I remember the plant manager, where my uncle worked, telling me I'm working Saturday an hour before shift ends. Sraight up told him no, he says I have to, I refer to labor rules and terms of my employment, pull out my phone to record, state the rules and terms and tell him to repeat what he just told me about working Saturday. He backed off, few hours later agency called, told me they ended their contract for workers being needed, and I would be getting the $6,000 bonus since they had terminated the contract before the end date as per agreement. Easiest 3 days of work ever, guy even got fired a month later when the plant owner came by to observe operations and how he was violating so many legal rest periods of employees and using coercion.

The place I'm temping at right now doesn't give us our 10min breaks 2x/shift, but they let us go 30mins early still paid for 8hrs. I'm still frustrated as hell by it and I'm not putting in my usual above and beyond. I'm meeting expectations as an electrician shall, by code. "All work shall be performed in a professional and skillful manner." But imma take my time about it. 4hrs w/o a bite to eat isn't good for my blood sugar, so forget pushing myself hard. That whole being off 30mins early thing is just what keeps me from reporting them to the DOL. They're not doing us any favors.

I wasn't upset when my contract at a medical assembly line ended. They constantly had us working 6 days a week with, at max, 72 hours notice of that overtime. They also rarely approved time off because the same 3 or 4 people who had worked there forever were constantly taking it before anyone else could even try and they limited the number that could take off per week. The only reason they got away with it was because the time off was still technically available to us, even if we couldn't use it.

I had the fortune of venting my frustrations about a boss to the wrong person (not even a coworker, a classmate), the day before I put in my two weeks. She ratted me out, my boss heard every bad thing I said about her and made my last two weeks pure hell. So I just unzipped my mouth about how she'd and the owner had been docking our tips. Business hasn't been great for them since, and employee retention crashed tf out. Edit: I am aware my boss was doing something illegal; I did not know at the time. I am aware I could've walked, in a small rural community like this one, doing so would've affected my ability to be hired elsewhere. The circumstances around a person's employment are often not straightforward. Please keep these things in mind and do not talk down to me about a job I left years ago.
@JZ3141
@JZ3141 3 ай бұрын
I’m sorry but did you just say they docked your *tips?* As in, you were probably being paid like $5 an hour (assuming you worked in America) and surviving off of customer generosity and they took that away? Or am I missing something? Regardless, you tried to sue, right? There’s no way that’s legal.
@apollofell3925
@apollofell3925 3 ай бұрын
@@JZ3141 It was not legal and I was not aware it was not legal until after I had left the job. My coworkers were all under the age of 20, with the exception of a convicted felon (25), amd none of them were aware it was illegal either. I understand this is kind of confusing so I'll clarify - I knew my boss was doing something very uncool and had no qualms telling people about it after I left, but it wasn't until over a year later that a friend's husband (a chef) informed me that it qualified as docking tips and was totally illegal.

"why does nobody want to work" The work environment:
@hoobaguy
@hoobaguy 3 ай бұрын

@@hoobaguy Do you know what would happen if everyone would work within the limited selection of "real" jobs you've provided? our society would collapse. You don't have to like it, but everything around you relies on people who may lack the highest education, but are willing to get their hands dirty. The kind of people that make sure your amazon delivery gets to you, food is in the supermarkets and restaurants have any service. Nurses that care for patients to ensure the well-being of anyone who's hospitalized or who suffers from conditions that result in them needing special attention. People like you who devalue the importance of those more mundane positions are the exact reason many workplaces are miserable. Because people like you become managers, no clue about the work or care for the people below them. You are the lazy entitled people you blame for this.
@callowaywash
@callowaywash 3 ай бұрын
@hoobaguy4311 So, what is your solution? Because from the sounds of this video (and from my own experience), the lazy entitled people are the managers and supervisors of "not-real" jobs. You can work your ass off for the job and not achieve any form of respect or quality treatment. Education shouldn't be the gateway to a decent job where the working class is treated like real people and entry-level jobs shouldn't be miserable to the point of deterring young people from entering the workforce.
@aliceiscalling
@aliceiscalling 3 ай бұрын
@@hoobaguy My father had this same opinion as you until it came time for me to look for work between universities. He's always been a generous boss, so he couldn't believe how terrible all of the opportunities were for me, someone with a degree in a medical field, when I showed him the job listings. No business wants to pay more than they have to, so they want to offer low wages for experienced people. They want everyone to either be part time to avoid paying benefits or work overtime to cut down on the number of staff they have to pay. The days of caring about your workers is slowly disappearing because corporations don't have emotional ties to their employees. What they have is the incentive to squeeze out as much profit as possible. The best way to combat it is to constantly be on the lookout for a position that pays you better. Companies love when people fall for "company loyalty" and let them provide minimum benefits and salary forever.

My work environment was very solid until the boss changed. Instead of having a relaxed environment where we can take breaks when needed (it was mostly landscaping during the summer in the south so breaks were definitely needed more than once per task), a fixed schedule, and a boss we could actually converse with, to an environment where nothing is good enough. If you did anything that management didnt tell you to do it was an instant write up. They changed the schedule all the time and wouldn't tell me and then accused me of lying when i told them i never got one and when i tried explaining myself i still got written up and the big boss threatened to fire me over it like what the fuck do you want me to do. If you took a break and Management didn't know and you didn't clock out it was a write up. We're not leaving to take breaks btw, a break for us would be just sitting on the side of the road and drinking some water. But escalating the drama when you're going to keep working with these people for weeks isn't worth it. Much better for your peace of mind to vent anonymously online, resign because you're "pursuing other opportunities". let them stumble upon this viral hit months later, and slowly realise it was about them 😂

@@MildExplosion I was once in a similar situation and ended up typing about four pages of poetic vitriol similar to the above diatribe. I had it in an envelope the next day for my HR meeting as was going to turn it in along with my resignation if it didn't go well. The situation was resolved and nobody ever got to hear that incredible rant. Shame that it went to waste but it was probably much healthier for everyone involved.

@caramel9154 I see a beautifully constructed piece of wooden furniture, with fantastically complex and precise joints and an aesthetically appealing design to be fantastic art, as do many. Can this be done by a robot? Yes, absolutely. In fact, the only way I would be able to tell CNC machined parts and a robotic assembly from human work would be the tiny errors in the human work. Your graphic art is no different and you are coping. Sure, human created physical art will always hold value and be desirable. Your digital slop sold online or to companies for their products? Yeah, no.

No no no no no, wrong wrong wrong. It's come to my attention that you're not measuring up. You'll need to stay late, again. With no overtime. Your project has to be completely redone. You can't seem to do anything right. Oh, I'm- I'm gonna have to write you up again, too. You're just not measuring up. That's three more demerits this week. Did you get the memo about the pay cut? 10% across the board. We've gotta cut back, it's the bottom line, you see. And your insurance co-pays? Yea, they're going up. Better tighten your belt. We're merging with a bigger company. There's gonna be one flavor ice cream, one brand of coffee, one car. There's twenty people waiting for your job. One-third of Americans work for less than $8.50 an hour, get used to it. Be happy with what you've got. You'll have to play catch-up on the weekend, with no overtime pay of course. You're not meeting your quota. What's that, you say? The quota is impossible to meet? Duh! Here's how it works: I sit in my office - my corner office, and I do some simple math. I look at other companies similar to ours. I get stats. I take a nap. *burp* I crunch some numbers - and if the figures show it's only humanly possible for one person to complete, say, ten projects a week... I double it. And that becomes your new quota: twenty projects per week. Simple. Of course it's impossible, that's the whole point - gotta keep you on edge. We'll give you some malarkey about setting the bar high, meeting goals et cetera but that's not the real reason. We gotta keep you in fear. Fearful people develop low self-esteem. Thus, they'll never ask for a raise. What, you want a raise?
