Quirks of the IWI Tavor 7 7.62 mm bullpup rifle

I've own a T7 for about 2 weeks now and I never mentally considered this issue. I must have just racked it on fire every time I've dry fired it and put it on safe after racking without thinking about it. I'll definitely be trying this out when I get home! Thanks for the heads up. Still love my Tavor, it sure is divisive in the community though.

That is not how my Tavor operates. It will charge no matter what position the safety is in. However, there is more initial effort in charging with the hammer in the up/fired position as you are initially pulling against the hammer spring and the recoil spring, but it will still charge just fine. Either your Tavor 7 had its own problem, or IWI changed things as mine does indeed charge no matter what position the safety is in. My serial # is 120xxx. Also, my recoil mechanism can be removed with the safety in any position and even with the hammer up/fired, it just takes extra effort as you are fighting the hammer spring as the recoil mechanism has to depress the hammer on the way out. It can be done but I agree that its much easier to cock the hammer before removing the recoil mechanism. And I also agree that the omission of the built in BUIS in the Tavor 7 is the only thing that keeps it from being perfect, so I can only give it a 4.9999999 out of 5!

I haven't heard of other T7 gen models but my T7 does not restrict the charging handle if the safety is on or off, with no mag or with an empty or full magazine (had them over 4 years now), it has been fully disassembled/reassembled a couple times and easily 2000 rounds through the T7 after the last assembly without issue. I also have a couple other caliber x95 that has gobbled up over 8000 rnds of .223 and 2000 rnds of 9mm with zero issues so I am quite familiar with the design. Not sure if my comment is relevant but it is my personal experience with this bullpup design.

So I'm pretty sure this is a result of how the IDF handles firearms safety. The Israeli's Infamous practice of carrying without One in the Chamber. Whish is a bit misunderstood by most people. First the reason they do this is most of their population is required to serve in the military. So you have people that aren't in the least interested in learning firearm safety. They didn't choose this. It's basically a requirement. So, on base or boarder patrol, they carry all of their guns with no round in the chamber. For the pistols they have a special chamber flag with a casing attached to the end inserted into the pistol. That way it's easy for anyone walking by to see that their gun is clear. However all they need to do is charge the pistol, which ejects the chamber flag automatically. For their rifles, which for most troops is still an M16-M4, they have a special magwell magazine carrier that holds the magazine horizontal under the magwell. Again making it easy to see that the gun isn't loaded. This carrier is designed so it can be pulled out and rotated to insert it in the gun while the carrier is still attached to the magazine. Now there are exceptions. When they are in an active conflict zone or beyond their boarder they have one in the chamber. This practice is only for when their on base or on patrol inside the country. Also there are different let's call them social classes in their military. There are those who serve because it's a requirement and there are those who serve by choice. They aren't separated in the service directly however they are treated differently by one another and by the command structure. The ones who served by choice are the ones who typically serve on the front lines and work their way up in the ranks. Oftentimes those people are allowed to carry their firearms loaded and sometimes even conceal depending on their position. They are also more likely to be issued Tavors rather than m16s/m4s. The ones who serve out of necessity are typically on reserve inside the country and are the ones who perform border patrols. There are of course exceptions but the biggest take away is that their structure isn't like most other standing militaries. Which is why there are so many differences.

You forgot the most important reason. Serving in the IDF the enemies (local diverse population) typically try to take your weapon and shoot you with it. Carrying empty gives them the advantage in that common situation.

So explain why you want to rack a round with the safety on? that makes no sense. I fire ARs and AKs all the time. I never rack a round with the safety on. Hell I only put the safety on when I'm done with them right before I put them away. Also if your practicing dry firing why are you engaging the safety to begin with?? Its always good to know but its like revving the gas when your car is in neutral then complaining its not smoking..

I believe CATM instructors teach students to clear a weapon by putting the firearm on safety, drop the mag, clear the chamber (charging the weapon), and check safety again.

Oddly enough the instruction manual for the Tavor 7 implies that you should be able to charge the weapon while on safe. Here is the complete Functions test from the manual. Step 9 is the step that implies this. 1. Visually inspect the weapon and verify that it has been assembled properly. 2. Pull the charging handle to the rear and release it. Verify proper and free movement of the bolt assembly. 3. With rifle on “Safe” , press the trigger. The hammer should not fall. 4. Set the Safety to “FIRE” , position and press the trigger until the release of the hammer can be heard. 5. Pull the charging handle to the rear and release it. Press the trigger again and hold it to the rear. Cycle the bolt again. Slowly let the trigger move forward until you hear/feel the trigger reset. Pull the trigger and verify that the hammer is released. This verifies that the trigger properly resets. 6. Insert an empty magazine into the magazine well and verify it is held by the magazine catch. 28 7. Charge the rifle and verify that the recoil mechanism is held in the rear position. Release the magazine and press the bolt carrier stop assembly, verify the recoil mechanism is released. 8. Charge the rifle and check the ability to set the safety to “SAFE” . 9. Verify the ability to charge the rifle when the safety is set to “SAFE” .

Just bought my tavor 7 and that feature did exactly what he’s talking about with the charging handle getting stuck when turning on the safety after it failed to discharge a round. I also had the gas tube on the lowest setting and that’s why it wouldn’t eject the round. It honestly not a big deal because it never happened again after the first mag. Still love it and worth it!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope we see your input in the next version of the Tavor 7 user manual. I love my new Tavor 7, but I did notice the charging issue. Looking into the chamber is a sure way to tell if a gun is loaded, whether the safety is on or off, so it is odd from a safety standpoint. Some liability concern, probably. I am still hoping IWI releases a 20" barrel for the T7 some day.

WOW Thanks I just got mine and noticed the same issues you saved me a lot of aggravation. FYI I double checked mine and the weird thing is whether on SAFE or FIRE I can pull back charging handle. Albeit easier when on FIRE but still cycles. Not sure if anything changed in the manufacturing (just got mine this year). I did give it an ample CLP bath and its silky smooth.

I found this out the hard way. I managed to charge it and got it bound up with a live round in the barrel. Had to pry the trigger pack out to avoid accidental hammer drop while trying to remove the bolt assembly😬

Got my T7 last night. Charging the rifle with the hammer forward and safety on is the same as with hammer back and safe off. Sounds like there's something wrong or binding with your trigger pack.

This video is a big help. None of those issues are deal breakers, but as you said the manual should not be so confusing and with a brand new rifle like this a lot of people are still learning these quirks and nuances to the weapon system. I too am a bit put off also by the fact that the previously integrated back up iron sights are not present on the Tavor 7. As an aside, nice to see your SAR Tavor. I guess I am not the only one who likes the SAR better than the X95?

I didn't know this Tavor 7 has been out 3 years now. I'm left handed so my opinions are slim pickings. I'm looking for a all around rifle that's short but can still reach out there. Do you still recommend this riffle and how far out have you been able to hit the target?

I think the safety charging handle thing functions much like the new Galil SARs manual of arms. Thank you for posting these videos. Ive got a hankering for the T7 again. A couple of things im weary about is a. Mil surp ammo might get light primer strikes b. My Tavor 556 was super gassy ( with and without a can) and im not too sure if the t 7 is about the same level or less gas in the face.

Recently I got my Tavor 7 20". Before receiving it I had watched both of your videos regarding Tavor 7 quirks. I haven't got a chance to test fire it but handled it with dry fire at home. I noticed it was really hard or impossible to operate the charging handle when Safety is on IF I hold the rifle vertically. However, if you turn it 90 degree and hold it horizontally with the charging handle upwards, it is almost as easy to operate it as Safety is off. Please try it.

I figured out pretty quickly for myself that to remove the BCG you had to charge the weapon. I hadn't noticed the issue with hammer down safety on issues, but if I get a misfire or stub one I won't panic now. Good video's. I have the X95 in 556 as well, both are great pups.

It's all very simple. You NEED to thoroughly familiarize yourself with all of the firearms you own - there can be no alternative. End of. Full stop. Period. I know there are people out there who don't like dropping a hammer on an empty chamber, and with which I can agree. You can lower a hammer on handguns without a problem providing you don't have slippery fingers. I've never had any problem doing it that way and for this reason I hate decockers, for the unnecessary complexity they add to the gun. Apart from that, I don't like dropping a hammer on a loaded chamber and hoping that the mechanism will arrest the drop. You CAN lower the hammer in a semi-auto rifle by pulling the bolt back far enough till the bolt slows down when it hits the hammer. Once you release the trigger, the hammer will harmlessly follow the bolt into its resting position.

The reason for that lockup is as a hang fire delay safety........... Its actually very smart, stops you from ejecring a roun out that could potentially go off like a mini grenade..... In a battle situation that safety would not be turned on after a hang fire you would just jack a new round in amd keep rolling..... They made it idiot proof..... More of less

I guess I'm confused as to why you can even put the safety on with the hammer down. THAT'S the weird feature. Most firearms that I've owned, you can't engage the safety unless the hammer is cocked. Even when I was in the army, if the hammer was forward (on both the M16 and the M249 (SAW), you couldn't put the safety on

Enjoyed the follow up on the video. However, even with the rifle on safe the weapon can still be charged and it doesn’t take the much force as witnessed here. Also as with any weapon system training would negate any of those issues on how to act accordingly under stress. Either way good write up and I’ll pass the info along to the people in Israel.

The rifle can be charged with the safety engaged and the hammer in the cocked position, no problem. It's when the hammer is in the fired position and the safety is engaged that substantial effort is required. My Tavor 7 exhibits the same "issue" discussed by Oliver, under those specific conditions. Perhaps the amount of effort required will decrease as the rifle breaks in -- I don't know. At the end of the day, though, I cannot think of a situation in which I would need to manipulate the charging handle while the hammer is in the fired position and the safety is engaged. This is an interesting feature, with (so far) no explanation, which, IMHO, won't make a difference in the way I handle, train with, or use my Tavor 7.

I think you need to understand basic operation of your weapons. If the hammer is in the fire position (up) it is blocking your recoil system. Did you try pulling the charging handle to remove the recoil system ? Did you think about dropping the trigger group first ? An M240 can be taken apart a number of different ways, all with the same result. The Tavor 7 and X-95 were made to cater to the American gun market. The weapons built to Americans who can't adapt other than a AR frame of mind. I took a carbine class a number of years ago for the hell of it. I out classed all the other students who were using AR's. The Tavor is a great weapon,you just have to have an Israeli frame of mind. I hope you enjoy your Tavor 7 and learn from it. You will. Also always state wither your weapon is clear. Explain that you are using snap caps or plastic training rounds. We don't want someone shooting themselves trying to replicate your actions.

I have had my 7 for a year now and can't love it more. IWI makes amazing products that are battle tested. I am not an expert on firearms. However, I did notice that your "empty mag (I presume) is where the real confusion is coming. In an engagement if one has a malfunction, the magazine should be removed so not to double rack a round. Just my opinion.

Hi bro. I just got my Tavor 7. Can u tell me whats the proper way of racking it? Tell me if im doing it correctly- i rack the charging handle and put it in that notch. Then I load the mag. Afterwhich I do the HK Slap and the pull the trigger. Do I need to put the Safety off to rack it in the first place? Or I can rack it w either Safety On or Off?

Other than that the handling of the T7 is the same as any other modern rifle like an AR only with the mag well in a different place.

One last thing- i have a CZ Scorpion Micro ( PCC) and the only way you can chamber or rack it, on your first shot, is to rack it and put it in the notch ( just like what the Tavor has),and t hen load the mag. When youre ready to fire - just do the HK Slap and pull the trigger. Thats the only way of charging on the Scorpion. But as you said- on the T7, you can do it both ways, the HK Slap and the normal way you rack the ARs or Aks. You load the mag first and then rack it. I just wanna make sure about that. Thanks a lot.

Assuming you racked the charging handle sans magazine multiple times (as one does when clearing a rifle), why would you dry-fire and then engage the safety? The very act of dry-firing should let you know the rifle is clear and ready for disassembly or storage. On the AR platform, if you have a misfire, you cannot put it on "safe," you just drop the mag and fiddle with the changing handle (with the muzzle down) till you can clear the jam. The idea that you would put the safety on while trying to clear a jam in the middle of a firefight, you know, cause you don't want to hurt anyone, is insane. On the matter of breaking down the firearm, all the safety is really used for is keeping the rifle from firing while in battery. Why would you try to engage it after dry-firing (taking it out of battery) to dissemble the firearm? I'm totally confused by this video.

Yeah, I still have it but I haven't used it very much. It's not bad but the changes they made make me wish it was more like my original Tavor SAR 5.56. I wouldn't discourage anyone from getting but I wouldn't rush to recommend it either.

@@JasonNortwich If it's going to be your only rifle and you intend it for self-defence the 308 is overkill. 5.56 is cheaper and more readily available which means you can practice with it more than you will with 7.62. Ultimately, if you're going to focus on one firearm, pick the one you know you'll practice and get good with. That's why my go-to is my Tavor SAR 5.56 after all these years even though I have a bunch of other rifles. One of these days I might pick up a Springfield Hellion though since I like many of its features like the adjustable length-of-pull and adjustable gas system that the Tavor doesn't have.

The charging "issue" you are encountering is pretty odd. I couldn't get mine to have the charging issue at all. I've dry fired and then put the safety on and still able to charge it just fine. I couldn't tell any difference in charging the Tavor7 in any possible way. I would think that mine is now at fault of an issue but it runs perfectly!

the Tavor SAR 5.56 is still the best AR made. The X95 is not nearly as good. I will never buy the Tavor 7 due to the excessive recoil demonstrated in some other KZbin channel reviews, especially when shooting in the prone position.

Your first diatribe seems a little pointless when in comes to "real world battle" situations considering putting a gun into safety is never a first thought. Either the gun is on safe in a non hostile situation, or on fire in a hostile situation. the safety is your finger away from the trigger. Secondly - Not really sure what the confusion is about the storage and disassembly issue is either. The hammer should never be left in the up position...(revolvers being the exception) "dry firing" is a two step process - pull the trigger then cycle the action to reset the trigger...therefore you have simulated a full cycle of "firing" the gun. Seems like a no-brainer. They shouldn't have to spell it out for you to get that. >YOU< have a misunderstanding of how "dry firing" works. 9:00 - clearly shows you've been taught wrong (or not at all) on how to dry fire and clear a gun. This is not the fault of IWI safety guidelines. As far other misprints in the guidelines...ehhh. use your brain...none of this is rocket science. Good luck and happy 2A freedom!
