Certainly one of the most quirky things to do in London must be to ride a penny farthing bicycle through the busy streets. The Penny Farthing was a very popular bicycle in the 1870s and 1880s but died out with the advent of the safety bicycle. This week Joolz learns to ride a Penny Farthing with The Penny Farthing Club which was founded by Neil Laughton in 2013.
As you will see it's tremendous fun but quite a challenge.
Anyone can learn to ride, just get in touch with Neil through the links below.
On our route we go past the houses of parliament and Buckingham Palace.
Music by Tom Carradine's Cockney Singalong

Julian, this HAS to be my most favourite film of yours of all time. Tom Carradine was effortless on the penny-farthing, and you getting reprimanded made me laugh. I absolutely love all the English banter going on. Might have to watch over and over again.

In Denmark this kind of bike is called a “væltepeter” which means a “tumble Peter” -a play on the word velocipede

Wow thanks for this. My Uncle Cyril Smith had a rideable collection of 14 Penny Farthings which we learned to ride at 11 years old. He lived in Brent Knoll, Somerset, died in1973 and collected the bikes as a young man in the 30s in Portobello Market, where our Nanna ran a dress shop. Some of the bikes are on show at Weston Super Mare Woodspring Museum. He hitched a ride up to London with a Penny and rode around London on it one year. No crash helmets in those days, and believe me it's bloody painful to fall off. Cheers to all enthusiasts.......

Awww. The Penny Farthing is so adorable and it is certainly an once-a-life-time experience to ride on this! Sadly speaking i am a clumsy person and I might have to keep shouting Dismounting all the times, if I got the chance to join the tour! Definitely put Neil’s tour into my bucket list when I visit London again!

The first bike ride across the state of Iowa USA, my home state, was post Civil War on either a boneshaker or a pennyfarthing. It was on the right-of-way of a railroad from Davenport to Council Bluffs over the sleepers and the lunatic doing it was wearing his Civil War uniform. Must've been a daunting and rough ride! If I were doing the modern London ride and had not used the loo first, I'm afraid that deficiency would be corrected on the ride. The idea of getting on one of those deathtraps petrifies me!

Great vid Joozy, something a little different from the usual walks videos and good fun. For another slice of 'alternative London', I wonder if you've considered doing one of the guided walks of abandoned underground stations (they only do a few each year and increasingly less common due to security concerns, but there are a few), as that would be interesting viewing.

Julian you have surpassed yourself this time, good for you young man and jolly good achievement on your part being able to master such a modern Victoria mechanical beast. May I ask, what do you use for brakes or is that the reason for wearing boxer shorts - sounds painful, if not the uneven wear!. Never worry about those ‘down thumbs’ - they are just jealous they can’t ‘get their leg over’!
