily make infrared light and invisible laser radiation visible without modification. But I know that there are smartphones that cannot because of the existing filters. If a remote control doesn't work, I always check the infrared diode with my smartphone camera first. The batteries in the remote control often have a poor connection due to dirty and/or corroded contacts or insufficient spring pressure. Both causes can be easily corrected.

A cheaper and more certain way to do this is with a Raspberry Pi and a Raspberry Pi "NOIR" camera. In the NOIR camera, the IR filter was left out during manufacture, so no need to remove it, no risk of breaking the camera or your phone. The Raspberry Pi also as utilities in the Raspbian operating system to allow you to take stills or video and program things like time lapse photography.

If anybody gets the idea of trying to decode infrared remote control codes with a cell phone, it won't work. The codes are a much higher frequency than the frame rate on your phone. Hook up the IR LED in the remote control to an oscilloscope or logic analyzer, and that will work! Or, an IR receiver hooked to a oscilloscope will do the same thing, as long as your lighting won't interfere.

I see this as a hardware hack. My question is, is there a software hack that will recognize the filters and be able to switch between filtered and nonfiltered? The old Sony Handycam had a lever that mechanically slid the filters in and out of place, i believe. I removed the filter on my old Motorola razer flip but the filter was very difficult to remove from the lenses and I ruined the first camera that I tried this on because I cracked the lens trying to separate the filter from the lens. My second attempt was successful and this video is truthful and I could see the ultraviolet lights.
@stuartpratt3662
@stuartpratt3662 Жыл бұрын
with the more advanced (and much more expensive) sensors i am sure you could do software filtering but most low grade and cheap stuff sticks (and this is a general rule of thumb as it is most likely manufactured in china or some secondary cheap location) to using hardware to filter unwanted wavelengths of light

@QuintBUILDs

There are lasers of that wavelength powerful enough to cut, but the TV remotes shouldn't be powerful enough to do anything to your eye. That said, even "eye safe" devices like laser pointers can blind you. Plenty of examples online. But that's entirely different than a little LED.

Often the filter is glued inside a housing that is glued to the circuit board such that it's really hard to remove it without damaging the circuit board. Better bet might be a Raspberry Pi and it's companion NOIR camera, or a security camera with IR night vision. But hey, if the phone really is junk, give it a try; don't know much an old phone is good for other than this anyway.
