That insulation keeps the wood from breathing. That builds up moisture. The silver color also reflects sunlight preventing any warming during the day.
@xXRedEyedStrangerXx7 жыл бұрын
hey you should paint it black in the winter or cover it in something dark and breathable
@boomer197 жыл бұрын
Exactly
@orange427 жыл бұрын
Yea if I was to guess the problem would be that insulation stopping the bees breathing. And for feeding you just need to leave them with enough honey.

In the upper empty box, put in a large burlap bag stuffed with wood chips. It insulates the inside, above the frames and absorbs excess moisture and any moisture that might condense and drip off of the inside of the lid.
@littlerockware7 жыл бұрын
I also made a wedge shim (about a inch) to let to moisture out in addition to using wood shavings. Works great!

I simple technique to help keep your bees warm is to buy some bales of hay, and stack them around the hives to cut the wind from hitting them. This reduces the wind chill factor, which helps keep the bees much warmer. The wind chill factor is the temperature felt from the impact of the wind and it is colder than the average temperature of the area.
@wesleysmith27005 жыл бұрын
Yeah, polystyrene boxes help too. Does the hay work better than the normal insulative wrapping?
@davem33627 жыл бұрын
Wrap the beehives in black tar paper the same used on roofs. This will absorb the heat of the sun instead of reflecting the heat with the metallic paper you used. The tar paper will help keep the bees warm.
@67bigjake7 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly ? That heat may have rid the hive of condensation ? Use those reflectors during summer. Sorry you lost so many, and I thought they should have enough honey left to eat through winter?

I used to work for a bee company and we fed "sugar syrup" to them. Only difference was we had a feeder tray in the hive. Take out one outside frame and replace it with a feeder tray. This keeps the "sugar syrup" directly away from the bees.

And if you're planning to order packages or nucs for the spring, be mindful of moths! As soon as it gets warms in early March or April, they will tear that comb to pieces. Take it inside until you have bees to protect it.

In winter the bees will eat the honey they stored. You should leave enough honey in the hive for the colony to eat and survive the winter. Also take any metal off on hive and replace with wood. Metal can retain cold and cause the bees to get cold. Just leave the honey for them to eat and no syrup and they should be fine.
@viggeriksson47457 жыл бұрын
you could also give them a sugar solution before winter and after you've taken out the honey, that way they will store the sugar solution which they will eat during the winter

My theory for the sugar syrup leaking would be because of the freezing temperatures you get, water expands as it freezes, as the syrup started to freeze the pressure in the jar would have risen pushing the water out all over the frames

I wonder if the changes in air temperatures caused an air pressure change in Your sugar water bottle.
