I don't think there's anything wrong with smut. It can be genuinely really well-written, thought out, accurate and sometimes even character focused/driven and extremely moving. It can be just as good or bad as any other fic. Either way what's wrong with just wanting to get off and write/read something trashy? It doesn't make you a bad person. As long as it's not disrespectful, doesn't involve real people or minors, endorse problematic behavior, feed into stereotypes or fetishization, etc., I see no issue. But I can agree that romance does play a prominent part in fandom (and that the genre is more prone poor writing and the other aforementioned issues). I'd like to see more apreciation of familial/platonic relationships within fic as well, and when I do find fics that take that sort of approach they're usually extremely enjoyable.

As someone who was super into the Dan and Phil shipping scene back when that was a huge thing,, it’s very weird to me to see basically the same thing happening now. Especially when that shit negatively affected the mental health/relationship of Dan and Phil somewhat. Like I was writing stupid adopted by Phan stories on wattpad as a kid- Ofc dream and his friends are different people with different comfort levels- I feel like they enable this stuff a bit more, I guess it’s just weird to get older and learn ‘shipping grown men was weird and bad’ and then to see it happen again. Yeah same. It does feel different though, CCs now are a lot more explicit about their boundaries and a lot more aware of the reactions their fans have to their actions. Dream actively uses dnf for clout, same with Karl and his ships. Can't be denied that romance/relationship dynamics drive audience retention in pretty much all media. It rides a weird line of queerbait for me, but the creators are at least very affirming of their fans and a lot of them set specific boundaries to avoid further issue. It's just such a weird topic in general. When a person becomes a persona there's a lot of blurred lines. I just hope that the content creators feel comfortable talking about it when their boundaries are crossed (and so far it looks like they have been)

Bruh one of the best stories I've ever read is a fanfic in this fandom called Passerine. Sad-ist even made an animatic based off the story. It's an SBI fic (The SBI (Sleepy Bois Inc) are Tommy, Wilbur, Philza, and Technoblade) about Philza and Technoblade being Gods and Wilbur and Tommy being human. It broke my heart and stomped on it but I have quite literally never loved a story more in my life. A bunch of the other DSMP members are in it including Dream (Known as the Green God in the story). And while Passerine isn't canon to the DSMP, the DSMP is canon to the world of Passerine (DsmpTommy in exile gets mentioned at one point). My point is that there are some talented ass writers in this fandom, like should be award winning authors with this shit Amazing. Also bruh nobody goes to Wattpad for quality stories. It's well known mfs only go for the comment sections.💀

There's a surprising amount of good dream smp fanfiction but that ain't it. I read reader insert fanfiction but it's just weird to ship yourself with a minecraft youtuber, like the creator and not even the character they play. Dream stans scare me, but thankfully I don't interact with them, only the sane fanartists lol

tbh i wanted to address some stuff about this 1- it's wattpad not ao3 idk what everyone's on abt 2- i have read all the fanfictions mentioned here- not everything on wattpad is complete trash. the first few chapters of some are usually worse than the rest of the fic too- make sure to give it a chance. 3- ihaveajuicebox doesn't like the dream smp, she writes it for the clout (it's really obvious in one of her other fics, try again, where georgenotfound has a CONSISTENT streaming schedule which obviously is not true) 4- AREA CODES ISN'T AN X READER I'M LITERALLY DRY SOBBING RN THE CHARACTER AND ME ARE NOT ON THE SAME LEVEL- 5- the roommate doesn't have twitter. read further :) 6- those fanfictions are actually decently good after a few chapters 7- ihaveajuicebox's message board is a solid mess of people making fun of you for not comprehending what the full thing is, uhhh 8- yeah dream stans are getting worse 9- dream fanfiction is usually pretty cringe but the fanfics you've mentioned aren't actually all that bad 10- i think i'm done i just wanted to get this list to 10 have a great day and i'm not defending the dream stans or anything, just wanted to make sure this was clear
