Respond and Acclaim Psalm
Third Sunday of Easter April 14th, 2024
Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9
Lord, let your face shine on us.
When I call, answer me, O my just God, who you relieve me when I am in distress; have pity on me, and hear my prayer!
Know that the Lord does wonders for his faithful one; the Lord will hear me when I call upon him
O Lord, let the light of your countenance shine upon us! You put gladness into my heart.
As soon as I lie down, I fall peacefully asleep, for you alone, O Lord, bring security to my dwelling.
Music: Owen Alstott copyright 1977, 1990, OCP

Beginning singers: Make sure you don’t pick up bad habits. Cleanly sing Let | Your | Face as opposed to “Letchur face.” It’s an easy trap to fall into if not conscious of it. Good learning tool for the psalms though if you don’t read music.

Agreed. I’m not a trained singer and if. you’re able to work with someone who is, listen to what they are telling you, not the way I do it. I’m just trying to be a good starting point, I in no way claim to be doing everything correctly.

@@ChrisBrunelle Thank you for the gracious reply. My intent is not to come correct you or say you don’t provide value. You and I basically want the same thing - for cantors to do well in the liturgy. This one little singing tip added to the psalm they learned from you will make them sound even better. God bless!

@@oceans6515no, I genuinely appreciate the way you phrased your original comment and your response. I’ve had a couple of other people over the years not bother to be tactful at all. I’m a good musician, play multiple instruments and read music well, but also admit that I never had any formal training. Everything I know, I learned from doing in church. So I’ve always known that there was a good chance that my singing/diction could use improvement and that I wasn’t always careful with what I was doing. I’m not sure about this particular video, but I’m guessing it’s at least 3-4 years old, and if I were to re-record it now I would probably take more care than I used to. sometimes when I was in the church for 2 hours to record multiple things in an evening, I got lazy with some of the diction. I think there’s value in what I do for many singers and musicians out there who don’t have any formal training, don’t read music and basically just learn by ear. But certainly if they are working with a choir director or trained singer who wants them to do something differently than I’m doing it, they should 100% embrace that guidance. :)

Always? You’re the first person who has commented on that. What I record for the psalms and gospel acclamations is the Respond and acclaim collection from Oregon Catholic Press, and those are the versions that appear in their breaking bread and today’s missal publications. If you’re at a parish that uses GIA materials it might be a different setting but most of them should be exactly the same. I’d need a little more info….
