Fingers crossed he's now the EX-fiance, because I doubt he's gonna start respecting her more after marriage. Third story: Man I didn't even need to listen for more than a few seconds to know that the fiancée is the jerk. OP doesn't need to explain why the chair brings him comfort, it's obvious why. Losing a sibling to cancer at the young age of 27 when he had so much of his life ahead of him just sounds devastating, and I'd be too furious to even consider marrying anyone who took that comfort away from me. Hopefully OP took that one commenter's advice and sold the engagement ring to get that chair back, rather than marrying someone who would steal important things from him for luxuries she doesn't need. Eating disorders suck, but you don't need a gym membership to survive if you're that strapped for cash. I have zero issues getting down in the dirt with someone if it is to protect someone I love. In fact, I rather enjoy it sometimes. It's not right for me to dismiss all my other ancestors to claim being Mexican. Also, not to mention, I am very much American. As an Irish person, it really irks and baffles me when Americans (not all, but I have yet to meet another nationality that does this) claim they're "Irish". Like you haven't grown up in our schools learning Gaeilge, understand our slang, have our mentality etc. What I much prefer is that if you want to honour the heritage then refer to yourself as a member of the Irish Diaspora. Our first femal president Mary Robinson was quite passionate about connecting with the diaspora and seeing how Irish culture is passed between generations abroad (e.g things like lighting a candle for someone to wish them luck or opening a window when someone dies to let the spirit out). That way you can be your own unique nationality (American) but acknowledge whatever ancestry is important to you

I never knew its like this in England but I can't say I'm surprised given the history. I'm American, I say I'm American, I simply happen to have Irish, Finnish, and English ancestors. Am I curious about my heritage? Sure. Does that make me Irish, Finnish, and English? No.

I'm mostly American, but it also feels weird to erase part of my childhood by dismissing the little Finnish bits from my father and grandmother. It's kind of a double edged sword so I will usually say "my grandma is Finnish" instead of claiming I am.

@BertieJRussell2 жыл бұрын
@@CatacombD I appreciate the nuance - depending on where you are in the world and the historical context of how different cultural groups have been treated (like how Rslash's grandfather had to change his last name in order to get a job), heritage can be an important touchstone for folks
@DvanderPluijm2 жыл бұрын
But those are two completely different things. There's no nuance there. One is literally being proud of something you had no say in and which, to me, is kind of weird because if you're not actually living in said country/culture can you really be called 'something-American'? The other is thinking fondly of your (dearly departed) family and reminiscing about what you loved doing with them or loved about them. Truth be told, I don't get the whole 'I'm a so-and-so American' thing. Never had and never will. You're American. You're Irish. You're African. Not both. Otherwise everyone could go around calling themselves 'Irish-Dutch' or 'African-German' or what-not and to my knowledge no one does that. Yes, you can be proud of your heritage and be drawn to the culture that your family originally came from, but that doesn't suddenly give you that culture's nationality or something. I think rslash's example demonstrates the illogical nature of this way of thinking quite astutely.

@@DvanderPluijm I don't think you understand why black people in the US are called African-American. Yes, you can be both because for one- there are people born and raised in Africa who moved to America and now have a citizenship here, making them African American. For the rest of us, up until around the 80s, black people were just called black. For many reasons, it made people uncomfortable in more professional settings, like filling out paperwork. I can't deep dive into it because it would take too long, but basically it was formed as a more respectful way of saying someone was black in a non-formal setting. Also, some of us are more sensitive then others because of our backgrounds, so hearing someone not black call you black could make you feel uncomfortable. We also call white people Caucasians because it's a bit more respectful. It all boils down to respect. That may not be how the rest of the world does it, but that's how we do it here.

@@DvanderPluijm now, of course we know black people don't just come from Africa, but also the Caribbean and other places. I was actually the reason for that 😬 I was four and she tripped over the backs of my Garfield flip flops as we were leaving Wendy’s and I thought it started raining but it was me getting doused in frosty as she went down. She went to the doctor like a day later and found out she’d broken her hip. Biggest difference? She never really scolded me, she hated making me cry. She was very much the doting grandmother and she herself cried the one time she had to pop my hand as a toddler because I kept throwing things. Shit, I’m crying in the middle of my kitchen now but anyways. I love hearing your personal stories

7:07 the title was bad enough alone, but the fact that it's from your dead brother makes this 100 times worse

Love these type of stories! My grandmother came to Canada from Italy on a boat called the Andrea Doria ( the boat technically brought her to New York but her final destination was Canada). My grandfather, who was already in Canada, had sent her a letter asking her to come to Canada earlier since he was already there. So my grandmother went to exchange her ticket for an earlier trip. My grandmother’s uncle, who was a priest, was upset because he had arranged for her to travel on the later trip with a few nuns so that she wouldn’t be alone on the boat. My grandmother apologized to him saying she wanted to take the earlier trip, her uncle remained angry though. The day arrives, my grandmother travels on the boat and she gets to her destination safely. But that was the last trip the Andrea Doria ever completed. The later trip, that my grandmother was supposed to take, ended up sinking and the nuns she was supposed to travel with all died. Her uncle was no longer mad at her after that.

The first story, funny how the ex-fiancé said OP was out of her mind for putting him in that situation. Theres a thing for what he did, its called Grand Theft Auto

Says OP is out of her mind for calling the cops. Yeah, says the guy who literally commited Grand Theft Auto. The one that's out of their mind is you, bub.

That ex-fiancé could have just offered to drive OP to her work, go with and let his buddies know that he was going to pick OP up after she's done, and then he wouldn't have had any of that trouble in the first place. It's what I'd have offered to do in that douce's shoes.

Your stories are the reason I listen to you over other channels like this. You actually put a human element to this which is both touching and very entertaining. Keep up the great content!
