For the last story, definitely NTA. OP knew full well that calling his girlfriend that around her parents was potentially tricky territory, and it slipped out on accident. He's not throwing it around in front of them just to spite them, or even weighing in on the situation himself-- his girlfriend was the only one (according to the post) to object to her parents reaction, and rightfully so, because this matter is and would've been something just between them as a couple. Her parents, even now knowing what they weren't supposed to, do not have the right to interfere with their relationship or what their daughter allows in hers. Also, the nickname isn't even a historically loaded term or widely accepted slur. It's a silly nickname that really only has significance to OP and his girlfriend. Definitely NTA for being considerate of his girlfriend's autonomy/feelings and accidentally letting that slip.

His grandma never liked being called grandma, as she said it made her feel old, and preferred the name of Nana Estha. So Bill, would always call her grandma Easy, when she called him William. She would harshly correct Bill every time, he would nonchalantly respond, if you don’t like call me Bill. His parents would just smile, and say to him you need to show some respect, then proceed to applaud his decision out of hearing from everyone. It took several years (not really close, they lived at the other end of the country, only visited a couple of times a year) but whenever she called him Bill, he would call her Nana Estha. She still occasionally has those moments due to ill health, but then she’s in her late 90s, and Bill is in his early 40s. And understands/forgives the occasional slips.

For me auto-respect for a familial elder ends at age 21. After that respect is earned. As my older sister put it "if I'm acting the brat, I don't deserve others respect." Word of the wise: don’t compare “mayo momma,” a term used lightheartedly between partners (or any term similar to “mayo momma” that plays on race), to a slur. I’m biracial (black&white) and I laughed my oreo butt off. I poke fun at my own races with my friends all the time (and have can/aren’t wrong for doing so because I’m making fun of MY races and experiences as those races, it’s hard to explain). While, yes, *racism can be towards anyone, this isn’t racist.* It’s all about intent. The black friend and the n word example falls flat because the majority of the black community will NOT take that lightly. Non black people have gotten jumped in my area because they said the n word on social media. With all slurs, don’t say them if you aren’t a part of the group the slur was intended to hurt. If you’re not black, *don’t say the n word.* And n word passes don’t exist lmao. OP should apologize for the slip up and explain how he didn’t mean any malice in that nickname. Now I'm gonna have to disagree with one part of this comment. The part where you can't use a word created to harm one race if you aren't that race. In my humble opinion either nobody should be able to say it or everyone can say it (in a non derogatory meaning). Nobody can reclaim word because words don't belong to groups. You can change a word's meaning and connotation but you can't keep a word to yourself. Now I'm not campaigning for us changing a word's meaning and just slinging it around casually. I think we should just stop using these words altogether. Words have this funny quality where if you just fucking stop using them that tend to disappear from public consciousness. If we stop putting these words in the dictionary, stop saying them, stop putting them into songs, and just ignore them in general they're gonna fucking die. Word are kinda like memories. If you stop using them and recalling them, they tend to just go away.

This comment 98%. OP even acknowledges he knew it would be odd outside of context if said in public. OP never said he expected the parents to be okay with it. The name does not concern the parents at all. The parents are the ones persisting and interfering in the kid's relationship. OP never once implied saying it outside of the home was going to be the norm and the girlfriend finds the pet name endearing. The fact that they called it a double standard and went as far as coming up with a name they thought would insult him shows that they are trying to make a non-issue political. If OP made a spectacle and was clearly pushing the nickname to be said in public, then the parents can protest. Far too often do people make inconsequential accidents a big deal. You don’t need to consider the in-laws your Mayo in-laws either, because the title does not apply to them. Quick edit for people arguing what is racism: Racism is many things. It’s definition is “prejudice towards others who vary by skin color/race”. At least, that’s how I view it. There’s also extreme racism (extreme events involving violence, destruction, and even death), systematic racism (closure of jobs and business for minorities [depends on area]), and casual racism (yelling a slur at someone). Any race can practice any of these. Ex. Let’s say there’s a city whose main population is black, while a small portion is white. The black people are now fully capable of executing racism towards the white people. You can change the races, the results while usually be similar. Racism is racism, no matter who it’s being levied at.

I have to disagree with r/slash about the "mayo momma" story. For a pretty valid reason (for the record, I'm lilywhite). It is absolutely stunning how FAST the tables get turned in a mixed relationship. I experienced that myself. It was all fine and dandy - until the VERY FIRST opportunity to turn on my boyfriend came they ALL turned on him and the friendly stuff was absolutely blown out of proportions. Pet names are none of the parents business. Every other pet name would be ignored, no matter what. I had a boyfriend called me a (rough translation from german) "goasheep" (Schazi) - because he couldn't decide if he wants to call me a sheep or a goat ("Schaf" (sheep) and Ziege (goat) are common insults here. A sheep being dumb and a goat being..bitchy). "Schatzi" is the equivalent of "preciously", a childlike abbreviation of "precious". My family heard that and found it hilarious. Another pet name by my black boyfriend back then absolutely let them turn to him and it wasn't even bad. It is a deep ingrained racism - cumulated with "OUR women", the possessive pronoun is important here - which leads to this outburst and the messaging. Even with "mayo mamma" there is absolutely NO reason to make a fuss like this. Asides from the fact that, yes, minorities in the US can be discriminatory to other races but by no means "racist" - the element of power is missing here.
@veronicadrysdale80663 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but you have that the wrong way round discrimination is the one that requires power as it is essence an action whereas racism is a belief based on hideous small minded idiot sheepel that someone can be inferior because of race

@AmazingAutist3 жыл бұрын
As a woman of color, I agree with everything you said except for the part about minorities not allowed to be racist. Racism exist anybody if you discriminate against someone's race. What's your confusion is institutionalized racism versus typical race is on. But institutionalized racism would not exist without the overarching umbrella of racism. Saying that minorities cannot be racist is a very very dangerous ideology that really butchers that you meant narrative. Institutionalized racism can only exist because racism in itself exists. You can be a racist without having institutionalized racism being in your favor
@JustAnotherBuckyLover3 жыл бұрын
@@veronicadrysdale8066 While I understand that is your use of the words, and that's fine if everyone understands what you mean, it does differ from the definition in the current sociological discourse - racism is systemically ingrained discrimination into the culture of the group in power in that social system - so in the USA or the UK, or Australia, for example, that would be white people having privilege over minority groups. I think perhaps there's some confusion between the power of the individual in a given situation versus the power of the social group within that society? So while a white guy who is working for a black guy may not have the power in that job, white people overall still have more social power than the black people do in that society, as a whole. I believe Jayla was talking about.

Strong disagree on the last verdict. There's nothing offensive or explicit about him jokingly calling his GF "Mayo Mama". The equivalent, "Chocolate Daddy" is equally acceptable. After all, people have used words like chocolate, coco, and mocha as complementary/lovey dovey descriptors for decades. It's just dumb fun, really.
@hlaw28303 жыл бұрын
Are "shit-brown" and "vanilla-white" equivalent terms? "Mayo" as a term for white people is virtually always used in a derogatory way, "chocolate" as a term for black people is not. This sort of nuance isn't restricted to people either, if a car is a peach it's good, if a car is a lemon it's bad, even though they're both fruit. But you probably already knew that, you're just making excuses, like a bitch.

The mayo-mama story is wayyyy off the mark, rSlash. First of all, OP said it *ON ACCIDENT.* You read "it slipped out" and it seems like you chose to ignore it. He didn't mean to call his gf that in front of anyone. For example: I call my sister Ham and she calls me Cheese, and we try not to use the nicknames in public because it's a little silly and in some cases embarrassing, but they do slip out every once in a while. *Because if you get used to saying something so often in private it's bound to come out in public conversation sooner or later.* Second, I don't think the girlfriend's parents had a right in trying to interfere. If they had a problem with it, they should've talked to their daughter in private. They shouldn't have blown up like that. Especially since their own daughter wasn't offended by it. Third, this isn't on par with the n word. I'm sorry, but comparing a horrible racial slur with a funny nickname is, for a lack of a better word, strange. If I heard a black person call a white person "Mayo-mama/daddy" I wouldn't turn and glare at them like I would if a white person said the n word. But to each his own I guess.
