Last story reminds me of a guy I knew in college. He was partially deaf from birth but had about 20% hearing without his hearing aids and about 75% hearing with them. He would turn off his hearing aids or "forget" them and then berate his girlfriend for being ableist when she didn't yell to him or talk looking at him so he could read her lips in public settings. She would say "Are your hearing aids on? Did you remember to put them in?" and he'd get even angrier. Using your disability as a way to hurt others, or justify toxic behavior is simply unacceptable.

Yikes. I'm sorry, im going to sound ableist and I probably am, but a lot of people will NOT sign up to date a person with disabilities (I will, but I'm talking about people as a whole) so when you find a rare individual willing to see past your disability and you burn them, BRUH, THATS DOUBLE THE REASON NOT TO DATE YOU

Okay, here's the thing. Most people I know who use hearing aids think they are uncomfortable and prefer to not use them. However! If in a public setting or in a group hang-out, they put them in. They also make it clear by saying "Is it okay if I skip the hearing aids today?" And then we all know about it. The girl I am closest to is the sister of my friend, and she doesn't like us yelling. She prefer to read our lips. I even tried learing some sign language, but I am not very good at it. She had a few laughs... point is, I can understand not wanting to use hearing aids, but it should be made clear for everyone. Also, maybe compromise, every other date or smth?

That could be the case, but I find it quite laughable how people's utter lack of respect for boundaries, failure to accept or understand the word no and complete non presence of accountability for their actions is all somehow chalked up to a designer disorder that may or may not exist. If someone is willfully doing, at bare minimum the things I've already listed, to me that's not a disorder. That's just willingly choosing to be an asshole. I knew someone like this. She swore up and down for years that she was bipolar but she never was on any medication. I later found out from one of her sisters as well as her neighbor that she used this phony claim as an umbrella to protect herself from people holding her accountable for how she trampled all over their boundaries. In other words this lady was a total Karen, to the point, that her kids grew up, cut contact with her and refused to let her see any of her grandchildren. Am I demeaning anyone who might have a genuine disorder that causes them to behave irrationally? No. Am I acknowledging that these disorders exist. Yes. It takes a very brave person to admit they need help and continually work towards being a better person. Unlike that lady I alluded to, she never accepted responsibility for how her poor choices and decision-making affected her life as well as the lives of those around her. Her go-to response when she wasn't making excuses was to blame everyone and everything for the dumpster fire that her life had become. To me, people who are unable to see the role they played in their own misfortune, are beyond help.
@iononcantomascrivo
@iononcantomascrivo Жыл бұрын
@@ParrapetteFor real. If she's going to therapy and she seems to only be getting worse, I think she needs to be evaluated for whatever condition might be causing her behavior. It would be interesting to find out that her gross lack of respect for boundaries, failure to accept the consequences to her actions and pre-recorded response of blaming everyone for her troubles, might simply just be that she's a toxic individual and can't see that she is playing the main role in why her life is slowly unraveling. You went to therapy because you knew you needed help. I applaud you. Something tells me the lady in this story is never going to admit that she is the problem. That's why many of these people end up ruining all of their interpersonal relationships and end up living very isolated, miserable lives. Why? Because they're selfish assholes who always have to be right and get the last word.

The story about the blind guy is infuriating! It’s also one I feel like I have some authority on. I am totally blind, I’ve been that way all my life. I have never once been upset if someone orders a different type of food than me, and I would never purposefully touch other peoples plates to see what they’re eating. For one, there’s other ways to tell like smelling the food, or you know… Asking them. For another, why would I care of people of different tastes? It sounds like this dude had to eat different foods from the rest of his family as a kid or some thing because his parents didn’t feel like normal. Food was safe. Story 3 UPDATE: (5 days later) I officially submitted the paperwork to John to get payment for the debt. However I decided that would forgive 1/4th of the debt. So instead of claiming $37K, I am claiming $27,750.00. I told my siblings that I would forgive a fourth - and if keeping the house for Sara is important to them then they each need to come up with the same. So far they are saying they will not contribute. John and I spoke with the lawyer and we were wrong about how any cash from the sale of the house would be dispersed. First - any liquid assets have to be used to cover debts. Then if assets need to be liquidated, then whoever was supposed to get that asset gets whatever proceeds are left after paying debts. So no matter what my siblings do - Sara will get the rest of the money if the house is sold. The lawyer also pointed out the same thing many people here did - that giving Sara the money could affect her benefits. Instead he suggested she turn down the inheritance in favor of placing the money into a special needs trust for her son. Sara will be talking to the lawyer on her options and exactly what that means. Sara is attempting to get a loan using the house as collateral. Not all the paperwork is in order yet (exactly how much will be left in the estate after all debts are paid) - and we are probably looking at needing to get a professional appraisal of the home first. One person at the bank talked to her and said that with her credit score and income she doubts she would be approved - but that she would process the application once Sara got all the data.

This whole situation is weird. The whole point of mom taking out that much money was to make the house more Handicap accessible for sarah and nephew. I don't understand how OP thought an elderly mother was going to pay off such a big loan? And now they are going to try to force the sale of a house that was specifically upgraded with handicap accessibility? Now that I think about it. OP could force the sale if the house, get 37k from it. Then (as he put it) the estate would give him 1/4 whatever is left in the estate. If we pretend the house is 300,000 then subtract 37,000 that's 263,000 left. Each sibling gets 65k~ out of the deal which is way, way more than the fat zero. Idk if OP did that intentionally but yikes. This is why you don't loan out money though everyone. If an insured bank with resources to reclaim the money won't do it, you shouldn't either. I find giving money as gifts when asked is far better, as it's easier to say no and I'm not depending or expecting that money to come back.

First Story, NTA: OP's sister needed to learn this lesson before she ends up killing someone with her distracted driving. The fact she got upset because OP didn't tell her she was about to hit something is a red flag and makes me think she isn't ready to be driving yet. What if OP wasn't there? What if it was a way worst accident than her hitting a lantern? This behavior while on the road needs to be stopped fast before she causes a serious accident and end up killing someone or herself. Christy is mad because she had to pay for damages SHE caused while being a distracted driver? Wow; and she claims she would've learned her lesson another time...when? When she causes a serious accident will she learn her lesson then? Second Story, NTA: I wonder why Rslash kept saying Alice instead of Alexis? That said, I get being worried about ur kid bur OP's wife is taking that worry way too far. I agree, if she is that nervous with her child being in these daycares then she should quit her job and take care of her daughter full time. If she is refusing to do that then she has to stop basically harassing these daycare employees and let them do their job. Better yet, she needs to stop being a helicopter parent before their daughter grows up resenting her mother Comment: Exactly Third Story, YTA: OP sounds like a loan shark. Like come on, OP's mom used that money to help with Jeremy and Sara before she passed away. If OP is very wealthy, has a high paying job, and can live comfortably then he is being greedy right now. Like I get getting the money back but going for the most insane route to get the money back is insane, he has options Fourth Story, NTA: I will finish this story but I have to say OP's fiancé is a red flag. He thinks OP sees him as less because she is eating a different food than him, makes her eat the same thing as him, and touches her food to make sure OP is eating the same this as him? That is all kinds of disgusting, especially him using his disability as a weapon to do what he wants. Bro what??? What is this story??? So OP is "abusing" this guy for refusing to eat the food he is touching with his bare hands? OP needs to leave this man ASAP because this guy is the abusive and controlling one. How is OP pathetic and childish when HE is the one throwing tantrums over OP not eating the same food as him and touching the food to confirm it's the exact same food he has. @brittanyno5941 I think your view on it is a bit too simplified; my argument is that drunk/drugged driving is worse because they also involve a poor choice (just like distracted driving), but unlike distracted driving, you can't "snap out of it" and be sober on a whim. There's also different levels of distractions; changing a song on a music app is a lot less distracting than a text message. On top of that, you can literally choose to put the phone down at any time and be fine to drive. I worry more about the drivers who think they can distracted drive without getting into an accident, then the ones you have a momentary distraction from, for example, a phone call. To be clear, I absolutely agree that distracted driving is a scourge on the roads these days, and we need to do more to combat it. I'm just saying that I would rather have a distracted driver over an impaired driver because an impaired driver can't "wake up" and pay attention. While I'm saying all this, I may as well bring up my concerns of drowsy driving as well. Once I saw a transport all over the road because they were too tired to drive, and didn't even get charged because he was within his allotted hours. 🙃
@brittanyno5941
@brittanyno5941 Жыл бұрын
@@TheEDFLegacy I think my main reason for disliking distracted drivers (the ones who can't get off their phones) is *because* they aren't impaired, they can think logically and more easily make a choice to not be on their phone and yet still make the poor choice. They can snap out of it, and certainly kill less people a year than drunk drivers (about 3,000 vs. over 17,000) but just... something about having all your wits about you and still putting yourself and others at risk? Idk, I just can't get over that. Edit: Don't get me wrong I hate drunk drivers very nearly as much, it's like a hair width of a difference in my hatred, but I'll have more judgment for the one making a bad choice and harming someone while completely sober vs someone making a bad choice and harming someone while drunk

If possible, I'd be selling the house if appraised at $180K or higher and give Sarah her half minus the most current balance of the debt. If it is only OP and her sister, then that would leave about $53K for Sara to find a suitable apartment for her son and herself. It'd have to be appropriate as far as accessibility and accommodations go, but that seems like a good amount of money to spend on necessities and save the rest. Or OP could just let her sister sign a new contract for the loan and not risk them being homeless. If Sara is worried about the government restrictions on income related benefits, she and OP could have an agreement that allows a legal "loophole" to make sure Sara is taken care of, but not have huge amounts of money in her possession... Idk. The loan shouldn't be excused at all, but that is definitely a difficult situation.

I'd say the cruel person, albeit unintentionally, in the situation was the mom. She left a house to someone who could not afford it while she had an estate in debt. It brought the siblings to the point they're in now. The sister can't repay the debt. From OP's comments, it's even doubtful that she can manage utilities, maintenance and taxes. So, his siblings are basically asking him to write off the money, but based on the follow up, won't put any skin in the game. If the sister defaults on a bank loan, the consequences would be far worse. The mother could have ordered the estate to be settled, the allocate proceeds disproportionally. Forcing the sale of the house allows for all siblings to have clean slate. How many of us can afford to write off $37K?

If I was OP, I would ban Christy from using a car, EVER. Or at least make leave her phone at home before driving anywhere. That helicopter mother NEEDED therapy like yesterday. Also my fiancé is visually impaired, and he is the sweetest, and has NEVER EVER used his disability as leverage for controlling me. You need to leave honey, it’s like weaponising incompetence but with a disability as the incompetence rather than lack of skills. The trust lacking in this relationship speaks volumes!!

Second story, obviously OP is NTA but I'm really wondering if the wife is actually going to therapy. He didn't say anything about taking her so I assume it's going herself, which is making it uncertain. Especially with how *bad* she's being about everything. But, along with what Rslash said, a lot of comments are bringing up that if she raises their child? Yeah that kid's life is ruined. I think right now, the best thing OP can do is sit down his wife and ask if she's actually been going to see her therapist, been taking any medications she might've been prescribed and in general following her therapist's orders. If not, then as much as it sucks? OP should be getting an exit strategy ready and to get custody of their child because if his wife continues this behavior, then the kids needs to be kept away.

Dabney, you really out-did yourself today. Every single story was top notch, especially the last one. That one had me in disbelief. Could it be a troll story? I don't know, people are legitimately that entitled, and being blind could be one of the reasons that guy tries to control others, but controlling is controlling, whether you are blind or not.

Story 1: She is hella lucky it was that minor. When I was 19, I'd been driving for about a year and a half. I looked down for a split second to switch pandora stations and rear ended a immobile car. They had been stopped cuz there was a lot of traffic (including foot traffic) and were turning into a parking lot. The car I hit had 4 adults and 2 newborn babies. MY car was totalled whereas theirs looked scratched. I was in shock and then broke down sobbing the entire time. I felt awful. The cop even told me I was lucky it was a car cuz it could have been a pedestrian at the cross walk a couple hundred feet in front of me. NEVER touch your phone while driving. If something comes up, I always pull into a parking lot or over to the side of the road. ALWAYS. A message can wait.

Story 1) It's not up to the passengers to make sure the driver is being safe and paying attention. If you're behind the wheel, you're responsible for the car and those riding with you. I also can bet you she hasn't learned her lesson one bit and is going to do it again as soon as she's behind the wheel. Distracted drivers take lives, she deserves to lose her license until she can learn to pay attention to the road and not her phone. NTA. Story 2) Your wife is not getting very much out of those therapy sessions other than learning how to weaponize her anxiety. Anxiety is a reason, not an excuse and she needs to learn that now rather than later. How does this woman work a full time job if her anxiety is *this* bad? I think something doesn't seem right here. NTA. Story 3) Why does this fall on Sara and John's shoulders? It's not THEIR debt, it's your late mothers. You sister is not responsible for paying you back, but she's offering to try and your answer is to rip the *only* thing she got from her mother away from her because you're a selfish twat? That's not even YOUR house to sell, it's Sara and John's. YTA, also, how is it you loaned your mother $37k, she's been paying it back month by month...but you still are somehow owed $37k? I think you're intentionally misleading us, fuck off. Story 4) I'm not even going to finish this one, cut and dry your partner is a controlling asshole who has some weird self esteem issues. You need to either work it out or get out of that situation. NTA.

Last story: I'm totally blind and would never do this to a person. I can't think of a reason why anyone would do this but somehow this guy is insecure or something and wants to control his future wife's, let's be honest the marriage ain't happening, stuff that she eats. I can’t get past the irony that the original loan was, in part, to adapt the house for her nephew and that now those same adaptations have put his ability to live there at risk. OP, whilst 37K is a lot of money, your mother wanted her house specifically adapted to be disabled friendly for her grandson, your nephew, yet you’re completely happy to make him homeless and throw him out on the street?!

I have a similar but kinda different story for #1. I watched a woman go speeding down a road and hit a seagull while on her phone, didn’t look up, slow down or anything, just careened down that road at way over the speed limit. I was like 12 and so traumatised lol but like this woman didn’t give two shits. I can’t imagine what would have happened if it was a toddler in the middle of that road instead of a seagull. Some guy took the seagull to get euthed cause it was very clearly hurt and still alive and it scared the shit outta me for months and I stayed very far away from roads. My brothers almost got hit on that same road a little further down at a roundabout cause of someone with their face buried in a phone too. It’s just not a good idea at all

For story 1 I've heard it before and it infuriated me still. My mother saw me touch and look at my phone ONCE when I was driving and she yelled at me until her voice was sore. Growing up all she ever taught me was vehicle and driving safety and was pissed I seemed to have just thrown all that away. I can't say I don't look at my phone when I drive cuz it's common place now, everyone has hands free stuff but I'll never let it distract me. Somewhere, OPs parents went wrong in teacher OPs sister that distracted driving is unacceptable

The blind guy is crazy. That would be like a deaf guy forcing his girlfriend to mute movies and only watch the subtitles with him, except worse, because dude is expecting his girlfriend to only eat the kinds of food HE likes, for no reason that relates to his disability whatsoever. Story 3. Agreed. He should have his sister sign a new loan for the current balance with his brother cosigning. Edit: After reading some comments and updates on the story, I think he may deserve a lighter .5 butts. He mentions needing the money in 18-24 months. He also mentions when he filed the claim against the estate, he forgave 1/4 telling his siblings if they want Sara to keep the house to put up their 1/4 each, but so far all have refused. I still think he should've had all his siblings cosign on a loan from him for Sara so it at least gives them 18-24 months to repay the money. But I think its likely they wouldve refused anyway. But not doing the right thing by giving someone an option you can easily take even if you're pretty sure they'll refuse is still a tiny bit of a butthole move, so 0.5

I'm 27 and just got my license last year and I definitely don't see myself as a great driver. If I was that sister, I'd be very understanding for that lesson. I actually get annoyed when my phone goes off on my Bluetooth. I hang up every call and ignore every message til I park. She really needs to learn that a text can wait, it's not worth it to answer a text if you're going to ruin yours and other people's lives.
