Thank you. This was an exceptional educational video, concise way to learn this model that made a lot of sense!

BA 381-101 Operations Management, we are using a book called "operations and supply chain management" by Russell & Taylor. Chapter 7 in this book is about capacity and facilities design, and for the life of me, did not understand the problems at the end of the chapter. This video explained the basics of what it is I am doing and was able to solve a few problems last night. I shared this video with my classmates that got stuck as well.

Very cool. I immediately realized that this can also be automated with matrix functions. For example using excel functions like transpose and then use solver utility to minimize total distance.
@QVisible5 жыл бұрын
That sounds good.

would you share the way to use solver?

Can you make a video using restriction? I mean this was made using restriction free movement. I think imposing restrictions save a lot of time
@ruhejannatheena67273 жыл бұрын
Pretty well explained. Thanks! But, how long I should make alternative layouts??? Either 2 or 3 or 5??
@QVisible3 жыл бұрын
There's no easy way to know when your finished. What I do is judge from the number of low numbers that I've included in the calcs....if I've got most of the low numbers in there...I feel I'm finished.

Why would you multiply the loads by two when you already added the both directional loads? Ie - B C = 12 for both directions? Why use a load of 24? I know your problem didn't use those letters as non adjacent loads but it is just an example.
@QVisible6 жыл бұрын
it's to take into account if B and C are more than 2 away from one another. This means the amount of distance travelled would be more and would need to be weighted accordingly. In this example it didn't arise, but it could.

this was definitely insightful, but i wanted to clarify one thing whether this method is applicable for both the process layout as well as the product layout. Please, reply me!!!
@QVisible4 жыл бұрын
Good Question. I had to think about it. This is suited to process layout. I think if you were interested in a product layout you would use a product flow diagram instead. This would be more useful. What do you think?
@LouDFrog154 жыл бұрын
@@QVisible from another source i got that this method is applicable for initial setup. But for re engineering different types of facility, different method is used. For example product layout such as assembly line needs to have line Balancing
@QVisible4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This method is best for retail layout with random people who each want a custom experience and have free choice where to go and what order they want to consume. If you have a rigid product that can be replicated, then product flow diagram with line balancing is more suitable.

Why is the distance between A & F 2 and not 3?
@QVisible6 жыл бұрын
Is just to keep the example simple. Strictly the distance is more than 2 but less than 3 according to Pythagoras Theorem. You can go to this level of technical detail but just for the sake of this example I kept it simple.

For 15 & 30 departments how I will arrange this in a layout?

Again it would be this with a bigger grid. use a spreadsheet for calculating different layouts.

@Dachronic849 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your video. Very Educational. However, I was thinking you could have still gone further by swapping F and B, which by my calculations should have brought the sum of the communication between the non-adjacent departments to 44 instead of the 58 we stopped at. Good Education anyway.
@QVisible9 жыл бұрын
Elvis Brenya Appiah - Kusi Just doing the sums on your suggestion. Non-adjacent loads: AF:6x2=12 AD:0x2=0 BD:40x2=80 BF:8x2=16 Total Sum: 108 Big problem here is the introduction of the BD non-adjacent load of 40. Have I understood your suggestion properly?

how the distance between D and C is 2....it must be 3 right.....? D-E, E-F, F-C
@QVisible4 жыл бұрын
We take it as 2 for simplification. Your right, from Pythagoras theorem it is more than 2, but the sake of ease we approximate it to 2.

between e and a is not 15 it's 5. but that doesn't make much of a difference to the explanation1 thanks.

It's 5 in the intial matrix but 15 in the triangularized matrix which is the important one. see matrix at time 6.28.
