Because Peter name was to be a "memorial" a way to rember this truth, if you think about it, how can it be the church of Christ if its rock is a human being? Therefore the rock is not Peter, but Jesus. If you also recall Jesus called himself the stone (rock) that the builders had rejected and despite that it would become the cornerstone. Sometimes people confuse cornerstone with keystone, they are not the same thing. While a keystone is an essential element in an arch because it helps distribute the weight and pressure load so that an arch doesn't collapse. The cornerstone is placed at the foundation base of a building, it is precisely oriented and it ensures that the construction of the walks will remain square thus ensuring the stability and safety of the building. The chief cornerstone is the first to be laid and all other cornerstones are placed in relation to the first one. In ancient times there was a tradition among many cultures to bury a sacrifice under the chief cornerstone. Jesus as sacrificial lamb of God becomes the chief cornerstone.

St peter? I take perhaps you are Catholic? I like your comment and its positive message. Yet you said they never gave up.. which is not exactly true..but your meaning might be different from my understanding of what you intended. My point is peter denied Christ, and others fled. They came together obviously soon after Christ was put in the tomb. When the marys declared jesus was alive. But yes they never gave up after seeing the risen Christ..i was Catholic from a lad till i was 20 yrs old..i personally just felt something was not right. The KJV of the bible mentioned jesus telling Nicodemus he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven without being born again. Nevertheless i just kept on going to mass. trying to shake this inner spirit telling me to leave the Catholic Church. Then i read where jesus said no one comes to the father except through me. Yet i was praying to Mary. Finally i started TRULY looking at how the Catholic Church got started (i also looked at how other denominations started) the council of trent in regards to the Catholicism really made me think. Finally in my personal experience..i just felt God leading out of the Catholic Church. I had a water baptism in the 90s and accepted jesus Christ as my savior and lord. I've had my struggles but God is so patient and forgiving. Now i just want to serve him.. so thats my story. I don't know why i just happened to come upon your comment or why i shared my story..God knows.. bless you in the name of jesus.

I prayed this prayer for someone who had mental breakdown, left home, couldn't be found but Jesus' s Precious blood brought her back home, healed her and she' s back to herself. Peter being the " rock" of Christianity is deeper than just him starting the church. It was the devine revelation Peter was given that Jesus was the son of the living God.
