Quinze: A Civil War Card Game - Vol. V, Episode 22

Playing cards was a popular past time before the war and was popular with soldiers during the war. We explore another game from the era called Quinze. Camp life was a common part of the Civil War soldiers experience and included in that were games of all kinds. Learning and playing period card games like Quinze is a great way to connect to history at events or at home.

My guess would be Quince did find its way to America from France, its probable the original game was Spanish. The name could be French or it could be Catalan, as it means fifteen in both Languages the root word taken from Latin. What you've got to love is how English just adds Quince to the vocabulary rather than translating it to fifteen. Early Spanish Card decks were either 40 or 48 Cards which would give the game a different feel, but I'd guess by the ACW 52 Card decks would be pretty Universal. You've had me thinking about this for days, but I really can't claim any expertise on the subject!
