長野県松本市の南東部に位置する日本百名山の一山です。なだらかなピークがいくつかあるだけのほぼ平坦な高原で、最高峰はホテルや電波塔の立つ王ヶ頭です。高原全体がアルプスや八ヶ岳などの好展望台として知られますが、展望を楽しむのなら40座を超える日本百名山が望めるといわれる王ヶ頭や、高原西端にある王ヶ鼻がおすすめです。詩人・尾崎喜八の『美ヶ原溶岩台地』の詩が刻まれた美ヶ原のシンボル・美しの塔が立つメインコースはほぼ牧場内を歩く道で、レンゲツツジの群生地（例年６月下旬～７月上旬）は見どころのひとつです。東側登山口には美ヶ原高原美術館や道の駅、西側登山口には自然保護センターなどが立ち、山歩きのエリアというよりは、「高原ハイクが楽しめる観光地」の雰囲気が強いです。　
It is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan, located in the southeast of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. It is a flat plateau with only a few gentle peaks, and the highest peak is Oga-to, where a hotel and radio tower stand. The entire plateau is known as a good observation point for the Alps and Yatsugatake, but if you want to enjoy the view, Oga-to, which is said to have a view of over 40 of Japan's 100 famous mountains, and Oga-hana, located at the western end of the plateau, are recommended. The main course, where the symbol of Utsukushigahara, the Utsukushi Tower, stands, engraved with the poem "Utsukushigahara Lava Plateau" by poet Kihachi Ozaki, is mostly a path walking through the farm, and the Renge Azalea colony (usually from late June to early July) is one of the highlights. At the eastern trailhead, there is the Utsukushigahara Highland Museum and a roadside station, and at the western trailhead, there is a nature conservation center, so it has more of an atmosphere of a "tourist spot where you can enjoy plateau hiking" than a mountain walking area.
