what youre writing has some sense. the problem with barcelona is not that they relie on lionel messi, their problem is that their other backline (pique that other cb ) busquets are not what they used to be and they dont even provide the BASICS of being a UCL team. I’ve always said it I’m not convinced by piques defending. He passes the ball amazingly. Pique is the same level as David Luiz. The difference is that David Luiz plays for teams with less possession, meaning that the opposition have more chance to attack. At Barcelona you’re gonna have at least 60% possession, meaning the opposition is gonna attack less. If David Luiz played in a team with as much possession as Barcelona he would be worshipped.

Barcelona tried to match Messi with top players, claiming otherwise is being a Messi apologist at its finest. Coutinho and Griezmann were top players before they came to Barcelona and were forced to step out of their comfort zone to accomodate Messi. Barcelona DID buy top players, but either through mismanagement or Messi's own inability to integrate the pieces that he was given they did not work out for Barcelona. This is Argentina all over again, it's hard to find the right players to build around Messi successfully because he needs the team to play in a very specific way to be at his best and not many players thrive in this style of play. And now, in his advanced age, he presents a new challenge in the form of the team having to make up for his lack of defensive contribution.
