Hmm... remembering the common kanji for names is very easy. For example 本 is always read as もと and 田 is always た, .... except for 本田 is read as ほんだ. Wait...What!?

@@DMS-David That's the point. No one learns these name readings unless they meet or read about someone with that name, your whole point was that you can "learn" or memorize them all but it's not like that with names, they're not like common words. Unless they're very common names, such as the ones in the video, you'll need to learn them one by one. For instance, I could have a kid and call her へいわ and write it as 和. Are you going to memorize へいわ as a new reading of 和? No, you're just going to learn that she's called へいわ and that her name is written as 和. That's why Japanese people often ask how your name is written if it has kanji on it.
LITERALLY NOBODY TALKS ABOUT THIS. YOU SIR ARE A PIONEER. PART 2?

i've been using a flashcard deck on ankidroid in order to learn names, and it actually helps a lot. i'd say i can get the correct reading 75% of the time, although is people use obscure readings it can be difficult. no need to complain though, if it's a celebrity you can look them up and it automatically shows the kana, and if it's someone you meet just ask, or even search online. there's lots of websites dedicated to all possible readings of certain names.

I was told that often when a word is made with 1 kanji we use the kun yomi but when a word is made of 2 kanjis we use the on yomi (of course there are plenty of exceptions). But I noticed that a lot of japanese family names are read with kun yomi (it was the case with most of your examples except Honda - sorry I don't have a japanese keyboard right now). Is it because these family names are old and existed even before the kanjis (and on yomi) were introduced in Japan ? Thank you again for your videos, you're really a good teacher :)

もしかして、遂に、あっきー先生の姓名を知っていましたか。 三田明生から、あっきー先生。 Also, I think a lot of traditional Japanese surnames are describing places. Like 田中, within the rice paddies, and 川口, mouth of the river, and 山本, base of the mountain. I always thought that was really cool.
@alanandrade20834 жыл бұрын
NayvieNoir In English, traditional names were based off of occupations: Smith, Farmer, Baker, Tailor, etc. At some point, people were named by their occupation. For some reason, most of those last names became rare with the exception of Smith and Farmer. Maybe Japanese had a simple way of branding last names onto people based on what role they played in rice farming or in civilization. It would make sense that 田中 is the most popular since rice farming probably required an entire community out in the field in order to become productive.

@@alanandrade2083 Family names are a relatively new thing in Japan- at least as far as commoners are concerned. It's from around 1900. The government told people to make up surnames for themselves.

redfish337 I’m pretty sure they were around before that no? At least until from the heiwa period. If they are that new in Japan, I wonder why Japanese has the custom of saying the person’s last name instead of the first.

@@alanandrade2083 People had surnames. If you were culturally a "somebody". "Edo Period (1603-1868) Farmers and townspeople are not allowed to have surnames. Women of samurai families keep their family name even after marriage. 1870 The general public are allowed to start using surnames. 1875 Mandatory use of surnames begins (for tax collection and military registration purposes). 1876 Married couples have different surnames. It is stipulated that the wife uses her original family name. 1896 The (former) Civil Code states that married couples must use the same surname. 1947 The revised Civil Code (current law) stipulates that a couple should both use either the husband’s or the wife’s surname."

redfish337 Oh right. Makes sense. Thanks for letting me know. The general public was allowed to have surnames from 1870, and that is why the last name has a cultural significance in Japan. I’m pretty sure that was around the Heiwa period.
