It's in Malaysia, just about the most racially divided country in South East Asia. The three main groups of peoples (Malays, Chinese, and Indians) don't really mingle with one another, and the Malaysian state consider the Malays and other so-called "natives of the land" (Bumiputera) to have a special position over the other groups, and gives to them a lot of privileges, which IMO only makes the division worse. Like, those 3 main groups still have to speak English to one another, in their own country, 66 years after the Brits left. Maybe this is just my bias as a neighbouring Indonesian, but I think this whole thing is ridiculous.

Unfortunately, a lot of countries have a native only rental properties. Japan still has rules for rentals, restaurants, and even jobs that are Japanese only.
@pinkdarkman Жыл бұрын
This is true, especially in Japan, but that sign was trying to say, "We don't see you as your race/ country of origin. We just see you as a good tenant." It didn't mean that those people weren't allowed to be tenants.
@Lightice1 Жыл бұрын
Discrimination by ethnicity or nation of origin is, in fact, a crime in Japan when it comes to renting property, serving people at public venues or hiring for jobs. Not that there aren't racists who break the law, but all such "rules" are still illegal, not a normal, accepted custom.

I was looking to move to Spain a few years ago, and to be fair, they have a really high unemployment rate, so I get why the Mercadona job ad said "We don't hire foreigners". Which is why I chose not to go there since I would just feel like a burden. Don't know about Japan though, I guess they have a rap for being massive racists.

There have been quite a few concerning times when I've seen the choice "natural" in a skin tone selection in products like makeup, where dark tones were "ebony, hazelnut, coffee etc" and pale tones were "alabaster, pearl, fair." My lighter, slightly tanned tone is frequently named ""natural,"" because any other shade apparently isn't? 💀 I dont buy from places that do that, feels too weird

The 3 flag shirt was probably a reference to how Brazil has a very big chunk of it's population (especially in the South-East state) being direct descendants from Germans, Italians and Japanese people (we have the highest number of japanese people living somewhere outside of Japan even)
@Jocke-04 Жыл бұрын
Wonder how that happened 👀
@rafaelcastor2089 Жыл бұрын
@@Jocke-04 Well, the japanese started coming as contract agricultural workers even before getting involved in WW2. Yhe italians started coming here during the 19th century because Brazil had started promoting immigration to increase its population, so rural colonies were created to accommodate the european immigrants and since Italy was dealing with a huge economic crisis a lot of them ended up coming here. The germans were coming here a bit earlier, due to some failed revolutions during the mid 1800s that caused millions to emigrate and many ended up settling in the brazillian South and Sutheast states. . So no, it didn't have much to do with WW2 if that's what you're implying.

This reminds me of one time in the late 2000s, I was at an airport and in front of me was a man of Arabic/Middle Eastern descent wearing a turban. However, he talked and acted like a stereotypical California surfer dude and he was there with his friend who looked and acted like a California surfer dude. Right when we get up to the security checkpoint, the Arabic man turned to his friend and said, "Dude, I bet I'm gonna get pulled to the side for one of those "random" additional screenings." he said with air quotes. They had a laugh about it and when they got up there, sure enough, the Arabic man was pulled to the side for a "random" additional screening and his friend was dying laughing off to the side and the Arabic man was trying so hard not to laugh during the screening. He ended up being on our flight, so my father started talking to him and he says he is almost always selected for those "random" screenings, but he has fun with it. Not so much accidental racism, seems pretty purposeful, but this reminded me of that time.

I remember I once bought a bootleg game from Hungary and along with the game, the seller also packaged two candies called Negro. Of course, this raised some eyebrows at first, but then I decided to do some research. What I found was 1) it's pronounced NAY-gro and 2) the name comes from their inventor, Pietro Negro. As for the candies, they're actually pretty good! The original flavor ones are like lozenges and they have a cool burst to them. My favorite ones are probably the honey ones.
