So, I don't actually know what that Shogun BBQ sauce tastes like, but with my extremely limited understanding of Japanese it seemed that they felt that while the Shogun sauce was delicious, it didn't taste like BBQ sauce to them. But you know, BBQ sauce in America doesn't just fit one profile; there are many different styles. For instance, there are thin vinegar-based sauces (great for pulled pork), golden-hued mustard-based sauces, and even white sauces. So if the Shogun sauce tastes good with BBQ, I think that should be enough to qualify it as a BBQ sauce.
