r/AmITheA**hole OP's wife is about to give birth to a newborn baby girl. OP's wife wants to name the girl "Karen," because it's a family name. OP puts his foot down and refuses to name is daughter Karen. This leads to a blow-up fight between him and his wife, which leaves OP wondering if he's being too harsh about the name. Is growing up as a "Karen" really that bad? If you like this video, be sure to subscribe for more daily Reddit content!

I go to school with a Karen. She is heavily bullied to the point where she went from sweet to a Karen. Naming a child Karen doesn't affect their actions until after their name affects others, which in turn makes Karens a Karen.

The story with the stepdaughter was great, OP did exactly what he needed to do. My parents are divorced, and my father abandoned me in middle school. My stepdad and I had the exact same relationship growing up. It took me a long time to realize that he was doing the best he could for me, but he would never let me get away with shit like sneaking in boys or drinking. OP should tell his wife that she should be the one disciplining her daughter tbh

Fr stepparents really need to be the fun parent as opposed to the disciplinary. Being strict especially if the kid already hates you is going to further damage the relationship and I’m sorry to say but she’s not his kid and honestly has little to no right to discipline her without her mother’s support. (Ignore this logic for adopted children) If anyone other than my mother tried to punish me especially without my mom’s permission I’d be raising hell although I was a fairly well behaved child

@@desireeloveros1055 I disagree. If you let step parents or any one parent be "the fun parent" it causes rifts. You must be a united front. Children will walk all over you if you don't. Teens are supposed to rebel against their parents. They are testing authority and pushing boundaries. If you have a weak link, the teen has a way to manipulate their way into trouble. Also, you have to have a no judgement policy. Your door needs to be open to them at any time they want to talk. Make sure they can trust you, open honesty. This is how you parent children.

@@Beena2020 That’s more or less what I’m saying but bio parents definitely need to be the ones doling out punishment while steps back them up. The abusive stepfamily is a stereotype for a reason. As a Christian, I DO NOT condone the behavior of that Pharisee like woman in the first story. Shortest verse in the Bible is Jesus wept. Why? Because He wept with those who lost a loved one (sound familiar?), and knew they didn't need a speech or lecture. They needed someone to grieve with.
@AngelEmfrbl
@AngelEmfrbl 3 жыл бұрын
As an athiwst, however, your God basically doesn't exist and therefore he didn't punish the woman. What the other woman said is fear mongering and it worked. This is how Christianity works it gives a false sense of safety and gets people to cone in for comfort on the pretious that it will bring you closer to God. It's part of the brainwashing process. If there is a god... It's not the bible due to how many, many inconsistent things there are and how dated it is. If the bible was true, it wouldn't have out dated things in it like treating slaves well, as we don't own slaves now. And there is so much it does not cover like evolutio, vaccines, gm crops, space travel, etc. It is what it is. So e people like it as nd I'm not the type to get rid of all religious stuff. I think it has a place despite this and its part of culture and way of life. The issue is how she acted is why people hate the religious. God was not behind her families deaths. Its pure unlucky chance. But that poor woman who lost her family us not in the right frame of mind and she'd believe anything that puts her mind at ease. Even if it wasn't 'God'. This is why religion shouldn't be used like this, it ends up preying on the weak and vulnerable and comes off as a bit dishonest. Because what happened to that woman... Happens to even the most faithful.

The last story had an update. Copypasta: First off I want to thank everyone who sent me supportive messages and advice, I never expected my post to get so much attention. Since many of you requested an update, here we go. Turns out some of you were right, my wife was in on it. I confronted her a couple days after I posted and directly asked her if she knew that her parents planned this. She broke down and confessed everything to me. MIL had been pestering her about baptizing our son nonstop and my wife finally caved. My wife has been working from home during covid while my job requires me to go into the office. My wife and MIL started doing zoom meetings with MIL's priest to start the baptism process. They lied to the priest and told him that I was ok with baptizing our son but didn't want to be involved. The priest allowed it and they started doing online baptism classes while I was at work. My wife admitted that she planned it around our anniversary getaway and that MIL had somehow convinced the priest that her and FIL would be the only ones in attendance. My wife told me that I wasn't supposed to find out, but MIL couldn't keep her mouth shut for even one day about it. Their intention was to keep this from me permanently. I did contact the church to let them know the truth. I talked with the priest and he was surprisingly helpful. He said he would take the proper steps to make sure MIL is no longer welcome in their church and to reach out to the local parish to see what further steps need to be taken. I have yet to hear back from them on that. My wife and MIL are mad that I got her kicked out of her church, but I don't care what they think or feel anymore. These people who I love and trust had betrayed me and I felt a range emotions I didn't know existed. My wife begged for forgiveness, but the fact that she didn't come clean on her own makes me feel she would have kept this from me unless I confronted her. She's willing to do therapy, counseling, whatever it takes. I don't know if I want to put in that work, I feel like there's no coming back from this. I contacted a divorce lawyer and started discussing what a divorce would look like and if there is any way I can add provisions to a divorce agreement that would keep my inlaws from seeing my son unsupervised. He's been very helpful but I have not given him the go-ahead to actually file for divorce yet. I feel I am still too angry about the entire thing to think rationally and want to give myself time to fully grasp what a divorce will mean for me and my family. My wife and I aren't talking much. I pretty much go to work, come home to play with my son, go to bed, and repeat. I don't know what the future is going to bring, but I do know that without the support and help from people here, I don't think I would have the clarity I do now.

Maybe my being an agnostic (and a childless asexual perpetual bachelor) makes me biased, but this seems to me like making mountains out of molehills. A baptism isn't like being married or something; it's a ritual with virtually zero consequences. The child is so young they won't even remember it. So I honestly cannoot what the big deal is. Or, at least, until the update when it turns out the wife was in on it - now there's a trust issue I can understand much better. But just based on the original story, I'm sorry but it hardly seems like something to get mad about let alone ruin a marriage over. But then, I haven't gone to church since the late 1980s and even when I did go to church it wasn't a big deal for me. Also never been married and never had kids, so again maybe I'm just not able to see the problem.

Re: the Karen name, here's my experience: my parents were initially going to name me Veronica (they chose Pamela instead). The reason why they decided against naming me Veronica is because my initials would've been V.D., and I was born in 1985, when V.D. stood for "venereal disease". 1985's VD is today's STD, for context. Eventually, though, Baywatch became a thing, so instead of getting teased with "VD", I got called "Pamela Anderson" in a mocking tone. You can't predict what ways your kids will be teased, but guaranteed that some other butthole kids will find a way. Absolutely do NOT name your kid anything that could result in bullying. Kids are already cruel enough. But keep in mind that they WILL be teased regardless of what you choose.

The wife wasn’t upset because she was in on it. You can’t just get random kids baptized in the Catholic Church on a day notice. She should have been honest with her husband and he needs to decide if it’s a big enough problem to blow up his family over. Considering he really didn’t care about the religion of his kid and it seems to have mattered a lot to her family and more to her. It’s not like the grandma took the kid to a drug house, drove drunk with the kid, or put his life in danger. And if he gets divorced there will be no way to control grandma’s impact because it won’t be 100% his time.

8:33 Honestly, all of us who grew up without a father figure in our lives for different reasons or have a toxic/abusive/bad relationship with them is probably as sad/mad as I am. She has no idea how insanely lucky she is for technically a "stranger" trying to give her all of the support that a child should get from their dad. Most step-fathers set distance boundaries, SOME REAL FATHERS set distance boundaries and he is trying so hard even with her spoiled attitude. I would cry to see my father at any event that is important for me. At my graduation ceremony, while parents were taking proud pictures of their kids my father said that I wasted his time and that he is disappointed in me and he ignored me even more until I and mom left and that's not even a quarter as bad as what we have gone through previously. Imagine going out shopping with your dad? Imagine not having to fix something yourself cus you got a dad to do it? Imagine not having daddy issues because you grew up with the love and support from mom and dad? Imagine knowing how a guy suppose to treat you right because your father set an example for you? And let's not forget about guys who grew up without a father. Them having to learn by themselves how to pick your first car, how to fix this and that, missing on a piece of guy advice on how to charm a girl, to hear your dad say "I am proud of you son", to go out play sports with your dad, to watch a sports game with your dad both yelling on top of the lungs. All of us now have trust issues because a figure that we expected to help us grow cut us deeply. And how many more times, us growing up, will regret not having a loving father even in our adult lives.

I am from a similar situation as you, but I can see where she comes from. I think a lot of us deal with it a bit differently. Even though my father's a dick, and I want to hate him and be done with him so much, I'm also desperate for him to love me, and spend tine with me. I can see where you come from, but you gotta remember, from her POV it's probably different. She most likely knows he's a douche, but she's scared that if she accepts it and embraces OP as her father figure, then her bio dad will just leave, or worse, she might be scared that as soon as she embraces OP as a dad, he'll leave her too. It's irrational, but scary. She might be acting like that because deep down, she thinks if she chases him off, she won't get hurt again. It's her walls. I might be wrong, but I think there are no A$$holes in the story except Bio Father who messed up his kid. I also agree with you, that she is lucky, and has no idea how lucky she is, but try to put yourself in her shoes. I really mean no disrespect, I just... Idk. I kinda feel bad for her.

If I remember correctly there was an update on the last one where the guy finds out that his wife knew her parents were gonna baptize the son. And they all hid it from OP because they knew he wouldn’t like it and were planning on hiding it permanently from him. He talked to the priest at the church and the priest told him he as going to make sure MIL was banned from the church. He also filed for divorce.

the stepdad/stepdaughter one kind of got me, because as a teenage girl I know how we can act. but I think that the apology was a good move. not necessarily because either of them was in the wrong, but because the stepdaughter didn't need someone to yell at her. she needed a parental figure to express care and love and they needed to communicate, so good job to that guy.

*Warning, this is a LONG emotional comment* The _”thanks dad”_ from OPs step daughter made me smile wide & even shed a tear. My step dad raised me, my bio dad is a piece of shit, me & my step dad had a wonderful relationship & in my eyes he 100% was my real dad, however that little comment did so much for me because it warmed my heart that she finally is realizing who her real dad truly is, just because you aren’t blood doesn’t mean you aren’t family & just because you are blood doesn’t mean you are family, family are those closest to you, the ones that love you & are by your side through all the nonsense, I’m glad OPs daughter is starting to realize her step dad is indeed her real dad, I know she probably had the mentality of he was replacing her bio dad & that’s probably why she acted the way she did but in all honesty he should replace her bio dad because he sounds like a lowlife douchebag. That _”thanks dad”_ probably also got to me the way it did because I lost my step dad (who I considered my only real dad) back in 2014, 2wks before Christmas, he was my world & I miss him so much. I hope OP & his step daughters relationship continue to blossom & they both realize how much of a beautiful relationship they can have together because having a bio dad who loves you is one thing but having someone who’s not your bio dad take the time to be your father, love you & care for you even tho they technically don’t have to is an incredible thing. I leave you with a quote me & my dad always used to go by... _”anyone can be a father, it takes someone special to be a dad”_ we interpreted that as, anyone can get someone pregnant & become a bio father but it takes someone special to take on the role of a dad & everything that comes with it for a child that is technically not even theirs/their responsibility. Love you dad 💔❤️ James C. Runner 08/02/1953-12/07/2014

"Becca" in the first story is an absolute monster. I'm a Christian, and the bible tells us that when our friends are grieving, we're to "enter their grief with them." In other words, to be totally sympathetic and/or empathetic. What "Becca" did was contrary to what her alleged beliefs were, and just plain cruel and WRONG. I'm so glad OP's friend is doing much better, and that she got so much reassurance, and that some of it came from actual Christians. It's people like "Becca" who make the rest of us look bad. Also, I happen to know a woman named Karen. She's one of my coworkers, and isn't at like the "Karens" we make fun of. She can get upset sometimes over certain things, yes, but that can be applied to ALL of us. Overall, she's a pleasant and nice person, and is easy to work with. She has been teased a few times by the other coworkers about her name ("Way to be a Karen, Karen!"), but she's always just laughs about it. It doesn't happen often, and there's always some general teasing going on, so my coworker seems to be handling her name alright. Awww, I'm glad too that the stepfather and stepdaughter are making progress. I hope that progress continues, and that the stepdaughter ends up realizing she shouldn't bother trying to get her deadbeat bio-dad to love her. Sounds like she's better off without him. The mother-in-law in the last story is a piece of work, and I'm with OP. Go ahead and die on that hill, dude, your son's safety and well-being are worth it. I hope the wife comes to her senses and realizes what her mother did was wrong on SO many levels. EDIT: I just saw an update on the story in the comments - THE WIFE HELPED PLAN IT?! Yes, OP, go ahead and leave this woman. To do something like this behind your back? No. Yuck. Take your son and never look back. And I'm glad the grandparents are being ostracized by their church, they deserve it.

"Your husband and son died because you didn't allow God into your life!" Me, having read the book of Job: "Oh really..." I've looked at quite a few religions, and I can tell you one thing for sure: If there is actually some truth to this whole "god" thing, then whatever deities might exist don't punish non-believers for not believing. Hindus, Christians, Taoists, Asatru, none of them have some unexplainable statistically higher rate of positive or negative incidence rate of death. Which is what we'd expect if your faith influenced such things.

I always felt that if God is real and a father to all creation, then why would He punish people for things like who the love or how they identify themselves. The way I see it, only God can creat and Satan can only destroy. So someone who is homosexual or gender nonconforming, is that way because that's how GOD wants them to be and people who use God as an excuse to be hateful bigots are the real liaisons of Satan. Of course, people who commit awful crimes must be punished, but I feel like that is a different story. Either way, the people who think they do right by God when they really aren't will be in for a HUGE surprise when they find their souls arguing over whether or not they belong in heaven.

Oof that one story hit me hard. My dad has been gone for years, since I was four and his family used to talk to me but when I turned 12 they all just stopped talking to me. I hated him and his family for years and one day when I moved to my mom's old town where my father used to reside i went into a Walmart with my family and on our way out I made eye contact with my father he was there in front of me just a few feet away. He looked at me and just turned and walked away out the store. I was devasted I know I hated him but I guess I was still holding onto some kind of hope that maybe he wanted to my father. I broke down right there in the store and my mom and brothers started yelling at him and yelling him how much of a piece of shit he was. I got home and told my mom exactly that: "why doesn't my dad want me?" I cried in my mom's arms for the rest of the night. He texted me after I graduated and I didn't really say anything to him except why he didn't say anything to me at the Walmart. His excuse? "Your mom was yelling at me so I didn't want to get involved" safe to say I don't talk to him now
