Whatever was going on with him, he seems to have realized his behavior was disrespectful to his mother AND incredibly wasteful. That's certainly better than the spoiled daughter who probably had never worked a day in her life and is now assuming daddy will leave her ANOTHER fortune to squander as she sees fit. LOL I hope dad does spend that money on himself. Daughter doesn't deserve it.

Yeah, I saw it coming, too. I used to work for a company that cleaned up asbestos contamination. I worked in the office and never went near any of the sites, but I did see their portable decontamination trailer. I do have an old house myself, thankfully no asbestos in it if I can trust the information of my ancestors who build it. But I am still very careful if I do something here. For example I once dug a hole in my garden and hit something, turns out they did throw old building materials out, dug a hole and let it be there (under the grass). Turns out, there were two asbestos plates burried and I dug them up (noticed very early, so I kept them wet until they could be professionally disposed of).

True but most of those who develop lung conditions from it aren't the result of relatively short exposure. They may be incredibly unlucky and have it result in health issues but I don't think they have the same risk as people who've spent years working around asbestos in factories or construction.

@@fdm2155 Was just coming in to say this. Infomercials about asbestos lawsuits are most people's exposure to the topic and they don't tend to emphasize the "this is mostly caused by long term exposure to aerosolized particulars" part. So, people have this idea that even a single exposure is deadly.
@Ryanthusar

@@fdm2155 - Not always, there are cases where one person who got cancer only had one day of exposure and never went back to the job due to a family death. So even the smallest exposure can cause health issues later on if the person is unlucky.

Dammit was anyone else hoping that the gift the bf “forgot” to put under the tree was an engagement ring? I mean, a diamond necklace is super nice, but that would’ve been the perfect moment to propose. 😂 Also RSlash, could you include more stories about healthy, functional relationships like that of the Lego couple more often? Like maybe one of those “How did you know you found the one?” or “What do you do for your spouse to show you love them?” threads? I know the stories with happy endings will be more difficult to record cuz you probably won’t be able to stop crying lol (no shame, you’re in good company), but it is really nice to get a break from all the failed marriages, infidelity discoveries, and realizations of emotional abuse once in a while.

How is spending 300,000 pounds on traveling considered "justified"? Even has the gall to call OP names and emotionally abusive. She is just a spoiled brat and is bad with money, and she's angry that OP wouldn't give her more through his will. She is definitely going to grow up and be a Karen imo. If you don't want to support her I would at least set up a trust for any kids she might have if you so choose. It's not fair to punish the kids for the sins of the parents. That second story broke my heart! Asbestos is such a hard thing to deal with and I could just feel the guilt coming from OP in their words. Story 2. We have an older home and the home inspector is pretty sure our flooring has asbestos. We DIYed in out last house because it was much newer, but we not going to do floor stuff ourselves in this place. We bought the place from the original owner, the husband passed away but the wife is well into her 90’s and just moved into a care facility, cause, you know, she’s in her 90’s.

I don't know. You don't need to be Warren Buffet to realize it's a bad idea to take your inheritance of spend it on high end travel in two years. I agree most people will likely make some questionable purchases if they suddenly have $375K in their account especially if they are young. But blowing through all of it despite a parent advising against it is clearly a purposeful choice. And from this story the daughter would clearly do something similar if the dad leaves her money.

The first story is sad. My mother has amassed a significant amount of wealth and both me and my brother are in the will. My brother, for a multitude of reasons, is terrible with money and absolutely could not be trusted with a large inheritance. Yet for all that, he is still my brother and he is still her son, so she didn't cut him out of her will. Instead, she amended her will so that his inheritance will be placed in a trust and he'll be given an allowance. I think that's a much better way to go about it. Doing that in the first place as others have suggested would have saved a lot of heartbreak.

Regarding the 2nd story, I just want to add that while asbestos was banned in 1977, builders were using up what they had left so it might be possible that if your home was made in the early 80’s might be at risk and you need to test it before you do something like this. Tbh I would test any home made before the 90’s.

The LEGO story hit hard for me. Right now, about 5 feet away from me, is the LEGO Titanic set I spent all of last year building. My mother ordered it online in 2021 while my dad was in the hospital with COVID, because LEGO was part of his physical and mental therapy after a bad car crash a few years prior. He was also autistic and formed a special interest in the Titanic from elementary school. It was the first time that she got to surprise him with a birthday present in 19 years. The set arrived on December 10th... The day after my father passed away. LEGO sets became a huge part of our family bonding over the past few years and it really hurt to put that set together. I kept thinking about how happy my father would have been to be doing it and how I'd much rather be putting together the Pride set he'd gotten me for Christmas. Not because I don't like the Titanic, but because I felt like he should have done it. I'm so glad OP got him that set.

It wasn’t until my mom was in her 20’s I think that she learned it was asbestos. She and her older brother are in their 60’s now, and their two younger siblings are almost there. Thankfully, no one showed any signs of bad health, but what they did was insanely dangerous

1st story: While you aren't wrong that the kids can spend the money how they want... you forgot that their mother wanted them to spend said money on education and mortgages etc. Those two went directly against the wishes of their mother, which is why the father is reacting so strongly, and understandably so. When they got the money, it's their choice how to use it, yes, but it's also their responsibility to deal with the consequences of not using it according to the wishes of their mother, in this case, alienating their father. While you get to that at the end, it seems like you forgot why the father was so against it in the first place in the judgement

The whole school system I grew up with was built with asbestos. It was really bad, even as the school was falling apart with leaky roofs and peeling, crumbling walls, kids still went to school there every day. Fairly recently the buildings were demolished and they needed special teams to demo them properly because they were in the center of town. Fun.

About the 2nd story. In my welding classes, they taught us the dangers of asbestos because it’s always a possibility that we get a job welding in an old home, and a fibre of asbestos is 1/20 the size of a human hair. They are so small that when people breath the fibres in, they can get lodged in the lungs, and the fibres cause irreparable damage to the lungs. They cause the tissue to scar, and lungs cannot function properly when they’re scarred. It’ll take over 10-15 years on average for the scar tissue to spread to the whole lung and kill you, but there’s nothing the doctors can do about it even if you show up to the hospital an hour only after inhaling the fibres. As great as it is as a fire repellent, it’s not worth the risk.

Asbestos is terrible. My mother's second husband had helped with a house renovation over forty years ago, disposing of asbestos sheets. No protection at the time, it wasn't until years later that it became known how harmful asbestos is. He got a very bad flu in 2018 and afterwards his lungs were very bad. Doctors found out that asbestosis had developed in his lungs, but it was encapsulated and broke open due to the onset of pneumonia from the flu, destroying his lungs and by now he only has forty percent lung volume left. But OP didn't do it on purpose and it must be a horrible feeling to know that you accidentally exposed your family to poison. 😨 Poor guy!

For the asbestos story, for the health concerns, likely this won't turn into anything. It was a high but very brief exposure. Most asbestos issues are due to long term exposure so his family will probably be fine. However, they should keep an eye on any symptoms and get regular tests every few years to be safe. It's an expensive mistake to be sure.
