Terrific video, Susan. How in the world did you guys pare down the list of places to visit? Looks like one could spend months visiting the sites, and the geology is fascinating. Well done intro to Highway 395.

Oh gosh, you would have LOVED the geology. We pared it down by watching other KZbin videos which featured sites along our route in addition to sites that were too interesting to pass up. My favorite was the early morning hot spring with cows in the pasture. It's just too bad that it was stressful to drive a regular SUV through the sand (or, perhaps it was very fine dirt).

If you like science, check out the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, which is a little north of Big Pine.

Mono Lake and Mono County are not pronounced "Maw No" as in the opposite of stereo. That is because "Mono" is a Native American word for fly eating people. The people at Mono Lake used to gather the pupa stage of the flies off the surface of the lake and dry them to eat. Great source of protein. The pronunciation is "Mow Know." Lots of people make this mistake. On your next trip to Mammoth, take Highway 203 past the the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area to Minaret Vista. It's one of the best views in the country, or at least, in the Sierra. If you want to continue down toward Devils Postpile National Monument and the upper portion of the middle fork of the San Joaquin River, go back down to the ski area to buy a ticket to get on the bus, which is required for day users. There isn't enough parking to meet the demand for all the day users so a shuttle bus system is used.

Thank you for the correct pronunciation of Mono as well as for the tip about Minaret Vista. We did drive to a trailhead out that way but I do not recall turning into Minaret Vista. We'll add that for the next time.

It is not Mon o Lake, it is Moe no Lake Both 'Os' are pronounced the same. Drives me crazy when people mispronounce it.

Appreciate the correction. I do hate mispronouncing words/names. Thank you!
