I am a Canadian Baptist who attended a small, one room rural elementary school in the 1950s and early 1960s. All of the families knew each other and we were all Christians. We sang hymns in music class and memorized Bible verses, we celebrated Easter and Christmas, and had an annual Christmas concert. I loved it and wasn’t conscious that it would be a problem for anyone. As a young adult, my husband and I had friends from other non-Christian religions and some who were agnostics or atheists. As well, we had learnt about the legal separation of church and state. As a result, we came to realize that religion in schools was wrong. My husband and I had loved our school traditions but we knew it was wrong because a public school should be public, not denominational. Later, I was studying history which included religious history, at a former Baptist university. Divinity College was still on the campus and its retired dean was our minister and several of its professors were in our congregation. They told me about Canada’s fight to resist a state religion and to preserve the separation of church and state, and how the Baptists in Canada fought to keep them separate. Our minister even said that it wasn’t the school’s place to teach religion, that if parents wanted their children to learn about religion, they should take them to Sunday school and church and should teach it in their own homes. My husband and I stopped attending church when we lived in the USA and didn’t return after we moved back to Canada because the Baptists have become too conservative and judgmental about social behaviours. Everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, rights over one’s own body, right to love whichever sex they choose, right to self-identify with any gender, and so on. Religion can bring individual emotional support but it is too often used for evil purposes, especially when it condemns those who don’t believe or behave as a particular religion thinks that they should. We still consider ourselves to be Christians but my husband and I believe a theocracy is truly evil and contrary to what Christ taught.

So well written. Totally agree. In the 50s and a public school my teacher read bible stories when we came in from lunch. She ONLY read a children’s book of bible stories. We kids loved it. We, like you, were somewhat insulated. Thank you for your comment.

One step they could take for a lawsuit is to contact the scholarship board and see if they would testify to the likelihood of her obtaining the scholarship. This feels similar to defamation cases where actors lost roles because of lies released to smear them. If she had a "very strong chance" at being awarded the scholarship, she might be able to make the School Board pay for a near or equivalent amount in compensatory damages. And yes School Board, because the actions the Principal took are actions that involve his offical capacity.

To all concerned, here's what an apology entails. 1) Admission of wrongdoing. 2) Addressing the wrongdoing, IE, taking corrective actions to redress said wrongdoing. 3) Seeking forgiveness only after parts 1 and 2 have been accomplished. Apologies are not conditional, IE, "I'm sorry IF someone was offended." They are not made under duress. A genuine apology comes from an understanding of fault and the desire to fix the situation one created.
