I can appreciate a rapper who's lyrical, but at the end of the day, what really matters is if you can make great music and lyrics alone aren't enough to carry a song. Guys like A Tribe Called Quest or Snoop Dogg weren't super lyrical, but they made great music and had a sound that nobody had during their era.
@Stoney-Jacksman8 жыл бұрын
The difference is, back then there was so much good music. And many different styles. Like you said atcq, werent typically lyrical )although some of their shit is deep) , de la soul was funky and wise, big pun with the syllables, onyx hardcore,mobb deep straight street shit, nas lyrical , etc etc..What I wanna say is, you had music to dance to, music to siit back and listen to, music to get wild before you stick up or do a robbery, music to cry to, music to fuck to hahahah and al of that in hiphop. It was a great time back then and also what made it so special was that you couldnt get it everywhere, there was no youtube or 1000channels on tv etc...hunger to hear some music makes it more worthy. anyway...it is what it is.
@mistahmst8 жыл бұрын
Stones Jones That I agree with. There was a lot more variety.
@mr_knowitall8 жыл бұрын
There was definitely a lot more variety back then, and artists weren't afraid to make a statement. Also, many of the best artists were mainstream so you could still rely on the radio to break new classic material to the masses. You still had some fluff making it to the radio (MC Hammer) while some classic shit didn't (Gangstarr), but it was nowhere near as bad as it is today. And you bring up a good point with youtube. Back then you had to go to the record stare and by your tapes, CDs, etc. on a leap of faith, maybe based off of one or two poppin' singles. It was word of mouth that took over from there. So, when an established artist dropped a new album, the anticipation was MUCH greater than it is today. You couldn't hear the songs unless you went and bought the album or had it dubbed for you.
@mr_knowitall8 жыл бұрын
I agree. Battle rap, freestyles and all that are great, but classic music trumps it all. That's why some of the best rappers of all time are not the best lyricists.

Is Kendrick a top 5 lyricist? Nope. But he is a top 5 artist. He's well rounded rapper, a great songwriter and can put together a complete album. That in the long run is better than being just strictly a great lyricist. EDIT: Jesus christ people. I'm not saying he's top 5 all-time. I just meant currently.
@LFonzus9 жыл бұрын
He's not an MC :L Emcees are people like big pun, big L, biggie, R A the rugged man, locksmith etc you should be able to tell one from the other out easily as the rapper isn't as lyrical and doesn't touch most aspects of writing lyrics to make it a very diverse and complex piece. that's why you don't hear any choppers on the radio or big pun type of flows on the radio because this current generation is being dumbed down... if you want.. take some time to listen to this master piece: "Locksmith house of games 2 ft RA the rugged man" and you'll get what I mean
@BRobMint9 жыл бұрын
+Alphonsus LFA Kendrick isn't a "dumbed down" artist in the slightest. A dumbed down artist wouldn't release an album like "To Pimp A Butterfly" to the general public. Besides, Kendrick isn't trying to be a Pun or RA. He's not going to blow you away with a bunch of muultisyllable rhyme schemes or hard hitting punchlines. Lyrically he's like a 2pac or a Scarface. He's trying to get you to think and see things through his perspective through a more poetic approach. Just because he's not super lyrical doesn't mean he's trash.
@LFonzus9 жыл бұрын
Hahaha ^ :L B-Mint1994 And my previous post was about levels of lyricism but that song I offered you to listen to is lyricism AND real talking about the current rap industry at the moment... It also explores subjects like politics and a bit of history (in my eyes it's a master piece) etc Some of R.A's verse in house of games 2: - "Hypocritical Hollywood hoodlums that make features Political pandering preachers that desecrate Jesus Dumbing down the society, everything is over-simplified Cowards are put on pedestals and heroes are villainized" Some of Locksmith's verse in house of games 2: - "Laws of religion cause the hoards of division, doors of admission Causing the friction, inscription like the walls of Egyptians Paint a portrait like the Lord of the Christians, taint and altered his pigment False depictions got us all in a prison But it ain't no God in this system, can't evolve in conditions Where they write me off as being off and left my thoughts in perdition, bitching Often would grapple, tackle this road to no progression Claiming you atheist but still worship your possessions" Mainstream is overrated asf...

***** That's cool too but I like to view the underground rappers as the ones with the most passion imagination and originality if they take the time to master their lyrics and produce every song they make with their all and make it sound the best It can with a meaning cause like in that song they actually tried hard to present their views and topics (which are all topics that are constantly discussed) in the most poetic way. You can't be original if you have other rappers in the game that rap like you in most of their songs...

taumagalahi Brand Nubian is overrated as a group. I'm not saying they had no influence, but people only talk about them as grand legends because they're old, not because they contributed as much as other groups. And Jamar has very ignorant opinions and is only kept relevant through his interviews. It'd be different if he had music out right now people cared about, but he doesn't. The dude is a Vlad TV meme. And, I also think Sadat X played a way bigger part in hip hop and Brand Nubian than Jamar ever did.
@taumagalahi10 жыл бұрын
fonkymaster I won't disagree with you that lyrically and influentially Sadat and Puba left a bigger mark. I've always been more of a Puba head though. His rhyme schemes, flow and wordplay were way ahead of its time. While I don't agree with EVERY single thing Jamar says or the way he says it, he speaks the truth on many things and says a lot of the things most don't have the balls to say. Things that everyone know in their heart of hearts are true but constantly turn the blind side on.
@taumagalahi10 жыл бұрын
fonkymaster And for the record, RA and Jamar actually share a lot of the same views with regards to things like current white artists, etc. RA may say some of it like less of an Old Uncle Asshole than Jamar does but that doesn't make the core of what's being said any different.

Can you give an example? Ra has a few good songs. Uncommon valor was definitely one of them. He releases an album every 10 years and seems to always try and outperform his features with rapid firing delivery. If your cramming syllable after syllable then your not really saying much. Look at Mf Doom, he's sometimes completely misses the rhyme but 1 punchline is enough to stick in your mind for years. I absolutely agree that there are more technical lyricists on the underground that, bar for bar, have more complex flows than Kendrick. Where I think Kendrick is special, and the reason I think he gets all the mainstream respect, is because he's such a gifted songwriter. The concepts, hooks, bridges, flows, even down to word choice, he's got locked down more than a locksmith or an Elzhi. Honestly, there are a lot of rappers who can reasonably be explained as a top 5 lyricist. It's just a matter of the criteria used and personal preference. For example, some people prefer technical lyricism (wordplay, complex flows and syllables) while others prefer lyricists who provide social commentary & rap about relatable issues, etc. Of course it's best when an MC can do all of those things, though. It's all opinion. I'm not mad at anyone's top 5 lyricist list as long as it makes some sense.

Kendrick is versatile, smart, lyrical, decent flow, great storytelling abilities, and fills the role of a person that everybody likes or at the very least wants to like. He really is top 10 material, maybe even top 5.

He might not be the greatest lyricist, but he's the best rap artist right now. Rap is more than just lyrics, you need great storytelling, flow, emotion, delivery and an ear for good beats. The overall quality of the albums are a huge factor too. He's already released two of the greatest CONCEPT albums of all time in GKMC and TPAB. He's the best overall artist in music today. It's crazy how people state opinions like they're facts; such as, Kendrick is the best lyricist; Kendrick is not a top 5 lyricist; Kendrick will smash any other rapper; Kendrick is overrated. These are all just opinions, not facts. The fact about Kendrick is that he put out what many people consider to be a classic album that many people like. I'm sure not everybody likes GKMC, but I'm also very sure that more than 50% of people who have listened to it, do like it. Anything greater than 50% is a majority, so that's really the only time opinions turn into facts. They're still not absolute facts, like 2+2=4 or water is wet, but they are non-absolute facts because a majority of people agree with the opinions. I never understand why people want to compare rappers who specialize in different things. Freestyling, battling, and song making are all different types of lyrical art forms. I'm sure there are other rappers that are better freestylers or battlers than Kendrick, but when it comes to making quality songs with lyricism, substance and mass appeal, Kendrick is probably one of the best right now. J. Cole is in this category right now, and as annoying as Drake can be, he belongs in this category also. There are other people that belong on this list, but I just mentioned a few of the top commercial rappers.

untitled Some people won't let the best get their clout because they're afraid. Kendrick clearly is the best lyricist in rap by far. Rigor mortis thats all I have to say. Its not all about word play sometimes the best lyrics are the best delivered as in you can say the coolest line ever like a fucking bum with no enthusiasm. But you definitely say some retarded simple shit but have the perfect delivery. Kendrick has all of it and never slacks on any track he's ever done on god. That's why he's the best right now. PAC is so revered because of this. PAC had good lyrics some may argue but most of all how he delivered them was so real and confident in the subject matter that he even collided against the skills of Biggie who is a great word player. There are so many more factors to lyricism other than just word play or just speed or just delivery.

Someone being more "lyrical". I'd rather be a great artist than a "lyricist" battle rap stans fap to. Kendrick is the current king of hip hop for a number of reasons. His shit is a lot more poetic and impactful than a lot of these rappers talking about how much money they get and how many bitches they fuck in every song. kendrick makes classics. stuff that will endure long after people have forgotten about the latest King Los mixtape.

Nas is the greatest cause if you look back at the era when he was the King.. literally every rapper from the east, south, west, and mid west were REAL lyricists. He was the #1 P4P lyricist in an era where everyone was bringing it and was on their A Game. I believe other rappers shared the same sentiments.. from Ice Cube to Eminem and Jay.. they said Nas goes down as such due to his reign in an era where every one was a king in their own right. These days anyone can be the best considering you're rapping next to dudes like Yachty and fucking Future. The second closest thing is Lupe's run in the mixtape game all the way to the Cool.

lmao the reason Kendrick is mainstream is because of his lyricism, idk if section 80 dropped before he was signed, but ik overly dedicated did

Makes no sense at all. The man gave us some lyrical showcases in songs like the For Free Interlude, THat Part Black hippy remix, Rigamortis, even on Holy Key. There are so many songs that Kendrick has displayed his lyricism, he's a top 5 lyricist but he isn't the best, and Kendrick really isn't that commercialized compared to the rappers nowadays. I hardly ever hear the man on the radio. Kendrick isn't like a Lupe Fiasco or a nasty Nas or Eminem or MF Doom or Rakim. There are so many lyrical greats ahead of him, but who knows, he still has time ladies and gentlemen

Idk why people try to argue that some mainstream "artists" are "real hip hop", cuz im sure if they actually hit an underground venue where real Emcees battle, and dig deep and listen to real emcees who have kept true to the art and not following mainstream style and maonstream beats they will realize their favorite "rapper" doesnt have the right or deserve the respect to call themselves "hip hop" when all they doing is dumbing down the youth of our future. At least there are real emcees and real hip hop artists spitting logic and realness into society

this came out before TPAB. I'm interested in what Rugged Man's opinion about Kendrick being a societal impact now is, and what he thought of the project

There is no chance King Los could win against Kendrick. No chance. His songs aren't even good. Only his freestyles. Also, Kendrick has never made a bad project, or a bad song really.

There isn't a single Kendrick song that I like.His voice is beyond trash.

R.A's flow is unbelievably messy at times, he's over rated, but when he's in the groove, he can slay.

I think a lot of these lyricist diehards, like RA, are putting too much focus on just that one part of rap

These days ratings like "classic" and "top 5" get thrown around all the time anyway. These new listeners don't want to rate anything as just good or great anymore. As soon as something drops that they like, it automatically gets stamped as on par with the best shit ever created. Jordan is one of the best players of all time, if not THE best. All it took was for Lebron to dunk one time and everyone began calling him the next Jordan.
@jaytee6958 жыл бұрын
Well apparently you only watch certain highlights. Why aren't Zack lavine and Terrance Ross being called "the next Jordan"? They got all their attention by just DUNKING, RIGHT?! so why isn't anyone calling them the next MJ? go to sleep bih
@zlistcelebrityYT8 жыл бұрын
Jay Tee When Lebron first entered the scene, people were calling him the next Jordan. That was no secret. I didn't agree. I still don't. So you're asking me to explain why people didn't say the same of other players?
@jaytee6958 жыл бұрын
zlistcelebrity so why has nobody else who entered the league the past 12 yrs been dubbed "next Jordan" "next magic"??
@zlistcelebrityYT8 жыл бұрын
+Jay Tee because now they're making other nonsensical comparisons like Wade and Curry. At the end of the day the NBA has stopped marketing *teams* and started marketing *players* instead. That's changing the lens through which a lot of (alleged) sports fans are looking at the game. Personally I gave up on anything besides just betting.
